View Full Version : Has anybody ever seen a real ghost ?

Or been in a scary situation?
Just wondering
Just recently I've been seeing things in my paripheral vision. I'll be looking down the hallway, and then in my vision I'll see something, just for a split second, run by me. Sometime it's white sometime it's black, and I can never make out what it is. I'm not sure if it's just my vision, or if it is actually a ghost or whatever. My eyes have, of course, played tricks on me before, but it is happening very frequently now...
I'm scared. I really am.
And to make it worse, my family thinks I'm joking.

I haven't seen anything extraordinary but I've heard something.
After moving into this new house several years back, I was happily watching some American sit-com:D and all of a sudden I heard a woman's voice talking into my left ear. I quickly looked to the door thinking that my mom just opened the door to say something to me without knocking but it was closed. I was quite puzzled then. I couldn't make out what the voice said because I was into watching this show and caught unexpected. I hated to think but I looked up to the loft just in case there was something there. Nothing.
I didn't get scared or anything since that was the first and only time that ever happened to me. But I still wonder what it was to this day...
ps. I would freak out if I saw something, though:D

Yes, quiet often too. Normally I'll hear something, look in that direction, and see one or two black spirit lookin things, they look at me, then vanish. All within 2-3 seconds.

that's truly freaky...
My mom's felt a presence of someone above her head while she was sleeping since she was little, though. That's when she couldn't move her body at will. What's it called, I don't remember the word, but that's said to have something to do with spirits. You are awake but your body isn't responding at all, the kind of thing if you know what I mean. My mom got that, and couldn't tilt her head up to see who was above her head but she [i]knew[i/] someone was sitting there staring down at her. Freaky...

You are probably being paranoid. That would explain why you see them out of the corner of your eye but can't look directly at these "ghosts". You can't really make out what you see at the edge of your line of sight, you can only detect movement. Just a simple thing like a shadow cast by a tree moving in the wind could make you think you saw something out of the corner of your eye.

I'm mad. I knew what the state of sleep was called until I actually wrote this post :) But, I heard something about this on a radio chat with a doctor. In this state of sleep, people often get scared because they can't move. Sometimes, people think they have become parylized. That state of sleep is kinda of like an "Unconscious Consciousness".
People usually are freaked of it, but I heard from that radio chat that if you learn to "control" it, it can be a great thing. The reason why is you actually, in that state of sleep, can control exactly what you dream. And it's supposedly supposed to seem pretty real. So, when you are in that state, my guess is you probably just close your eye's and start to dream whatever you want (like maybe you are really in an INF game hehe).

I think i know what youre talking about LifesBane, let me see if i can elaborate.
We all have two nerve systems, one we use when we're awake, and one we use while sleeping.
If memory serves me, they are called the contious and the uncontious nerve systems, we can fully controll the contious one (unless brain damaged, but thats a differend storry), but ouer contious mind has no controll over the uncountious nerve system, witch is why we cant move.
Every now and then we can experiance wakeing up before the contious nerve system kicks in, and obviously cant move, allso, feeling like youre boddy is full of needles is common in this state, the only thing you can do about it is wait till youre contious nerve system gets started.
Its happened to me some times, and obviously i was freaked over it, untill i found out what it was.
Now on the point of ghosts, i went to a school some years ago, an 500 year old mantion, big place, and there where nights where it deffinately was haunted, people saw things, people heard things, people felt things, me included.
There was one room in particular, actually the only 4 bed room, each thursday, if you entered it, something would push you hard on the shoulder, allmost enough to knock you over.....freaky stuff.

If you see stuff in your peripheral vision is usually a sign of tiredness, like in my case :D
Sometimes your mind will play tricks on you, if you believe what your mind is doing you will continue to do it and fake it but it will be your mind that is controlling you to fake it but you will not think that it is happening.
Hard to explain what I mean but if no one understands I'll try again, it's just I'm really really hungry and I smell food.

