View Full Version : Substraction weirdness

Ok, I started on a small ctf level. I have a 2048x2048x1024 terrain brush on both sides of a chasm and a floating castle-type thing in the middle. Now, the terrain brushes serve as entrances to the bases - what you see standing in the middle of the map is a cliff face (on both sides) with an opening in it. The problem is, when I try to substract a simple cube under the terrain brush (an underground base - how original!) it just won't appear in the 3D view. It doesn't touch anything, it's way off the terrain brush (which I still think is somehow causing the problem) , yet there's just an invisible box. The substraction shows up in the 2d views and the outline can be seen in the 3d if the brush is selected.
I've tried duplicating the whole thing and moving it around, intersecting it all and moving to a different place and altering vertices of the terrain brush. nothing helps. if I substract the cube really far away from the rest of the level, it's ok (about 3000-4000 units). I wouldn't want to alter the whole plan for the map.

What do you mean you cant see it?
Does nothing at all happen or does it not work the way it is supposed to?
Try doing a Full rebuild.

The brush you are trying to subtract from...is it solid or semisolid? Brushes cannot be subtracted from semisolids. I'm not sure if this is what you need...

I'm trying to substract from unused space, not inside anything. The substract shows up in the 2d views, not in 3d (BUT the 3d outline shows up if I select the substracted brush from any of the 2d views). I've rebuilt several times, no use.
maybe i'll just scratch the whole thing...:(

OK, this may be a stupid question, but do you not see it at all or does it just keep away from the surface you want to subtract from?
Have you tried to right click on your subtracted brush and select something like Make Last? It's in there somewhere, but I don't know right now what the word is. You'll probably find it.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that:) Yes, right-click on the brush and select "order" then select "make last."

fuzzpilz, i don't see it at all - in the 3d view. no textures...it's a bit like when you add a masked decoration (like a chain for example) that's aligned so that none of the texture's visible part is to be seen. the object is there but hasn't got any visible textures; the 2d views show it normally, as any other brush.
i have to try that order thing...could someone clarify what it really does/affects? i haven't really got it, although i've read about using it before.

Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG - what unrealEd uses) relies on the ordering of brushes in that if you subtract a brush it will cut a piece out of whatever brushes are there *before* you subtracted. If you subtract a brush and *then* add one, the later addition will not be affected by the subtract because it was added afterwards.
Basically, your first brush is always a large subtract to make space for the adds etc.
If you have a subtract that was created before an add it will not affect it at all. This can be done inadvertently by using ctrl-w to duplicate a subtracted brush and then moving it to a later additive brush space.

let me get this straight...if i first substract a cube, then add a smaller cube inside it, then set the substract's order to last - would it 'clear' the added cube?
actually, this shouldn't really be related to my problem, because there isn't ANYTHING from where i'm trying to substract in the first place.

That's right - the added cube would be subtracted away by the (now) second brush.
See my 1st post then - send me the map and i can take a look :D
