When i click the Infiltration icon, it just beeps. I AM POSSITIVE I SAW THIS PROBLEM IN THE MANUAL, OR THE F.A.Q., OR SOMEWHERE, BUT I CANT FIND IT AGAIN!!! i used the search and found something written from Disturbed called "Mac Launcher Read Me". I read it, it was all about how you need to have atleast 1mb more free memory than the amount of preferred memory size. Quite frankly, it confuses me!!! HAS ANYBODY EXPERIENCED THIS THAT KNOWS WHAT TO DO???<:o(
your help will be appreciated

first off, no need for all those posts. if your question doesn't get answered jsut reply to it to send it back up to the top. additionally people are probably ignoring you because all the posts and the all the CAPS are putting them off.

now, to try and answer all your questions:

my system is a G3 400, 256MB ram and an ATI Radeon, with this system i can comfortably run at 800x600 32bit all details high and it only get's choppy on big maps. however, to be honest, i don't think INF will run too good on your system at all. i could be wrong though. INF is a lot more demanding than normal UT, but i'll at least try and get it running for you so you can try it for yourself and hopefully prove me wrong.

first off the memory. i cannot reccomend enough that you get more memory, you said 32 more is all you could get, this will help not only in INF but in the performance of your entire system. if at all possible i would try and get at least 128, i know that may not be feasible for you to do but try to get as close to that as possible. you may want to try buying RAM online, i've seen pretty good prices at memory to go (http://www.memorytogo.com), for your iMac a 128MB module from there is $40 for the standard size and $60 for the low profile one. i believe you have the first generation iMac right? if so just be aware that installing RAM in those is quite a difficult feat and if you're not very comfortable with opening up and getting inside your system you may want to have somebody else do it. unfortunately most computer shops will charge way more than is acceptible for this so try and find a friend to do it.

now for the beep, the problem with the beep is that UT/INF's memory requirement is greater than your available amount of memory. this probably won't be something we can fix until you get more memory, but here's what to do:

first off, just click once on the UT application(not the INF launcher) then either go File -> Get Info or press Command-I, on later versions of Mac OS you will then specifically have to go to the Memory screen of the info window, but on older versions it will show the memory requirements on the main window. make a note of what is in the "preferreed" box. this is how much free memory you have to have in order to start UT/INF. now, with no programs active go under the apple menu and select "About This Macintosh" this will show you how much RAM is being used. your free RAM needs to be at least 1MB higher than the UT requirment. there are a lot of little things we can try to maximize your amount of free memory but i won't get into them right now since the best solution is really to just get more Physical ram.

post back to this thread how your RAM purchasing goes and then we'll continue from there.

oh, and when INF starts up it shows the normal UT splash screen in the center and a scrolling log down in the lower left.

EDIT: ok, a little more research on memory, you do have the first gen iMac right? the bondi blue one? 233 mhz right? i'm finding it diffucult to find full info on this but i believe you have two memory slots inside, each can accomodate a max of 64, giving you a total of 128. so you'd have to but two 64 modules to get 128 and replace the 32 with one of them. or just add 64 to the empty one for 96 total. that's the "official" word from apple. unofficially, the slots support modules 128MB in capacity, so you could purchase the 128 module and install it in addition to the 32 you already have giving you 160 megs. i think the original 32 is in the lower memory slot so you wouldn't have to buy the more expensive low profile SO-DIMM. if you can afford this i really reccomend it, best $40 you'll ever spend. also, the original iMac only had 2MB of Video Ram, you can buy a 4MB expansion for only $18 from the same website i mentioned above. i also reccomend this highly.

here's a direct link (http://www.memorytogo.com/?u=2839A982516DD545&cmd=prod&manu=apple&media=desktop&prod=CAP157) to their iMac page. good luck!

hey thanks i appreciate you helping me out on this stuff in about a week or two i am ordering that 128MB! thanks for telling me about it...
i did the "get info" thing and the "about this comp." and in the "about this comp", with only the MacOS opened, it said "Largest Unused Block: 110MB" is that the thing that i am supposed to look at? or do i have to find out unused RAM some other way? Well in "get info" on the UT icon, it said that the preferred size was 205000K. that equals 205MB right? (no math jokes please! hehe) well if all of that info is right, then i need atleast 105MB more to play the game! are my calculations correct? if so, is it definite that the 128MB is the solution?

thanks ;)

yep, you did it correctly. you have 110MB free but UT was set to require 205MB, that's why you're getting the beep/quit. i cannot reccomend the 128 enough, more memory will not only help you with just games but should imporve the performance of your system all around.

after you've installed the memory, go to AppleMenu->Control Panels->Memory. you'll see an area where you can adjust the amount of Virtual Memory. i'd set it to 256MB. also, you could probably lower UT's memory requirement a little bit. to around 180~190MB if you want but it's up to you.

and if you follow this link (http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n43012) you'll find instructions for installing memory in your iMac

BA, so you figured out its one meg more than the prefered size. I had thought it was more but I never really got around to testing it. I did figure out why reinstalls helped a lot of folks. It actually quite simple really. Most people uped their memory for ut after installing and forgot about it. When they reintall is just puts the original in at a lower partition size. I also think but I may be wrong that one of the pattches ups the prefered.

In any case, it great to see you helping out so many folks. I just moved and don't have my old cable modem so I just don't have the patience to get on from home over a 28.8. Though I'm hoping to get a little more active again in soon. Great job though, as a support person IRL I know it's hard to sometimes go and do what you do at work at home.

well, i don't know for sure it's 1MB... somebody else said 1MB and it makes sense to me but i haven't gotten to test it personally yet.

thanks again for the kind words, although i haven't been around much the past couple days(full time job + midterms + gf = no free time). i fear 2.85 will come out tomorrow and i won't even be able to play untill wednesday or so :(
