View Full Version : Rooster's farewell address... (kinda)

11th Oct 2000, 11:27 PM
Hi guys, long time no see.

Well, a lot of stuff has happened in the last few weeks. I've not been around for a while, yall know that. I let PuF take over my time at work. Well, when someone spends all day posting an average of 23 posts a day for 7 or 8 months, it gets noticed. While yall know I'm the Network Administrator at my place of work, we're a remote office. Well, it seems they started monitoring the firewall traffic and found I was spending a rather inordinate amount of time on non-work related sites.

Guilty as charged. For someone who's job it is to watch over other's access, this was pretty stupid of me.

Well, thank god my direct boss is a good man. He went to bat for me with the home office (they wanted me fired). After that we talked it over and I told him it would stop right away, never to happen again. I told him he wouldn't regret it. And as yall know, I'm a man of my word.

That explains my time away from the PuF family. This doesn't mean I'll be around any more than I have been the last 2+ weeks, just felt I owed yall an explanation.

Lately, things have changed on the |C|ondemned side of life. I seem to have let Unreal Tournament get in the way of spending time with my kids (Ali, Serena, Michael). Recently (last 3 weeks or so), |C|ondemned reached #1 on Teamplay and Proving Grounds, as well as #5 on OGL. We accomplished far more than any of us really dared to dream. I guess after reaching the "peak" I was able to look back at how I got there. I found that my 3 year old barely knows how to count to 20 and doesn't know her ABC's. And my 20 month old, while he has a good comprehension level, he doesn't talk nearly as well as I think he should. Not what I expected to see upon reaching such a "proud" point.

So, I've removed myself from the Proving Grounds 1v1 DM ladder where I was #2 (XS|Pain took me out hard!) and from the 1v1 RA ladder where I was #1 and undefeated. I've removed myself from active status with |C|ondemned possibly only to play emergency backup for the occasional match. They want me to stick around, but most likely for the server. ;)

I hope I've not lost too much time from my children's formative years. I can only hope I'm not too late to be the father they need me to be. As a friend of mine said.Your family needs you more than we do, so please tend to them and integrate yourself as a father, not as a gamer with the occassional "role model" skits.I think he hit it on the head (this was in response to my "semi-retirement" post in our private forum).

To their credit, all of |C| has been supportive of this decision. For that, I wish to publicly thank them. Not a single one took a negative attitude about this.

I just wanted to say thanks to all of yall, and everyone in |C|ondemned, for making my UT ride a fun one. Without PuF & |C|, UT would have been just another game. I'll stop by from time to time, but if you wanna say "hi", just drop me an e-mail. :)

For those of you who made it this far, I'm impressed. :)

Good night "yall". :D

11th Oct 2000, 11:39 PM
Okay kids, LiquiD_SiN's word of the day is "moderation" Can you say that? Good I knew you could do it!

Hehe well good luck with what ya got going Roo :) See ya around :)

After 4000 some odd posts, most of which were helpful and informative, you don't need to be apologizing to anyone. I haven't known you all that long but from the time that I have you've been a great help, and understanding of all that have ever asked anything of you.

If real life beckons, and you feel you need to spend more time with your children then by all means, do so. I agree with your decision whole-heartedly and hope to see you around when you do have a few extra minutes. But if I don't, good luck to you, and thanks for being here for me and everyone else. :)

11th Oct 2000, 11:42 PM
Take care Roost. You're a stand up guy. People like you always land on their feet.

11th Oct 2000, 11:43 PM
I wish that I was able to get to know you better Rooster, but i justt wanted to say that you are a good man for making this decision. Nothing can be as important as family. Good luck, God Bless and take care!

11th Oct 2000, 11:44 PM
You got me choked up hear, seriously. I have also let UT take over my life and have left little time for my family, friends, and school. I know its a tough decision to walk away from the game, but you did the right thing. I'm just some punk kid, but you are a father and that is far more important than any game. On behalf of BHS I would just like to say how much we are going to miss playing with you over at PG. You were part of some of our most memorable games. Thanks for everything(including the server)!

