I remember hearing something a few years ago about some kind of self propelling bullets (kind of like a cross between a rocket and a bullet). Do (or did) these ever exist. Basically a small amount of high energy propellant at the rear of the bullet was kinetically ignited by the action of the hammer. They were supposed to have a longer range etc. Any truth in this?

Sounds like Gyro-jet ammunition from Man from U.N.K.L.E. (that and the RPG, Top Secret)

dunno if it's real, but I suspect it's fiction.

You're talking about the gyrojet round developed in the 70's. there were both a 12mm semiauto and a 13mm carbine version made...

I've heard about some experiments with hypergolic propellant that is hosed into the chamber behind the bullet before firing, but I'm no expert.

Hypergolics? Hoh geez, I don't think I'd want to be carrying one of those weapons PERIOD, let alone into a combat zone! What happens if you crack both tanks or get a bullet through them? I don't think you'd even have time to say "OH SH*T" before you evaporated in a massive ball of flame.

Even if you got a leak in one tank, most hypergolic propellants are so hazardous that you'd probably end up dead just by virtue of the chemical's properties. :o
