Making things in a graphic transparent

Hey guys. I"m not new to this board, I was here under the name Alone and Easy Target i think or something... maybe it was hot-chix.net i can't remember.

Anyway, how do you guys make things transparent in an image!? Like, if i wanna make buttons in winamp transparent when i make skins, but I can't. I don't know how!

I use photoshop btw.

Crap, are you serious?

Cuz it's for my winamp skins and stuff. I wanna make the buttons transparent right, but they're all bitmaps!?

Can i just convert them back from .gif or .png to bitmap and still have the transparancy or anything?