11th Oct 2000, 11:47 PM
Go be a father, oh Captain, my Captain.

...waiting for the day when Rooster Jr. kicks my a$$ in UT VII

11th Oct 2000, 11:47 PM
Even though I'm disappointed that you have to go, I support your decision to put family first.

We've played some good games, and we've had some good talks. Whether it be helping organize the PuF vs OzUT match, or deciding what kind of computer I should look for, it was always my pleasure to hear your advice.

I remember playing against you in February and March and looking up admirably at your status as a great UT player. You were the single most driving force in helping me become a good UT player.

Specifically, I remember our 1 vs 1s on Turbine and Codex, two memorable games, not because of their scores (I lost 10-9 on Turbine and lost by 20 or 30 frags on Codex), but because you told me I was on the brink of breaking through as a strong player.

Anyways, it's been a real pleasure playing with you.

Have fun, and have a happy post-UT life.

11th Oct 2000, 11:49 PM
Well Roo, it's been a fun time man! I enjoyed getting whooped by you all the time, and I enjoyed chatting/posting with ya on PuF.

I believe you made the best decision in the matter. Family is infinitely more important than some stupid game! Teach those ABC's and 1-2-3's!! And please don't lose you're job man! (then we would lose the Roost!!! *rofl*)

J, you are a good man and you have nothing to apologize for! You have offered more help here than most of us probably will in the next 20 years :D Please know that your contributions to this community (and outside) are appreciated!

Take care of yourself and hopefully you might find time for a game or two every once in a while!

Good luck in the future bro :)

11th Oct 2000, 11:49 PM
I applaud your Decision Roo. We are a community and we must support each other. I thought you only had 1 kid. But, 3 is definitely more than enough to keep you busy. My sister has a 17 month old daughter and she's more than enough. Your family does need you and I think everything else should be secondary.

We'll definitely miss you.

Hope you stop by now and then. I shall take note of 4329. :D

11th Oct 2000, 11:49 PM
hey man, refocus away, kids are definitely more important than getting your ass kicked.. I mean playing UT :)

seriously though, they are young. they sleep early. you have plenty of opportunity to play should you decide it's still something you wish to do man... and I hope this isn't the last we'll see of ya. until next time man!

11th Oct 2000, 11:59 PM
/me vows to always delete PuF entries from firewall logs

12th Oct 2000, 12:03 AM
Roo.... you were the first person to respond to my first post on PuF and thru all the past months I've gotten to know ya, you've always been the voice of reason, a fair and really cool person, a great moderator, and a great UT player. You'll be missed for sure.... your family is richer for our loss or something like that :) Hope to still see ya from time to time around the place, we'll keep a spot on the couch reserved for you here at PuF.

12th Oct 2000, 12:38 AM
We'll all be sorry to see you go Roo and you'll surely be missed. Playing with a clan takes lots of time and so does playing on lots of ladders so I understand the need to leave, especially when you have kids. You can come back to UT when you've retired and the young whippersnappers have faster reflexes than you, but you can still be the voice of reason. ;) Thanks for being around and making PuF a better place.

12th Oct 2000, 12:38 AM
Well Rooster it's been a blast playing side by side with you. Hope we can still get some games in if you have some spare time. Kids can be a handful but I think your kids are going to be just fine.

I hate to see you go just as much as I hated seeing DragonAsh leave us. He was always kool with me and always will be. UT would be just a game that I would have stopped playing if it werent for people like you Rooster.

Make sure you keep in touch, I'm thinking of upgrading my processor/motherboard soon and I might need some advice. So don't wander off too far.

When I think of all the fun I had playing UT I think of a few people/groups.
|C| - A great clan with great players and great people
PuF - Cause everyone is so damn kool and I never get bored hanging out with you guys.
MyUnreal - The reason I started playing CTF and the reason I kept playing UT when I was ready to give it up.
Jenny - She made UT the funniest thing in the world. Potshots wouldn't be Potshots without her. (We've got plans for Potshots ;) doin it for the love of email)
Wesly - This guy just kicks ass!

