Hey Beppo, I have an idea that may seem strange but just stay me. I was building my level just now removing many extra objects to lower the poly count such as trees and rocks etc. Then I went into a room filled with boxes and ammo and noticed that the poly count was VERY low (I was in front of many actor boxes too, if those were brush boxes the count should have been 100 instead of 8). Now, you said that by making jeeps and tanks actors instead of movers it was easier on the system. What if you made a tree actor? Would it be possible to make a huge forest and not have a huge poly count and not be taxing on a system? When I said tree actors I don't mean those crap UT trees, I mean tall pine trees or oak trees. Forgive me if this is dumb, but I had to post it right now since I don’t see you here often.

man if that'd work... i suggest you give it a try and we might see swaying trees in INF.

(swaying trees are VERY important for us snipers since a moving forest will make us harder to spot).

Crosshairs are for wimps :)

Killing stupid people is not just a hobby, it's a way of life.

And an actor, unlike a built in bsp based tree, could have textures as detailed as the player. I've noticed in many games what makes players stand out against the backgrounds easily is the textures of the map arn't as detailed, and look blurry, while a player model has very sharp textures.

And if swaying trees are added, maybe a win factor could be incorperated. I remember a post long ago when someone suggested making sniping more realistic by making them adjust their scope for distance and windage. Maybe if there was a random wind factor every time a map started that could be implemented.

As far as I know, adjusting for distance and windage is for a controlled situation, such as a hostage rescue scenario. Military battlefield snipers (again, this is merely my knowledge), simply do the compensation by sight without actually dialing the scope in.

The concept of wind and actor trees in general seems really cool, and unfortunately I am no coder/mapper, so I have no idea of its feasibility. Best of luck... :)

Yeah that would probably be hard, since it would be unrealistic if the trees blew against the wind. But since its an actor, maybe they could make the tree rotate so it blows in the winds direction at the start of the map. I think moving trees and other brush would look REALLY cool. That would definitly make Infiltration look more realistic. And as the fur stated, it makes snipers harder to see- I think the tension that fear would create would make Infiltration really fun. Even if they don't have to adjust the scope for windage, it would still be cool if they had to compensate for it manually. I think it would be a nice detail if they could though. That way they could adjust for wind if they wanted, or try to compensate themselves.

IMHO, thats one of the coolest suggestions I've seen. I hope the inf team really considers it

nice to see the forums up and running again...

i think you've stumbled on something quite important, Ignato.

Now jungle warfare would be not only possible, but incredibly realistic and supremely 1337

hey Ignato, I was thinking the same thing. I dont have enough knowledge/experience to do all that fancy stuff myself so if you ever experiment please do tell the how and what.

No problem, I_ABuGa I'll let you know. I'm just wondering what the INF team thinks about this? I heard Warren say that they had many special things planned...so I wonder.

It be really nice having a whole bunch of trees to pick from everything from tall grass to snow covered evergreens. Making the trees moving is a very cool idea too. Maybe I should email the team since I don't see them around a whole lot.

hehe...
guys its easier as ya guess ;)

well the trees in UT for example are meshs... 3D objects like weapons, players aso
the meshs can have animations of course...

so all ya need is someone that can build a nice looking tree in 3DSMax and import it into UT. Give the tree some animations for different wind "factors" and that's it.

The mapper will simply place this tree into a map, setup its rotation and the animation (all in the standard properties)... no special scripts needed for this really.

Well too high poly meshs will have the same probs like high poly brushs but normally their performance is better.

Hey Beppo

Can you also make a tree climable?Maybe add some ladder code to it like Gunman Chronicles? Now that would be sweet. You could make some badass sniping postions with a tree stand if you could climb up the trees.

well, call it a mappers job to get up a tree at the moment... its possible ... some maps out there already have ladders that are actually hidden stairs or movers that lift ya up... there are many ways to do this. So the mapper can place such a structure around a tree too...
But how big should a tree be that is climbable... have a look at the standard trees available in UT at the moment. They are used as decos not as climbable objects. Look at them and now think about a soldier climbing up these trees... I guess ya would start to laugh and not saying WOW... cause it will look damn funny I'm sure ;)
