Just a few things I believe were "Hollywood-ized":
Ed Harris' characters name wasn't 'Konig'..don't know why why would change it, it was really Heinz Thorvald.
There was no 'love-triangle' and Tania and Zeitsev did not end up together after the war. Tania DID live, however.
The hanging boy? No mention of anything remotely like that..more than likely 'movie propaganda' to make you dislike 'Konig'.
The way Ed Harris died? Konig, an expert sniper, thinking he MIGHT have killed Zeitsev, walks STRAIGHT over to where he believes the body to be and gets shot. That was stupid. Throughout the movie he shows great instincts nd intellect yet at the most crucial moment he makes an inexcusable 'rookie' mistake. Dumb dumb dumb.
In the book, Zeitsev knew where Konig(Thorvald) was(under the sheet metal)..Kulikov(who also didn't die in the book) provided Zeitsev with a decoy, when Konig shot it, he saw where he was but could not see him directly.. Zeitsev took a 'blind' shot under the metal at the muzzle flash and killed Konig. Glamourous? No, that's why it's probably true.
Anyway, those were the 'blatant' differences I saw. Note that the book had some fictionalized elements, but those centered around aspects of the characters' lives needed to flesh them out. I just bought the 'original' Enemy at the Gates book, which deals with the ENTIRE battle for Stalingrad.
Hope I didn't bore anyone, but although I liked the movie, I think Hollywood did some stupid things with it.
I am the Walrus, koo koo kachoo.
Why do people insist on putting their 'two cents' in when they don't have a penny to spare?
