A friend of mine wants to buy a computer. It would be nice if you could give some hints.
It should be around 1.400 Dollars (3000 DM). Better less.

i'd say spend the most on a high quality motherboard. get atleast 128 megs of ram. then buy a decent sized hardrive. definatly no smaller than 8 gigs. more if you can afford it. after that get a processer, fallowed by the video card and souncard. and whatever else.

just a list of order by what i think is most important to spend your money on. but it's really all personal preference.

Lord is right. A good MB is key to the machine doing what you want when you want.

If you can afford 256mb ram, then do it. (Ram is pretty cheap right now...) And at the minimum, get a Gforce GTS (32 or 64mb)

And perhaps tell me which processor i should choose? AMD or Intel?

Look at a good AlienWare or Hypersonic built compy... go with an Athlon (T-Bird)/GeForce Combo, you can find those for decent prices usually. 256 meg ram wouldn't be a bad idea, but if you can only get 128, don't fret about it that much. Ram is candy tho ;)

- Geforce MX card is probably what you want
- Sound Blaster Live Budget
- Either a Athlon or P!!! around the 700 up mark
- AT LEAST 128 megs of Ram
- The smallest drive I think you can ge is about 12gig?? Make sure it's fast though (ATA 66 at least)

These are what I'd cosider the most basic bits you can get.

DO NOT get onboard graphix or audio...LAN's not too bad. DO Make it yourself (Or a friend). DO NOT walk into the shop and ask the attendants opinion.

My machine is way better than the above and it cost me less than 1400 is Oz dollars to build.

PS-If you can, get a board with a raid controller integrated...just in case :D

i gots an asus p3b-f motherboard, an ati rage furry maxx, soundblaster live x-gamer, 128 M o ram, 4 gig drive, and 300 p2 mhz processor. the only things i got new where my case, power supply and motherboard, video card and soundcard, everything else i stripped out of other pc's or made trades to get from other pc's. my total expense was about $500. the only thing i have problems with is my hardrive but i think it's cause this is the 4th pc it's been in.

i kinda departed from my above priority list here but i was focusing on stuff i needed. i already had the processor. i've kept it cause i'm waiting for a p3 850 to get down to around $100.
