As some of you may have seen in the news, we had a 6.8 magnitude earthquake here in western Washington State yesterday. In fact, being in the city of Olympia myself, I was just 11 miles (~17 km) from the epicenter!! And man did things shake, rattle, and roll for a while there! Luckily I didn't suffer any damage. Just a power outage for a few hours.

Anyway, it made me wonder, how many of you guys have ever experienced a significant earthquake (6.0 or higher)? I'm curious to hear any horror stories you may have. For those of you who've never experienced one, I don't recommend it...

I live about 20-25 miles from the 1994 Northridge 6.7M earthquake. I woke up (it was about 4:24am or something) to feel like I was on the high seas during a storm or something, everything was rockin' and rolling but I was in that semi-state of consciousness, you know, so that didn't help the confusion. By the time I got out of bed and stumbled to the doorframe it was already pretty much over. The only damage we had was a broken vase that fell off a shelf. I remember a few days later I drove through Northridge and seeing the damage was pretty crazy. A Macy's had pretty much collapsed and an apartment building was one floor shorter, that killed a lot of people.

Fun, fun. Is it just me or have there been an unusually high amount of major earthquakes around the world this past year?
