Deus Ex 2 console petition
Sunday, May 20, 2001, 10:28 | Despot
As can be expected, a petition regarding the Deus Ex 2 console has been started, and I quote the creator of the petition:
The Deus Ex community was dealt a devastating blow yesterday with the announcement that Deus Ex 2 was being created primarily for consoles then being ported to the PC. The community strongly disagrees with the actions of both Eidos and Ion Storm, believing that the game should be developed for PC's first then ported to consoles at a later date. As a result we have created an online petition in the hope Ion Storm and Eidos may change their decision. We are doing this for the good of the game; we want to see it being of a quality as high if not higher than the original, we don't want business decisions and money to influence people's decisions. Aw HELL NO!

If this goes though we'll have to put up with modular savegames and spasticulate control mapping. NO game ported from console to PC has been free of such nonesense. Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, ect. In all of them gamers had to endure some bull**** like not being able to remap a key, the complete lack of mouse support or the simple inability to skip loading sequences that in the original console game served as a grace period for CD reading but are otherwise nonexistant on the PC.

Sides, it's an FPS damnit. FPS games are OUR house! >:|

Oh god no... they'll probably simplify the controls to be more playable with a gamepad! <=O

Nooooooooooooooo!!!

Eidos has always been a bunch of console whores. It pisses me off when they actually put out a good game because you know that support for it and the community it generates is non existant from them. They are the paramount of Big Corp as Badguy. They have released tons of games with bugs without addressing them. They have constantly lied about the system specs a game requires so they can sell to a larger audience. Yet they put out some games like Deus Ex that are genuinely fantastic. Then they put out a game like Revenant. Go figure...

Made for consoles? You're kidding right? Deus Ex 2 on a console would be like putting leeches on a sandwich. I don't want to see Deus Ex 2 to end up dying on some pathetic console like PS2 or X-Box. No game has ever been better for being on a console.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly rumors spread in this business and how willing people are to accept rumor as fact.

Right now, there are rumors circulating on the net that Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3 will ship on console first, with PC "ports" coming later. That is simply not true. Let me assure you that we have no plans to release a console version of DX2 or T3 before a PC version or to compromise one version to accomodate the needs of any other version we might develop.

Both DX2 and T3 are a ways off -- making immersive simulations takes time! -- and official announcements regarding these projects will be made in the future. Until then, let me just say that the members of the DX2 and T3 teams, many of whom helped create the original Thief and Deus Ex, are determined to meet and surpass your justifiably high expectations.

Everyone in this studio is as committed to making games like Underworld, System Shock, Thief and Deus Ex as you are committed to playing them. The vehemence with which you've expressed your concern is ample evidence that you love these games as much as we do. All I ask is that you trust us now as you always have in the past. You won't be disappointed...

Rogueleader already beat you to that.

I wouldn't put it past Eidos though. Eidos is the gaming embodiment of corporate evil.

I really can't see even Eidos screwing people like that. Deus Ex did amazingly well on the PC and Mac, winning all sorts of awards including the PC Gamer "Game Of The Year". I can't see a company turning it's back on an established fan base by making the game for console first.

Besides, most companies know that console games don't port well to computers, and that the opposite is a much better system (unless of course, said company is Microsoft! ).

Does anyone know the engine they are planning to use for DE2? Is it the Thief 3 engine, or something else?

I just hope it isn't an engine deep-seeded into Windows with DirectX crap. Those engines never get ported to the Mac.