I did a study abroad program when I was in college. There was a group of 41 of us (11 guys, 30 girls) and we lived in a 16th century Medici villa in Florence, Italy.
We were out late one night exploring the city (read: drinking) and got home pretty late. The next morning we had classes, also in the villa, from 8 until 10 AM, with a short break at 9. During that break I decided to go upstairs and go back to sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow I felt something very odd, so I opened my eyes.
At the foot of my bed was a woman in her late 20's or early 30's, with wavy brown hair, a little shoulder length. She was wearing a white flowing gown of some sort. The only really odd thing was that I could see the window across the room through her. I found that rather disconcerting so I tried to sit up. No luck. I couldn't move at all. I strained a few more times to no avail and finally gave up. I looked at her for a second and she just looked back at me. I closed my eyes and repeated to myself, "You're not here, you're not here, you're not here, ..." a dozen or so times and when I opened my eyes, sure enough...she was gone.
I sat up on the edge of my bed, gathered myself, got up and used the restroom, and sat back down on my bed. My abdominal muscles hurt for 3 days from trying to sit up. I waited there until class got out, replaying the scene in my mind. If I close my eyes and think about it now I can still see her as vividly as that morning.
I told my friends about what had happened when they got back from class, some believed, some didn't. I talked to the old Italian housekeeper we had, Sara, and she said that yes, there is a woman who lives in the villa. Her name was Vernazza and she was one of the Medici's lovers centuries ago. They had a lovers quarrel and she threw herself out of the window (yes, that same window I could see through her) and into the courtyard below, killing herself. Sara said that she's seen every year by someone, or they'll see her impression in one of the beds, as if she is sleeping there. She is supposed to be good, and protect the villa, at least according to Sara. I must say that I didn't feel as if I were in any danger when I couldn't move, it was just a sensation I didn't enjoy.
Later that year we were studying for an art history final and had just decided to call it a night around 2:30 AM. A few minutes after we turned out the lights, my friend Kris (one of the main skeptics) yelled out, "MMMMMMMike, she's here dude, she's here!" as if someone had removed a hand from his mouth, allowing him to speak. The same kind of thing had happened to him. He couldn't move or speak. I never attempted to speak and now regret it.
Other odd things happened that year as well that we didn't realize could be related to Vernazza until we looked back upon them in retrospect. A girl (matching the description of the one I saw) was seen standing over someone in our room while he was sleeping at about 3 in the morning. She just stood there, watching him sleep. It wasn't any of the girls in the villa, but the person who saw her just wrote it off to tiredness or a dream. There are a few others, but this is getting long and I should wrap it up.
That's my story, and before you chalk it up to any dream state or personal biases, let me assure you that neither is the case. I'm a trained scientist and a skeptic by nature, but I know what I saw and what I experienced.

this thread is freaking me out... :) it's 3 AM as i read it, and the fire escape door is in my room and right behind me... shiiiiiiiiiiiiit:)
regularly, at least every few months, usually more, when i am just drifting off into sleep, i am all of a sudden hit in the face by a force. that's the best word i can think of, because it feels like i am being punched, and my head jerks back, but there is nothing there, and i know nothing is there, because i am alone in the room, or my eyes were open before it happened. in the past it's been my brother in the top bunk, and now it's my girlfriend on the other side of the bed. it's hard enough to wake me up, and kinda daze me, but there is never a mark or anything. this happened in my parent's house, my room in residence last year, and now my apartment. one friend i talked to about said the same thing happens to him, but other than that no one else. anybody else have this happen to them? i would like to hear about it.
also i am convinced i saw the virgin mary (i am catholic) in a candle flame when i was a kid saying the rosary with my family. i've also heard people speak in tongues, hebrew i think, but i consider the above two religous, not ghosts really. anyone have any crazy religous experiences to share as well?

