I have been mostly an offline player until I had a cable modem brought in a few months ago. When playing a few times, I noticed on some servers, the other players seemed to 'skate' around instead of walking or running. Anyone know what the hell this is?
Second, I see alot of players that seem to 'skip' through the air, disappear and then reappear like 10 feet in front of them from where they were. I didn't notice any relics in the game and this gets annoying to me when I go to nail someone with a rocket and they are on top of me within a second or two.
Just wondering...

a lot of that can be attributed to lag and packet loss.

Packet Loss seems to me to be the most likely suspect. I've heard a lot of other cable users complaining about packet loss as well, which is why I don't intend on getting it. :) I'll just wait for DSL... *whistles*

the problem with cable is that if there are a ****load of users in your area, you probably won't get the great connection you hoped for. however, if no one is in the area, your connection may be damn sweet. dsl is definitely the way to go i'd say.

for the disappearing - reappearing part it's probably the translocater. (just in case your not joking).

I've seen the skating around effect a few times. It usally happens if I wander onto a european server,(I'm in the UK). I think it has something to do with their servers begin config'ed differently, I find that none of my key binds work, and even my voice has changed.

skating around is probably caused by lag.
Your voice changing is cuz your using a voice that the server doesn't have installed, so it reverts back to a default voice (male2 for the soldier model, male 1 for the commando model & the same is true for the female voices also)

Packet loss?? Maybe. However the only time I've ever seen it was when I tried using UT patch 428. It hasn't happened to me any other time regardless of what my settings were or whether or not I was using D3D or OpenGL.

I see the skating effect on most 428 servers, regardless of my pl.

Great, thanks all. I figured it had to be something like that. But, I really cannot blame packetloss seeing how I play mostly late at night, like 1 or 2 AM my time, so seeing how cable modems are LAN's, I don't think that many people would be on.

I alway use the standard male2 voice. I've come onto servers based in other countries and everythings been changed around, like my voice is now female etc. Most of my key binds don't work, and the ones I'd set up in the Speach binder have changed, like I could have ']' set to the laugh, but suddenly I get a woman voice saying "Sorry did I blow your head apart?"
The skating effect on these servers that I've seen isn't like packet loss coz it continues through the entire game. Its like the animations are disabled on the players, and there all just frozen in one pose, and move around like that. It looks quite spooky really.
