I cannot f*cking wait for this game (luckily, it'll be out in about two weeks). I knew it was going to rock when I saw the first screenshots, but now that I've gotten familiar with the story, I want it all the more. Here are some highlights from the PlanetPS2 preview (http://www.planetps2.com/features/firstlooks/2001_q1/shadowofdestiny/)...
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>"Konami (http://www.konami.com/) has created a time travel adventure/RPG for the PlayStation 2 that would make Dr. Emmett Brown sit up and take notice. You see, Eike Kusch has a problem. It would seem that someone has committed a brutal murder right in the middle of the town square in broad daylight. While some may feel that Eike should probably just leave the matter in the hands of the authorities, there is one pesky detail surrounding this ghastly event that just will not let him be... Eike himself was the victim."
"After the grisly murder, on an astral plane far away, some sort of benevolent deity offers Eike the opportunity to prevent his own death by using a time-travel device to return to the past and alter the events that lead to the attack. Players will assume the life (and repeated death) of Eike himself, guiding him through each "space/time-continuum-threatening" step of the way."
"The adventure starts out with Eike taking short trips backward, in an effort to prevent the deed itself, and then continues with our hero traveling back as far as the sixteenth century when all else fails. Gamers should expect to watch their character die repeatedly until the right series of events are altered to effectively make the future occurrence impossible. If the killer waits in hiding in a certain place in the town square, Eike can travel back through time to prevent that object from ever being constructed."
"Being armed with foreknowledge of what will happen is the key to solving the mystery, but a second chance at life for Eike will not be easy to obtain. He is going to have to make several trips to the past with the hope of disrupting time just enough so that the murder never happens. It should also be noted that if Eike doesn't change the correct sequence of events (or only a few of them), our crafty assassin might just approach the deed in a different manner and end up succeeding despite our hero's efforts."
"The game's chapters are very deep and diverse, and there will be many ways to obtain a positive outcome. This fact alone should add to the title's replay value, as gamers will not see all there is to see on a single play through. Perhaps their will even be a "Terminator" path, where Eike can travel backward to kill his murderer's mother... one can only imagine all of the possibilities."
"Exceptional artistic use of color permeates the visuals; the further back in time our hero goes, the more washed-out the color of the country and its people get. The engine's use of sepia tone (think the first ten minutes of the Wizard of Oz) really conveys the sense that our hero is embroiled in a true anachronistic situation, as his personal color scheme remains constant through the whole game and causes him to stand out when traveling to time periods in the very distant past."
"It will take a lot of investigating to unlock certain areas within the game, and Eike will have to meet and get to know many people throughout history. There is even the danger of Eike running into a former version of himself, which, as we all know, will bring about a disruption in space/time that will end existence as we know it."
"Shadow of Destiny is shaping up to be the first A-list adventure title for the PS2. With stunning graphics, simple yet challenging gameplay, and a unique spin on the time-tested murder mystery plot, it would take a serious lack of caring on the parts of the developers to deliver a title that falls short of amazing. Considering the game comes from the minds that brought us the adventure horror classic Silent Hill, and is published by the same company that will bring us Metal Gear Solid 2 the chances of this title turning out to be a disaster are almost nil."[/quote]