Electronic Telegraph, by Robert Matthews, 28 June 1998
Research into a supposed haunting has revealed that
all the classic signs of ghosts can be explained as the result of very low frequency sound waves trapped inside buildings.
Capable of being triggered by nothing more than the
wind passing over walls, the sound waves cannot be heard. But scientific tests have revealed that they have effects on the human body that can account for the wraith-like appearance of ghosts and even the
feelings of cold and terror that accompany them.
The explanation emerged after a chance discovery by a
university academic who found himself personally involved in a haunting, late one night in the laboratory of a medical manufacturing company based in the Midlands.
Vic Tandy, an expert in computer-assisted learning at
Coventry University, had been told that the building was haunted, but dismissed it as a joke. He changed his mind after the events that unfolded one night as he worked alone in the office.
"As I sat at the same desk writing, I began to feel
increasingly uncomfortable," he said. "I was sweating but cold and the feeling of depression was noticeable - but there was also something else. It was as though something was in the room with me.
"Then I became aware that I was being watched, and a
figure slowly emerged to my left. It was indistinct and on the periphery of my vision, but it moved just as I would expect a person to. It was grey, and made no sound. The hair was standing up on the back of
my neck - I was terrified."
Mr Tandy plucked up courage to look at the apparition
face-on - only to see it fade and then vanish. "I decided I must be cracking up, and went home," he said.
The explanation emerged the following morning. Mr
Tandy, a fencing enthusiast, was modifying one of his foils and had left the blade clamped in a vice while he went in search of oil. He said: "When I returned, I noticed that the free end of the blade was frantically vibrating up and down." Mr Tandy, a trained engineer, realised that the blade might be receiving energy from very low frequency sound waves filling the laboratory - so low that they could
not be heard.
Tests duly revealed the existence of a "standing
wave" trapped in the laboratory, which reached a peak in intensity next to Mr Tandy's desk. "It turned out to be caused by a new extraction fan, which was making the air vibrate at about 19 cycles per second," Mr
Tandy said. "When the fan's mounting was altered, the ghost left with the standing wave."
Working with Dr Tony Lawrence of the university's
school of health, Mr Tandy has now discovered the significance of this rate of vibration. In research published in the latest issue of the Journal of Society for Psychical Research, they reveal that
"infra-sound" around this frequency has been linked to a whole host of physiological effects - including breathlessness, shivering and feelings of fear.
Most significantly, research by Nasa, the American
space agency, has shown that the human eyeball has a resonant frequency of 18 cycles a second, at which it starts to vibrate in sympathy to infra-sound. "This would cause a serious smearing of vision," Dr
Lawrence said.
While acoustic experts have known about the health
effects of infra-sound for many years, until now no one has made the link to ghosts. Mr Tandy said that he has since come across two more "hauntings" where low-frequency sound may be to blame. He said: "One
occurred in a corridor of a building that had a wind tunnel in the basement, and it was operating at the time of the sighting."
He said, however, that the wind blowing over a window
in a side wall of a long corridor might be enough to create a standing wave, similar to that formed by blowing over the neck of a bottle. "It would be interesting to look at reports of haunted houses, to see if the 'ghosts' tend to appear in long, windy corridors," he said.
The discovery of the infra-sound effect is already
creating a stir among experts in paranormal phenomena. Professor David Fontana of the University of Cardiff, a former president of the Society of Psychical Research, said: "It is very interesting, as it gives us
another scientific variable we can fit into the picture."
Professor Fontana said, however, that infra-sound was
unlikely to be the final answer. "It cannot explain those cases where there is some interaction between the person and the apparition - as there is with poltergeists for example," he said. "The problem is that whenever you get a potential explanation like this, you find that there are a whole lot of things it cannot account for."

I've seen quite a few ghosts. One of which I'm told is my long dead grandmother. Apparently the entire family get visits from her quite regularly.
A better story than that though.
Here in Sydney we have an old disused quarantine station. It was used back in the 1700-1800s when people were first settling in Australia. Anyway, they run "Ghost Tours" through the station, but you can jsut get a pass and spend some time in there on your own.
A group of us (myself, 2 friends, their girlfriends, and my then girlfriend [bitch ]) grabbed a flashlight each, and set of into the station. Its only about a hectare and has quite a few buildings.
We saw two ghosts that night. Some people saw one, others saw the 2nd, I saw both, and I hope to god I never do again.
After reading some little tidbits of information scattered around on plauqes, we read about a chinese ghost that was said to watch over the area. Sure enough, at the end of the road, there he was. Just standing there. Dressed in traditional chinese pyjama sort of clothes, with the pony tail and all. That was incredibly freaky, but being the über skeptic, I figured it was a projection or something.
The 2nd was much more disturbing. We came around to the mourge (I expected to see ghosts here if anywhere.)
Now the mourge building is actually 2 rooms, seperated by a wall, but that wall has a huge hole cut in it, and a bench. On the other side of the wall is a slab. 3 of us were in the laboratory section, and the other 3 in the section with the slab.
Those of us in the laboratory section heard a strange noise that the other 3 didn't. It's a hard noise to describe. Its not quite a moan, and not quite a groan... think of a screaming cat crossed with a rusty gate... but much lower. We turned around, and saw a strange apparition, and although it wasn't quite clear what it was, we could make out a face, and an open chest cavity.
It was (for what we understand) the ghost of a person who had had an autopsy performed on them. It was laying on the slab, resting back on its elbows, staring at us as if to say "look what they've done to me". It didnt speak, but its lips were moving.
I didn't sleep for a few nights after that
Can anyone beat a mourge victim ghost?

