I'm not big on the M60, and would really like to see the team complete the M249 SAW properly (they have said before that they want to have chain-linking capability while firing, as well as an animated 1st and 3rd person open chain feed: which are two of the major issues impeding the implementation of the weapon from what I understand) before planning another LMG.

However, once that happens, another LMG would be a good idea, and I'd like to see something in a 7.62x51mm NATO; like the H&K HK21E (http://www.hkpro.com/hk21e.htm)

However I too would like to see an 7.62mm MG, just because I'm a firm believer of the idea, that MGs, even LMGs, need more power than an AR. But the M60 would be a very bad choice; why should anyone take it? Because it's an American weapon? I don't think so.
A FN MAG or HK21E would be my choice, though some Russian type would be good too(PK or so..).

I hate to say it but an M60 is still the most WIDELY USED Military Machine Gun right now, so it SHOULD be in the armoury, and one SAW is not a whole lot of choice, at least give us two, Now, some flaws with the M60 are: Slow ROF, it's not that fast, High Recoil, and also the need for a minimum crew of two.

If I had to guess, this title would belong to the FN GPMG used by the British, Israelis, US(M240, if that's the same) etc. But I'm not sure if this is always the same design..
Maybe some Russian model might fit in here too..

M60 too old? The M60 is derived from the WW2 German MG42, btw the West Germans just rechambered it for 7.62NATO and renamed it the MG3. There is a reason its still around and that is it works!

Recoil? Talk to someone thats fired an M60 and they'll tell you the recoil is simply not there. The recoil buffers take care of it. Anyone who tells you a M60 kicks is full of it. Don't believe me track some footage of the M60 being fired then find some of the old M14 and see which kicks more.

Gabriel: Actually the FN MAG in it's various forms is the most common military GPMG at the moment.

Umongst ex-soviet client states, the PKM is still the gun to beat.

I think having only one machine gun and about twenty pistols is a bit crazy, I'm sure there are still a lot of armies that use the M60 (and it looks good too :)), I think we should have at least two Machine Guns, one light, one medium. Hello...Ding dong, earth coming trough to GreyFox:) We already have full automatic rifles/submachine guns that fire even faster than the M60, and about the survival rate, we are getting the M249 right? I hear no one complaining about that one. Like I said, I think we should have an M60 after 3.0 is released. A mod can't be totally realistic. There has to be a fun factor, and I think an M60 would be totally fun to have :)

I think that INF is going for different kind of fun from games. INF is going for a simulation rather than a "game" game. And I see no problem with INF becoming less game-like to aim for realism:)

Hmm.. simple request, throw in a few inane responses, and now time for reality.

The reality of it is, the M60 is an outstanding medium machinegun. What people are afraid of is not being able to go down a corridor because it's protected by a hail of .308 bullets. Well guess what, THAT'S WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO! Machineguns occupy time and space (as my Drill Sgt used to say...), deny patches of land to the enemy. Another option than the 'tired old M60' would be the M240B, basically a SAW chambed in 7.62. The M240B is replacing the M60 in the US as our medium MG for the future. Or you could have the HK21E, or the FN MAG. Why not? It will add a tactical edge to things.

Now, the disadvantages to these sized weapons are numerous. Due to their weight, these weapons are very hard/impossible to shoulder and fire while standing. In fact, US Army doctirine states that the 'assault fire' (ie: on the move) position for the M60/M240B is from the hip, with your off-hand on top of the upper heat shield to keep the weapon from kicking uncontrolably. What this means is this: can not 'aim' in game without going in the prone. Another disadvantage, WEIGHT. There's a reason the heaviest guys get the Pig, it weighs in around 21lbs. unloaded. The M240B weighs 25lbs! Standard ammo for the MG is 10-100rnd belts, or 1000rnds! The ammo bearer carries 3000 in HIS pack as well as the assistant gunner carrying 3000. Ammo is obviously a concern here.

But all in all, I would LOVE to see the M60 in here, if just for nostalgia, not for the obvious tactical advantages and personal disadvantages.

Well, I'm not sure about this one, but isn't the M240 a FN MAG? If so it's not a MINIMI re-chambered but a much older design, if not forget that sentence..

