View Full Version : Move it, people!

19th Apr 2000, 04:07 PM
I've been roaming this forum for two months now, and I've seen a lot of questions get posted over and over and over again.

Instead of telling newbies they should try searching the forums, why not move the search option to the top of the page? I mean NOBODY ever looks at the bottom of a webpage! And you put it way to the right? Why didn't you just match the text color with the background color? /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

Just put a shiny new button next to New Post and Reply. Or add a textbox for a quick text search (with a shiny new button) and a link to ADVANCED SEARCH (i.e. the existing page). As I mostly search on nickname, that would make me feel special every time I searched for something. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Maybe it's a good idea to add a forum "Newbie FAQ" as well (and include a REALLY big shiny search button there).

Maybe you can make a gate. So everybody has to click away a "By clicking here I took notice that a Search Forums (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~unreal/ubb/cgi/search.cgi?action=intro) link exists. I will not ask any stupid questions that have already been answered before." message.
And directly below that a big blinking Butto: "I AGREE!"
Would be quiet annoying. /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

BTW there is a FAQ how to use the Forums and how you search (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~unreal/ubb/cgi/search.cgi?action=intro) them.
So this IS actually the FAQ for Newbies (they can search (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~unreal/ubb/cgi/search.cgi?action=intro) the Archive). But I agree with you that noone actually uses it (I do!).

Yes I'm insane! And I'm totally happy with it!

/~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif A gate would indeed be very annoying (and you'd have to make the continue option very hard to find, to make everybody actually read the page).

I know there's already a FAQ covering how to use the forums (and that you can read about searching there), but I'm talking about a "Newbie FAQ" forum. It would include all those posts with "newbie" questions, like:<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI>How do I install Umods?
<LI>How do I dodge?
<LI>What is that Shock Combo thingy y'all keep talking about?
<LI>How do I respawn?
<LI>My novice bots keep killing me! (Am I doing something wrong?)
<LI>What's a .zip file?
<LI>How do I get into #planetunreal?
<LI>Is there a way to setup your own speechbinds?
<LI>I keep switching to the snotgun!
<LI>Is it OK if I let my mom play UT using my nick?
<LI>How do I.... well, you get the general idea.

And PU just put the Search Forum link in the worst place possible. We could have a poll about who ever looks at the bottom of a web page, when he(or she!) has already found what they're looking for (i.e. a place to post one of the questions mentioned above).

Don't forget the Search button! (It's really important) /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

OK people. Be honest. Who of you has ever found (or even used) the Search Forums (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~unreal/ubb/cgi/search.cgi?action=intro) link? Especially as a newbie you should first look if your question has already been answered before. But be honest again: How many of you have already done so.

I will start: I use the Search Forums (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~unreal/ubb/cgi/search.cgi?action=intro) link to find the threads I've posted to before to see whther someone did respond or not.
I never used it to find answers to my questions though.

Another question: Do you think the link is a little bit apart?

I'm serious about this! Moderators: don't make me email you! ;)

I used to search thing once when i had a tech question...no help

but i used it again when i wanted to find the Roost, and that did help... so...?=/

it is on the left frame tho, search that is.

"how do i respawn"? you've got to be kidding me......=)
Maybe a faq on how to use IRC...that would be useful i think

We tend to laugh at hillbillies, and I guess that's okay. But let me tell you something about hillbillies: they're fun to laugh at. Oh, I guess I said that.

I don't understand what you mean! If you are using IE4.0 or better and use frames, you should see a menu to the left of every topic that lists

Main Menu
- Edit Profile
- Register User
- Set Preferences
- View FAQ
- Search Forums

Active Forums
- Planet Unreal
- Unreal
- Unreal Tournament
- Unreal Engine Games
- Troubleshooting
- Editing
- Off Topic

this stuff. Notice that - Search Forums is right there!

Did you know I'd never noticed that menu before? I usually scroll down after loading the page to see who's logged in. I just used the link at the bottom of the page.

IMO, the point still stands, though. The search forums option should be made much more obvious. The two tiny little search links are placed where you hardly ever look (especially if you're a newbie and you see this great, big, friendly NEW POST button).

I did a search on "search+forum" and got over 200 topics. (As I found out later, this was partly because Rooster once changed his signature to a "Search the Forums!" add. :))

Furthermore, how hard can it be to add another button to the forum pages? That's about five minutes work. While without it, there's at least five questions posted every day that have been answered before.

Jing: yes, I was kidding you ;)

You mean to tell me that this message board doesn't have an FAQ for the game?! UNREAL!! :D

If it's true, let's write up one; make it a community effort. How does that sound?

Search forums are a great way of finding old threads that are totally hilarious. You can bring some of the old ones back to life (even if they're locked) by creating a link. It's a wonderful feature. :)

This took me about six minutes to make. Now would it be that hard to add it to the page?

Seriously, it would really decrease the number of newbie posts. This week alone we had three questions about weapon priorities and the UT.ini. A search button could have taken care of those.

FYI: I have no problem with repetitive questions, I just showed you a way to get rid of some of them. I really expected feedback from the moderators, as a least one of them has already made clear people should search the forums instead of asking those *cough* stupid *cough* questions.

Ignoring those posts is just danged rude to newbies and I have no desire to do the search for them or retype the answer again and again.

I have no control over the forum design. Stallion does all that... try bringing this to his attention. :)