My mom was home alone one time when she was about 8 or 9 years old. Her older sister had left for a bit and told her to sit in this rocking chair and not move until she got back. While my mom was sitting there, the cabinet doors in the hallway of the house all started opening and closing by themselves. My mom crawled under the rocking chair and rolled up in a ball crying until my aunt got back.
My mom said that in the same house they used to see something walking in the halls at night and she's told me a few other stories of happenings in that house.
I think there are spirits or "ghosts" that walk the earth, but I don't think they are the spirits of dead people. I think they are the angels that were cast out of Heaven when satan revolted against God.
"...And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth..."
That's a quote from the Book of Revelation. The "stars of heaven" are the angels.
I've never seen any ghosts myself and I hope I never do. I've seen "things" before though. In the past when I've been VERY tired (awake more than 24 hours) my eyes have started playing tricks on me and I've "seen" things. But I know in those moments I'm not seeing ghosts, I just need some sleep.
BP - Very interesting indeed.

This is wierd because right now, I am watching a show on ghosts. In one part (This is real by the way) they walk into a room and see a chair rocking by itself. all of the sudden it stops, and the geiger a counter and magnetometer they are holding both start going crazy. Then everything stops (Just the counter and magnetometer. The night vision camera stays on). Spooky. I have also heard of two women sleeping in a room in florida and a ghost appearing. Apparently one of the women had a five to ten minute conversation with the ghost. Two years ago, I thought everyone who believed iin ghosts was a quack. Then I started doing some reasearch. Wether it is human spirits or not, there is definitley something out there.(Note: a ghost of a person usually seems to appear when someone has an extremely traumatic death or a strong attatchment to a certain place). Also ghosts tend to show personality traits. Some are extremelly friendly, others play pranks, some are evil. Another thing I saw was a haunted theatre. Two ghosts: one played occasional harmless pranks. Most of the people liked this ghost. There was an evil ghost two. An exorcism was performed and the evil ghost apparently left, but the friendly one stayed.
While I have thought I have had a paranormal experience before, there could be explanations. For instance, in our old house, whenever I was in a certain room, and only when I was alone, there was about a one in ten chance of the lights flickering madly until I left the room, usually screaming and running. It could have been something electrical, because it affected the TV, but here are two reasons I think not: one: The TV just turned off, not flickered. Two: It did not affect my super NES. It stayed on.
Quote: "Heck, if I was a ghost, all I'd want to do is play pranks on people!"

Bunch of interesting things...
I used to have those "hit by a force" dreams (dreams I repeat) when I was a little kid. Sometimes dreams can be so real you almost feel like you are "hit" by something...here's the way I almost see it, it's kind of an interesting theory, really:
In the dream state, you could have a seemingly 2 hour dream in 10 seconds. In the dreams I had, in one instant, I heard a tiger-like roar, then felt a sudden pain in my leg (like I was bitten). I woke up, checked my leg, and nothing was there, no marks etc ( of course ).
When you sense pain, your brain sends electronic signals to nerves, basically, am I right?
So maybe, you dream faster than those signals. Maybe, when you first detect those signals being sent out, occaisonally your body while in the dream state tries to make sense of those signals and has a dream that kinda relates to it. So maybe a sharp pain translate into a lion roar (maybe you saw a lion biting in a movie). So, you dream that a lion is roaring, and the spasm or pain or whatnot hits you...
Hard to say :)
BTW: A bunch turned into this one because I have to type the rest of my "Bunch of interesting things..." in the morning :)

that's the best explanation i've heard, but i don't think i am dreaming. i am still awake when it happens... you know when you are just drifting off to sleep and you can still wake yourself up if you want, but you know you are almost there? it's at that point....

Hmm, I thought I saw something at my old house when I was about 5 or 6, I'm not quite sure.
I had my door open trying to get to sleep, and outside my roo was a hallway, fairly narrow. The lights in it were all on.
I saw a woman dressed in a viel or robe, like a nun or some images of the Virgin Mary floating above the hallway right outside my door.
She was there for about 2-3 seconds. I wasn't scared for some reason, she looked kind of sad then she vanished.
I think that the most obvious explaination of it was my imagination. well, she wasn't transparent and she had a blue tinge around here, and at that image most people's imaginations are VERY active.