Since I suppose most of you played the OFP demo, I guess a similar approach to LMGs in INF might be possible. You can't hit good while standing, but fire much more precise while prone. Also, IIRC, a member once suggested that it would take a few seconds to set up a fireing position with a LMG, which would then be 'fixed'(like the M2HB) and also take a few second to return to 'normal' mode(for running away..).
IMO this is a very good idea, since it would make the LMG harder to use, and also emphasis on team work, since one member could cover the LMG gunner.(No, I don't think this would be a boring task, since this man/woman would be responsible for the surviving of both teammembers..)
Ammo would be a problem too, though I suppose one can take ammo not fitting his weapon and then drop it - which is not possible at the moment.

BTW: HK21E, FN MAG or anything Russian, but please no M60..

Well, the M240B is -sort of- the FN MAG. It's been modified alot externally to fit US Army requirements. (one of which seems to be: make it heavy as a turd) The reason I said it's like the SAW is because, well, it is. Internally they're almost identical, which makes it easier to disassemble than the M60, but like I said, heavy as a turd.

As for 'setup times', yes, M240B's have them. By my best guess, it would take close to 3secs to drop prone and then prop open the bipod legs. As for making it a 'fixed position' that you can leave... I'm torn on that one. Often our M60's are calibrated to a point (ie road intersection) on the tripod and then grounded until the time comes to fire them. However, the M60 can also be carried in for an assault and constantly shuffled around where it is needed. Eh, maybe if you include a tripod mount option, which will make it sort of a 'deployable turret', or not to heft the bitch yourself.

BTW, '60 gunners CAN operate independantly. They will carry around 5000rnds and no tripod and are used mostly in cites and while assaulting/moving/scouting (hmm, sorta like most INF maps..) However his load weighs him down alot, and a '60 gunner without a spotter is far less effective at long range.

Wasn't the M240 used as tank MG until now. IIRC the M60A3, M1 Abrams and M2 Bradley used them as co-ax(the M1 even as AA for the gunner or so..).

About the 3 seconds time to set up a position: would sound about right for me - perhaps even a bit less (2 or 2.5 secs or so..) - it would put the gunner into a certain disadvantage compared to someone with an AR, but not too much a disadvantage - especially if the gunner is covered by another team member. This would provide a good teamgame enchanceing element to the game: a rather mobile team that can provide an area-effect suppressive fire for the rest of the team.

The tripod would be a little too much for me, since it would need rather three than two men, especially regarding the fact, that tripod mounted MGs usually stay in a certain position longer than a mobile team in an attack.

Though making a LMG rather a team weapon that way has mostly advantages for gameplay it has one serious disadvantage: playing with bots; as they behave now I suppose a human LMG gunner would rather be shot by his 'protector' than be supported(I've been shot many times by my own bots - perhaps they dislike my leading-style..) or the gunner would be unprotected..
Perhaps the team will have solved that problem with better bot code until the SAW is introduced..

Seals deploy with the M60E3 as an individually served weapon, with at least 2 per squad. The Rangers use the standard M60, and its also used singularly, though its important to note that they still have M249 gunners as well.

The SEALs use the weapon as its the smallest MG in 7.62 caliber. There are confirmed accounts of them carrying the HK 21E during the panama invasion as well.

And for those of you that think the E3 is a POS, I have video of SEALs firing full auto for 15 second with no problem, while comparativly, Ive seen footage of a HK21E jamming 3 times in about 100 rounds. I think people who have shot the weapon are better qualified to attest to their qualities rather than some DOD info page.

I know that 60 wont make INF, and youre just going to have to deal with it. I have concerns about even how the SAW will be implemented, but we shall see.

I have fired an M60, when it's on the TP and you're i the right position there is LITTLE kick, but if it's not on a TP and you're holding it it goes everywhere, it's too hard to control, It CANNOT be fired from the hip standing up, It is MUCH too heavy, and LCJr, Do I have to state that I grew up on a Naval Air Station comeplete with MG Firing range? I grew up with marines, I know aobut a good deal of American guns,

FabulousRex: If you're going to make a comparison, compare apples and apples. Such as the FN MAG 58 and the M60E3 directly. The M240B is designed up as a crew served weapon. The base FN-MAG is available as an individual weapon with a biood weighing about 10.5 kilos. The bipod CAN be left in open position and the weapon reportedly deploys faster than any M60 can manage.

Before being replaced by the L96A1 LSW, the L7 GPMG served as an individual weapon for the British infantry squad. Given it's excellent performance in the Falklands there is no reason to doubt it's effectiveness.
