View Full Version : I'm thinking of Starting an East Coast Server

I looked at some DSL options and i have good availability. Well, I want to make a reliable server and am not sure what formula i should use to figure the max player amount. I can get anywhere from 144k or 1.1meg SDSL. Or from 1.5/384 ADSL to 608k/10meg. Just wondering for just one server, possibly two.

With a 384K connection, you can safely support a 16 player server but, when it is full, you won;t have much bandwidth left to use for yourself. We have 768K/768K dedicated DSL and have had 32 players on at once before and it was pretty good.

Just make sure you get a Deidcated Link that is provisioned for the full bandwdith. Some DSL providers offer 768K/768K connections for little money but they are provisioned for 128K/64K minimum bandwidth and burst up to 768K both ways. These connections are MUCH slower and are not good for running servers on. Not sure what the rates are on the East Coast, but we pay about $200.00 per month for our connection. The same connection provisioned at 128K/64K with burst is $45.00 per month. Tried that. It sucked. Be warned.

I hope you get one going. We need a East Coast server out there.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

At Capunet i can get 384k/384k for about 100 bucks a month, but i have to commit for 12 mo. I'm getting some quotes from Esario, there i can get up to 1.1mbp/s.

With the good price from Capunet i think i'll be able to get a more powerful machine. The only problem is that i am 11, 900ft or so from the CO, so any upgrades would be impossible. So i am in a bit of indesicion.

I guess i'll wait till i get the Quote for my SDSL and Esario first then. Maybe browse about a few others.

AND, what makes the best server. I was thinking about getting a Linux machine, but not sure if i should get Win2k instead. Cost is a major issue. Also, for hardware what specs would be good enough that they wouldn't bog down gameplay?

Well, we use Windows 2000 Advanced Server on our systems and it works very well. I have run the server on Linux too and it worked well, but I was not familiar with Linux so I switched when Windows 2000 came out.

As for system reqs. It kind of depends on the OS. I would recommend a Pentium II class or higher with at least 64MB RAM per instance of Inf server.

Unix requirements are a bit less. probably a high-end pentium with about 64MB of RAM would support 2 servers.

Hope this helps,

The price is right as well as it being good. I'm personally not fluent in it, but i know someone who is very much so. Are you sure 64mb is enough, just seems to little... It'd be great if it was as i am on somewhat of a budget (about $700-$900 on the machine).

I have another dilemma. I can get 384k/1.1mb ADSL for about 80 bucks/mo. But i can get 384k/384k SDSL for about $120(great deal actually)that comes with a domain name, POP account, 1 ip, etc. Should i get the SDSL or the ADSL?

Another thing, i was thinking about using alladvantage to get some extra money, is it worth it? I've heard it's pretty good, but not sure about it.

Both the memory and the bandwidth depend on how many players and how many servers you want to run. Each Instance of the Infiltration server will use about 20MB of RAM of an NT system and only a little less on Linux, as far as I know.

With 384K of upstream bandwidth, you should be able to support 16 players. The only problem with that, however, is that it leaves you no bandwidth to browse with when the server is full. I have gotten used to checking the server load first thing before I browse. Pings will skyrocket if you start downloading bug files. Web browsing does not affect it as bad, but you need to consider this.

Hope this information helps,

Well this looks like the right place to get started. My clan (Unknown1s) will be hosting an INF server hopefully sometime mid next week. Its running on a Dual PII-400 box w/256MB Ram and its plugged directly into an ISPs backbone. We are fortunate enough to have a benefactor who is on the technical staff there, and he keeps our server in their Co-location room. The server is already running a Counter-Strike server (cstrike.unknown1s.com for those who play C-S) but Spyder (our benefactor) says its only using 20% of the system resources and we could easily run a second server. Our Server will be located out of Tampa, Florida.

Would it be OK if i referred him to you, if he has questions about setting up INF on our Linux Box?

Well, I am not a linux Guru in any way, but as long as he knows Linux, I can probably help if he runs into trouble.

Sure, have him e-mail me if he needs help.

Glad to hear another server is coming.
