I had following idea which would combine good with the improved sound-system:
Give the player the ability to make some noise by purpose eg. throwing a stone to draw the attention of another player to a certain point.
The implementing could be done like this:
Any player is equiped with unlimited small objects (representing stuff like stones, rubbish, piece of wood, empty can...depending on mapstyle). When throwing one of these objects, the impact should sound little similar to footsteps. This will make a hidden sniper think, someone is trying to gun him down from behind and will either make him leave the hideout or trying to face his chaser.
I know the impact of a stone does not exactly sound like a footstep in RL, but the problem is that real life has a much bigger variety of noises. The bang of a falling stone would make someone think, that there is something going on and that's just what is the purpose of the whole maneuver. Beeing able to distinguish clearly between 'someone is comming' and 'someone is trying to fool me' would make the whole thing pointless.
