Take 5 MB off your Preferred Memory of UT. Get info on UT.

I cant even get INF to launch at all - finder suggests it is a memory problem and that UT preferred memory should be set 500k lower than free memory which it is. I have the same spec as new model no.15 (iMac G3 500mhz
MACos 9.0.4
Rage128 pro ATI) except with 192mb ram. I have virtual memory set at 193mb, and it still wont launch even after a reboot. Im annoyed as I play INF on my PC at work, but cant get it to work on this mac. If anyone has any suggestions please try and keep them in 'spoonfeeding idiots' terms as I am new to the world of macs and am confused to f*%k already.

are you sure it's set lower than free memory and not set lower than *total* memory? Mac Os is probably(with the default bloated extention set) going to take up 40~50 Megs of Ram.
do this:
increase your VM, the rule of thumb is VM can be increased up to 150% physical RAM before it starts affecting performance(anymore so than is experienced jsut by having VM on) so at max set it to 288MB. to do this you click on the apple menu in the upper left, go down to "Control Panels", then "Memory" and you should see the little box where you adjust the amount of VM. hopefully this alone will solve your problem but if not then we go about checking free memory and memory requirments
first, from a fresh boot with no apps open go to the apple menu and select "About This Computer" it will show you your total RAM(including VM) and how much is free, make note of the free memory. now, click just one time on the UnrealTournament application(NOT the INF launcher) then go to the "File" menu and select "Get Info" then "Memory." only pay attention to what is in the "Preferred" box. this will be in KB and not MB. the number here should be at least 1MB less than your free memory. i would allow more room than that as while you play INF the System will start to use more RAM. i would allow 5-10MB of space. also, in my experience i've found that even if INF loads, a lot of the maps will crash out with memory errors if my UT memory isn't set to at least 180MB.

Thanks BA,
Cranking VM up to 220M and giving INF 180M to play with seems to have done the trick for fixing map crashes (especially Kosovo) and other unpleasant crashing behavior. knock wood.
BTW I wanted to note how nice it was to find a gaming forum where the answer to "mac problems" WASN'T "Get a PC!"http://unreal.infopop.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