Well the list could go on and on but this post isnt about me =)

Anyway, Rooster keep in touch and hopefully you can sneak in some UT time soon.

12th Oct 2000, 12:59 AM
There's not much more to say then has laready been said.
You definately made the right choice. Enjoy time with your kids now before they grow up and go away to college or something.
Thank you for all the time you put into PuF. We will miss you.

12th Oct 2000, 01:17 AM
Sorry to here that man.
I think once Tribes 2 comes out, |C|'s energy will be revitalized.

Untill then, rest up Roo :)

12th Oct 2000, 01:30 AM

Your level of involvement and your attitude within the Unreal Tournament community has been phenomenal. Your contributions will never be forgotten.

I remember during the first week that PG launched, how eager Rooster was to get involved and how encouraging him and his team have been to us since then.

Glad to hear you're getting things straightened out at work and at home. Take it easy, but don't be a stranger. :)

12th Oct 2000, 01:41 AM
To give up on everything you have achieved was brave, but it was the right thing to do. You have help PuF be the thing that it is, and we all thank you for it.

Good luck m8 :)

12th Oct 2000, 02:14 AM
The way you moderated this forum was one of the main reasons why I made PuF my home forum. The helping hands and UT knowledge that you find on PuF was another; and much of that was/is you.

Although your decission hurts for us and we hate to see you go, we all know it's the right thing to do. I wish you all the best for your future.

(Hmmm .... it should teach me a lesson. Posting on forums during the day is having quite an obvious negative impact on my work lately.=/)

12th Oct 2000, 02:21 AM
Well, Rooster...I think it's obvious that in you've touched a lot of people, who you never really met, in many positive ways. We'll all miss ya, but like Binary said: Don't be a stranger. I'm sure once you're back into taking a more active role in real life, you'll find time for the occasional game/post/chat with us. Hopefully you won't spend all of it with |C|ondemned and you'll share a little with the rest of us ;) You may leave, but your spirit lives on! :D

/me hopes his work never starts monitoring traffic...

12th Oct 2000, 02:41 AM
The most have been said.
Enjoy your life, take care of your family and don't forget us.

12th Oct 2000, 03:17 AM
Wow, I log on for the first time tonight and this is what I see? Whoa ... this was like a big news story breaking.

I lurked in these forums for long before I ever acutally posted ... and obviously you were (and still are) Mr. PuF. One night I was playing at JamisonGold and you, among other people who I don't recall, joined the game. I was like "Whoa, this guy is famous!" So I asked you if you were "The" Rooster and you said "The one from PuF" and I was thinking it was so cool. I told my buddy I was playing with "Rooster is famous!" He thought it was hilarious that someone could be famous simply by playing UT(he'd never heard of you) but I thought it was pretty neato. I then typed "Nice to meet you. Now I must kill you" and the rest is history. Or something.

Anyway ... the preceding anecdote was meant to point out how much of an impact you had on the community as a whole. Whether it's being "Mr. PuF" or running The Roost ... you made your mark. And in a good way.

Good luck ... I think we all agree you've made the right decision. Whenever you'd like, meet me on Lava Giant, grab the flag, and I'll steal the armor from you :)

12th Oct 2000, 06:36 AM
You've left your mark mate, from whichever angle you look at this community. Thx for being such a good sport and a good inspiration for newcomers. Unfortunately this day has only 24h in it and 3 kids need quite a big portion of that.

See you around.

12th Oct 2000, 06:50 AM

I (and probably everyone on this forum) considered Rooster as the king of this forum.........The news of you leaving here had the impact of an amplified redeemer. Of course,I also think you made the right decision.

May the ping be with you!

P.S. What's gonna happen to your server........?

12th Oct 2000, 07:38 AM
Hey, even though i only played you once and only know you little, i'm sure PuF is loosing a great leader figure.

Best wishes... good luck, Rooster!

Teach your children, do your work, and be ready to come back to PuF in about 30 years, when we are old, gray men, so we can play a little UT (UT XXV, patch 25.15)...

