Ok, I was just flipping through the March issue of PC Gamer and my mouth dropped when I saw the X-box ad. When I first heard about X-box (which was a while ago) I became interested in it. It seemed more than just a ordinary console. Now I cant stop thinking about it. It sounds like its going to be a little bit of PC and console mixed together. Could the X-box be the next BIG thing?

The answer to this question is obvious.
PC WILL ALWAYS BE THE WINNER, NO MATTER WHAT

By the time X-Box is released, the PC will have better parts by then

Well of course pcs will always be better than consoles, but that was not the question and that is hardly a fair fight.

I really think xbox will be better in every way. I used to be a HUGE Psx whore and back in '95 when it came out, every person that made fun of me for buying a console made by Sony(my father even told me I should have bought a Saturn instead *shudder* cuz of the Sega name)now whistles a different tune, yet I really feel xbox will be better, it's just a gut feeling same as with the Psx. We'll see though. :)

As much as we hate Microsoft, they are pretty good when it comes to dominating technology. I expect it to be the console that nails the coffin in the Sony empire. And you can quote me on that.

In terms of what's better, well, that's a loaded question. How do you define better? If you define better as "cutting edge" the PC will always be on top because it's a flexible, dynamic platform that can always be upgraded. If you define better as "stable and dependable" then the XBox will be because it's a "closed" system that developers know will run the same game the same way every time and they can optimize and tweak for that.

I guess that PC will be better because you can upgrade it with the latest technology. But I just have a gut feeling that the X-box will knock the PC off its feet.

nah, it can't. See the card in the xbox is basically a NV20, by the time xbox comes out something better than the NV20 will be out for PCs meaning that PCs will be more capable. We all know that great games come out for PC so I don't think we need to debate on that. Lastly, if you were using a console, could u be doing this? I am not even talking about posting on a message board, I am refering to posting on a message board for a mod for UT. :)

Indiana. Kill me please.
X box is laughable. An NT kernel in a console? HAHAHAHAHA!!! Nobody wants to get the BSOD while playing on their console.

I'm lost...
Consoles are more reliable... but X-Box is just a small computer, not really a console... it's a dis

Gates has made the microsoft corporation the leading computer technology distributor in the world but it can't dominate the console industry with a computer disguised as a console... If you don't understand what i'm talking about then e-mail me for the info itsakrok@juno.com

You will never believe some of the stuff but it's all true... :p

my 10 cents

PC

-You can D/L new games, and those games wont get boring because of mods, updates, etc.
-One month in the PC industry is old, meaning that in a period of like 5 years, look how far we've come.
-Internet is WAY better on a pc
-Xbox is gunna cost almost as much a computer[correct if wrong]so why not just get all the extra little features for the same amount of money
-High res
-You can play gmes WHILE watching TV.
-you can have multiple programs running, not just one game.
-CAN be easy to ranspot around
-Easy to modify[spelling]

Console
-looks cool
-about half the price of a PC for most of the consoles
-different games
-easy to trans port, etc.
-SOME internet capabilities.

Now compare the numbers.

Refer to Pacmans sig to the content of this post, thank you.

Ok, the PC is going to be more powerful, but it’s missing one thing that consoles have. The consoles are extremely easy to use, just put the game CD or cartridge in and press the power button. It’s not that easy with PC's. First you have to install the game, then configure it, and there’s a chance that you'll get some sort of error message or experience some sort of problem. This is pretty easy to do for PC gamers but what about people that are just getting into gaming? There’s a good chance that they will pick a console instead of a PC because it’s much easier to get started.

Well...

Everyone out there is ranting at the graphical power of the X-Box. The turth is this thing is more than a year away gaurented. Think of where computers are going to be in one year from now. Even still I've seen some seriously pimped out G4's which beat the pant's off of X-Box's graphics. So I don't think us PC and Mac buff's have anything to worry about.

I think it would be more appropriate to call this infernal device SUX-Box, as PC's will NEVER die. Unlike EVERY console ever sold. See anyone playing Super NES these days?

dunno

ok, I read a really good article about why the x-box will fail, and i cannot recall where or when. Kinda frustrating, but how many of us have damned the XFL, and look where it's going...(?)

some things to think about, questions you guys might like to answer:
1. broadband internet acess?
2. upgradeable?
3. X-Box's built in rendering technology? (it is pretty damn incredible, which is why so many game designers have signed up)
4. price? (remember how cool the neo geo was? did you freaking buy it though?)
5. Games? (the coolest game I can think of thats coming out on any system, not just consoles, has to be the new metal gear title. Otherwise, what?)
6. Convineince (yeah, it isnt a computer. But i don't remember having to check box specs when I bought a PS1 game)
7. Games on both platforms (would you rather pour all your $ into an x-box, the keyboard, a mouse, all for the money you could use to upgrade your box so it'll run tribes 2?)

finally, what is microsoft best at?
The same thing Intel is:
market saturation, marketing blitz

microsoft is best at taking a fledgling technlology or idea, making a horrible copy, and forcing it down the throats of the consumer. Eventually, it makes the software workable, but it takes quite a while. I'm a mac user, and while I don't have anything against PC's, things didnt go anywhere near right with windows until after 95.
back to the point, console gaming ISNT a fledgling technology. They arent going against a fledgling company on a level playing field. Theyre going up against Sony, a big company with both the money and experience to duke it out in the long haul. Microsoft has the money too, but I forsee the x-box going the way of the Jaguar and the Neo Geo. Great idea on paper, not so great out of the wallet, and when compared to other things lying around already.

::end rant
