View Full Version : How realism is perceived by gamers...

I noticed that outside the INF communauty it's pretty hard to find anyone who believe in realism in gaming...

Many see realism in a very bad way : either too slow or too quick, too restrictive, hard to implement or simply game breaker ... And they also judge realism by showing the flaws of every games made before who attempted to be realistic or claimed to be... But they don't see the advantages some realism (well implemented) can do in a game : More tactical considerations, more variety of skills needed, more thinking involved, more ways to achieve a goal...

For exemple adding the reload need in HL was for both realism and to add some tactical considerations. Adding damage algorythme to our cars in NFS4 was also to add some gameplay since you need to drive more carefully and more intelligently to remain competitive. Adding command points in HW:C was a good way to inforce more thinking and planning in the HW universe... It may make a game harder but also make them more interesting because it takes longer to master them and give more gamplay...

Realism don't always mean real life, and may not need to, but a bit of it (when it add more than it take away) is always a good thing in a game... And i believe that more is better than less...

I also believe that a game should do a bit more than just be a funny relief : it should teach something useful that could be used in RL... But that is an other topic...

End of my rant.

I know enough to know that I don't know enough

Amen brother R-Force!

Preach on!

I think most people don't like realism because of 2 reasons.
1. Realism increases the difficulty. Take NFS for example, you could bounce off guardrails and into other cars and still win, but with collision damage, you had to drive better to win.

2. Many see games as an escape, so the less realism the better. In my mind the best element of realism games it the fact that you can push the edge of reality but live through it (I like INF but never ever want to feel what it's like to get hit by a .50 BMG)

amen to both, like i would wan't to get my head blown off in a war,and i like having to think not just "point, click, press button, repeat"and realism games are sort of an escape in a way,as long as they have some fiction too,but INF is almost a whole new genre of game, and i love it! :D

if only we could fly limp bizket style

Yeah, gamers tend to want simplistic games in wich they can get real good in no time by relying heavily on their natural skills (Pushing buttons and moving a mouse real fast)... They dislike complications and having to care about things their "skills" can't take care on their own :(... And they also see games as escapes for their RL problems (in a way i agree but i always seek challenge in my "escapes").

In their mind : harder games = less fun.

I my mind (and many INF players) : Harder (and more realistic) = more challenging.

Zundfolge: I especially like "the fact that you can push the edge of reality but live through it". I like games that show us the kind of reality we would never see in our life time, put us in command or give us opportunities we would never hope to see... Too bad so many gamers just want instant gratification...

Freddrick,AJ :Yeah, the infamous "point, click, press button, repeat", if only everyone would see how pointless it is... Well maybe the arcade style gaming will eventually go the same place dinosaures did, but it's not for tomorrow...

I know enough to know that I don't know enough.

See I don't mind that most people don't like realism and Infiltration. Sure I want there to be plenty of people to share the game with, and I surely want the Inf team to get the recognition for their work. But I like the fact that not everyone will be here. People en masse are annoying and stupid, so I like the exclusivity of this community.

Years ago, back in jr. high and highschool, I was into RPGs. I enjoyed them, and I had friends that enjoyed them but we'd have all dropped them if the head cheerleader and the captain of the football team started playing too. We liked being on the fringe, and I see much of the realism gaming community as being on the fringe.

Also I enjoy the company of people who are from a military and/or law enforcement background, somehow they all end up here :)