Or, to say it in one "word", man:

[really big]SNIFF.....[/really big]

12th Oct 2000, 09:53 AM
If anyone responds negatively and selfishly to your very responsible decision, they should be banned from PuF.

I (a father) wholy understand and support your decision, I actually applaud you. There are reasons unknown why we play this game (my wife doesn't understand, and I can't explain), it eventually becomes a part of us.

Rooster! thanks a ton for helping WAY WAY more than anyone ever should have to get my server up and playable. As long as PuF the Magic Dragon is administered by me, your name will always appear in the MOTD.

heed the call....

12th Oct 2000, 10:03 AM
Sorry to see you go Roo, dont worry, in 10 years time when the kids have grown up a bit, we can all get togethor for a PuF reunion in UT4 or Q8A =D

/me waves good bye, to the man of PuF

12th Oct 2000, 10:17 AM
Everything has pretty much been said, so I'll just add my name to the list of farewells :).

12th Oct 2000, 10:18 AM
Who's going to turn round when UT v4xx comes out and say "It works fine for me ... must be your computer"!?!?!?!:D

Thanks for helping to make PuF become something more than just another forum.

You will be missed.

12th Oct 2000, 10:58 AM
"Rooster is famous" That is great.

Hate to see on of the 2nd gen leave but you cant lose a job and comprimise your family for a game. Just goes to show how damned addictive this game can get. UT:Crack Edition, lol.

Good Luck Rooster!!

12th Oct 2000, 11:00 AM
Rooster - just a few words:
THANK YOU

You don't know many of us individually, but I'm sure there's hundreds of us that feel we know you from your participation and contributions to the Unreal community. Both your knowledge, skill, and especially character are much greater than any of us could ever explain in words.

Leave us knowing that we thank you for what you've done, and we truly support your intelligent and mature decision. I think I speak for everyone when I say:

You are always welcome, friend.

/me salutes a great leader.

We'll be honored to have you visit again. Take care and best wishes...

12th Oct 2000, 11:38 AM
Blah blah blah...bye!

Every one of us who was around in the first few weeks that PuF was beginning, and has known Rooster since will miss you. See ya R. Come around at least occasionally, and bring the kids. :)

12th Oct 2000, 12:06 PM
/me hugs Roo tightly. I miss you already hon. I take it as a singular honor to have known you within this community and I understand your struggle. Your presence will be sorely missed but you will not be forgotten. Legends never die.

Good choice man. Family and real life always come before games, even though the community here sometimes seems like a family. I hope everyone respects you for your decision and that you are happier with spending more time with your family.

Good games Rooster, and thanks for letting us use your server oh so many times! :)

Farewell. :(

12th Oct 2000, 01:34 PM
Use the "Search Forums" option.

Works fine for me, must be your system.

well, someone's gonna have to say this stuff now...

with everything Rooster. It is sad to see you go but you made the right decision. One any of us would have made in your position.

Good Bye Rooster.

This game was a major entertainment venue/hobby/escape for me since the Unreal days. Some people watch TV, I like to play UT.

I came to these boards looking for a way to get up onto the cliffs in Lava. (whadda noob) Your advice, hints, help and attitude made me a better player (Yeah, that's not saying much ;)) and helped me get more out of what is my personal entertainment. I hope that I can take the things I've learned from you and pass them on to others. The PuF I sport on my online name is in large part because of the attitude you've put forth on these forums.

Your family and job come first. You will get out of them what you put into them. I'm glad you've realized this before they were seriously jeopardized.

You're already missed.

Best wishes in the real world.

Lance "Morety" Moreton

12th Oct 2000, 03:14 PM
/me salutes the Rooster.

Untill we meet Again.

12th Oct 2000, 04:04 PM
Well, nothing more to say here, told ya everythingin ICQ.

12th Oct 2000, 04:04 PM
Thanks for everything. You are and will remain a big part of the UT community regardless of your future post count:) Best of luck.

A gentle breeze flows across the meadow
Flowers awake to the morning sun
Life abounds and hugs the glow
Rejoicing,flowers sway in song

Night silently falls onto the land
darkness warns and the flowers sleep
Rejoice they will and know they can
For the sun again, the flowers will see

God bless Rooster...we all love you.

