Yes, I "kinda" fixed it.

I had actually forgot about it... then I was reading a thread where someone was bugging us GeForce users about using 16-bit... so I decided to go check and see exactly how much 32-bit hurts my framerate. But, I noticed that the RL altfire smoke didn't show green or have artifacts... same with the pulse rifle!!!

So, for some reason it's just in UT and only in 16-bit. It's the same in both D3D and OpenGL... 16-bit has those artifacts, and 32-bit is fine. So, since I still get 52.87fps (60.46 in 16-bit) on the intro, plus this, I think I'm going to stay with 32-bit now.

BTW, Elsa Tech support are a bunch of idiots, they just keep talking abuot Drivers, Drivers, Drivers... and something about not using an aperature over 64mb, but they never would explain why... so I'm sticking with 128.

Thanks for you input, and since you asked me to tell you if I got it fixed.. here it is. I never thought it would be something that simple though... it's still odd.

oh, and in case any of you don't remember the problem, here's some screens of what was happening:

From origional thread

Also note the F'd up pattern in the smoke

Green border around black from prolonged pulse rifle altfire exposure (wow, big words):

The pattern is here too

I'm glad to hear you figured something out. I'm wallowing in misery at the moment. See current post! I lost my system and my new one isn't running UT. : ( Haven't figured that out yet.

About your green though.. as odd as it is the only thing I can think of that even remotely resembles an explanation is that perhaps when they programmed the 16-bit color registers they excluded some of the grayscale and it shows up as green. Or perhaps there was an error in identifying the appropriate grayscale color which would likely be used in the smoke so it registers as a blend of green instead. I dunno.. as you say it's really weird. Would be nice to have one of the programmers actually read the thread and give us a real reason why though.

Take care,