12th Oct 2000, 04:24 PM
I'll never forget you man,

I'll never forget what you did for me, you were like a teacher to me. I enjoyed every game I got to play with you, and wished I might have gotten a couple more in. Your one no one will forget. This is the 2nd time that someone on a forum that is well known has left for a certain reason, but I guarantee you will be back, and when you do your spot will be there, for now it is empty and deserted...

Take care roo, good luck!

12th Oct 2000, 04:33 PM
we coulda at least played our game man... heheh j/k... :D

in all seriousness you were one of the pillars of the community... and going by the number of posts in this thread you are already missed...

it's been almost a year since the game has been out... so it's not surprising seeing the amount of ppl leaving... to have enough free time and the passion to play over the course of a year to play a game is pretty rare... i'm lucky that i started late

gl with everything.. pop ur in head in #pu once in awhile ;)

12th Oct 2000, 05:13 PM
El Roostre,I am not going to read 4 pages of posts, but I will let you know that I am sure everyone supports you,and you have been a good teacher/helper to alot of us here.
Whatever you decide is best for your family has to be priority over everything (yes...even UT).Good luck in the future. And thanx for the help you have given me in the past. :)

12th Oct 2000, 09:25 PM
Take care Rooster!! I am fully behind ya on this one!! You need to place family and work before the game!! We will miss you but you are doing the right thing!!

We at 950 have had some members taking time off also to spend time with family and loved-ones!! We whole-heartly back them on their choice!!

We all have to reflect at times and make sure that we don't get to hooked on the digital crack!! :D

13th Oct 2000, 12:28 AM
bye.. kinda.. i dont know if you remember me.. but bye kinda =)

13th Oct 2000, 01:24 AM
I think that it is somewhat fitting that a m0 who is spamming every post and especially this one, has the status that he does.

Rooster, what can i say? You know you've made the right decisions, and you know that we will all miss you.

So instead:

I remember the first time I logged on #pu after hearing about it in here...and there was nobody there. shrug. But the second time, you were there, along with a few others, and i thought, 'OMG it's THE ROOSTER!' (I guess that kinda makes me sound like a newbie pornstar or something)...but i think everyone was in a game, so i said something lame and then left (i always wonder if you saw/remember that and thought WTF?) And then one time....one time.... i had the honor of being asked to join a game on your team! (ok, so you guys were simply short a player...we all see things differently=) On Hydro16...you finally showed me where the damn shield was... and entrusted Def to me! (that might not have been such a good call;) )

You did a lot for us, and for those of us who joined earlier your presence went a long ways towards making UT fun and PuF a great community.

I think I will make a godlike Bot named rooster with all skills dialed up and stuff. But skin/face would you like?

13th Oct 2000, 02:56 AM
Family comes first. We all know that. We'll miss ya, Rooster!

13th Oct 2000, 03:10 AM
Roo...although there isn't much more to say, I'll try my best :)

You helped me a few times with computer questions and i also valued your opinion very much on them. I also enjoyed the conversations we had...especially those lil Mac vs PC debates in my first ever thread posted ;)

We all understand (well hopefully anyways) that family comes first and I stand behind your decision all the way. I wish the best of luck to you and your family...stop my often as possible though man...you'll always be welcome :)

13th Oct 2000, 07:30 AM
Sorry to hear about the crap Roost.

Real life has to take priority over UT. Having a family must be one of the best privledges ever :)

You've been an online inspiration ever since I've been browsing this forum (new year-ish).

Good luck in whatever :)

13th Oct 2000, 07:38 AM
Sad to see you go, but as a daddy to be I fully support your decision.

You know I remember when I started playing here I used to hear about this Rooster guy and I decided to investigate the person that was so godlike to everyone. I rememeber playing a Face match one day and I say a Rooster join the game, my first instinct was "WOW here is that dude everyone talks about!!!" I remember playing my heart out in that game because I wanted to do good for you. Then I come back here and in my first post I say good job to you in and it was a pleasure to finally play with you. BUT to my disapointment I found out that I had the wrong guy =(

My point of all this was to let you know that you are an important figure in the UT community and your words, wisdom and kindness will be missed.

I know is sounds corny but if I could have a role model for UT it your be You.

GL with the family.

13th Oct 2000, 12:16 PM
i am what as known as a "computer widow." comparable to a sports widow, i too have had to repeat questions to my gaming husband at least three times to illicit a response whenever he is preoccupied with his UT. i have learned to deal with it. upon the birth of our daughter, known as "princess," i have seen a remarkable change in the man formerly known as the "gaming junkie." he plays with our daughter all the time and has become a wonderful and loving father, and in turn, a more attentive husband. he still games, but around the family schedule now. i congratulate rooster for seeing within himself the changes he needed to make, as i am certain the realization was a difficult and eye-opening experience. you are not alone, rooster, and wives and children everywhere appreciate your desire to refocus your energies on your family.

13th Oct 2000, 12:41 PM
Hey Roo...thanks for all the help you offered up to me about hosting a UT server, as well as the countless other questions that you answered that I'm just too dumb to recall at this time :) Take care man, and don't be a stranger.

Can one of the admins set Rooster's post count to something obscene...like 4 trillion, to keep all the post hounds from going after that number 1 spot? ;)

13th Oct 2000, 12:42 PM
Damn Rooster :(

You were one of the guys who made PuF fun. Thx Birdy, and good luck with yer life :)

13th Oct 2000, 01:44 PM
Rooster...You've always been cool to me. In my first post, I started shouting about something stupid, and you told me to just to mellow out. You didn't jump on my case or anything. You welcomed me here.

And now....Rooster is not DEAD! He is not dying. He's not even gone. I saw that he made a post yesterday...10/12/2000

So he's not gonna post much! It's not a big deal. I think a lot of us waste quite a bit of time here. Maybe more than we should.

Whatever you do you do Rooster, I hope your well. And I hope to see you on the servers.

13th Oct 2000, 03:05 PM
You are a good man, Rooster. I have definitely been missing the hell out of you these last few weeks. But I always trusted that you had a good reason. You got my support cowboy.

Thanks for all the help, tips, encouragement, etc.

If you do get time to play a game now and then, please log on #PU first so I can follow you in and spec. I learned alot when I did that a few weeks ago.

Yeah, I come to spec the Rooster... OH YEAH!

Good luck with all.

15th Oct 2000, 08:49 PM
I've been gone a week and come back looking through the old threads I missed while vacationing and the inevitable has happened. I know everyone has missed you around here, Roo. You're quite the helpful fellow.

Because you're semi-leaving doesn't mean we don't expect the occasional "hi" or "search the forums" from you!

I remember when you came to the forum. I could tell that you were someone who was going to learn and do everything that UT entailed. ...and quickly! You did.

Alas, RealLife has kicked in, as it does to us all (I in particular know your dilemna) and the best decision has been made. Congrats on that, bro. If you're half as good with your family as you are at everything else I've seen you do (as I suspect you are), I know that everything will work itself out (as it seems to be).

You're a stand-up, respectable guy and this forum is a good deal diminished without someone like you around.

g/l...pay us a visit.

16th Oct 2000, 01:46 AM
I haven't stopped by for a while (a long while). Rooster was one of the best, if not the best, people I ever played with. He's been a fixture on this forum for a very long time, and has been great a source of information for a vast number of people. Us Pufs can live without out you, but your kids need you. Kudo's for doing the right thing, and best of luck.

P.S. The reason I haven't been around is that I moved to remote location, and my ping is terrible. However, it seems that DSL is coming I'll be back to getting fragged real soon :)

16th Oct 2000, 01:58 AM
Hey Rooster,

This thread reads like a transcript at a testimonial dinner. :)

We really don't know each other, but I've always thought you were ok. And now that you have readjusted your priorities, I think you are even better. Nice. Life first.

And people, honestly (this has been said), if you think he was good for you, just imagine how good he will be for his family and personal friends now. :)

Talk to you later Rooster.
