More bad news for UK Internet......

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

One of the only ISP's still doing 24/7 flat rate, Freeserve, have just terminated the accounts of the most active users. 2 of those users being me and fellow PuF Neo_Skinz. In typical UK fashion, you pay for 24/7 internet, and you get kicked for using it too much, wtf?!?!?

What a joke, the deal is called Freeserve: Unlimited time, and people are getting kicked for using it for more time than they want?

This is it, as far as I can see, UK Internet is totally fúcked up.

Oh, and add to this, the ISP has a 2 hour diss, and you spend half your time trying to dial into the service.

Heres a copy of the email sent by Freeserve to those who are having their accounts teminated.

Subject: Important message re: your Unlimited Freeserve Time connection

Dear Freeserve member,

As part of our commitment to deliver a high level of service to all our
members we continually monitor the network performance and usage. We have
identified that a very small percentage of our members (less than 1%) are
using the network for an average of nearly 17 hours each day, everyday.

The affect of this abnormal usage is that network performance suffers for
the majority of Freeserve members which is not acceptable.

We have identified that your Unlimited Freeserve Time usage is in this
category. As a result, and in accordance with Clause 3.1 of our Terms and
Conditions, from 6 November 2000 your Unlimited Freeserve Time account will
be terminated. You will however, be able to continue to use Freeserve with
the standard Freeserve `No Ties' connection where phone calls are charged
per minute.

For those Freeserve members who need to use the Internet for a significant
amount of time the new home user High Speed service from Freeserve would be
more suitable. The service offers high-speed, `always on' Internet access,
all for a flat fee of 39.99 per month. Please visit http://www.freeserve.com/plus
to find out more about this service.

You can contact us by email at time-enquiries@freeserve.com or telephone us
on 0845 0700066 between 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday.

Yours sincerely,

Victoria Robertshaw
Customer Management Director
You would think that Unlimited would mean that you can use as much as you like!
I believe that Freeserve just cant handle the demand for their service and instead of upgrading their crappy equipment they decide to just cut of their customers instead! Its fucking bullshit!!!

UK'ers get the shaft yet again.

It's not only the UK, but also Germany!

At least 5 flatrate providers here terminated all acounts in the last months and some even went bankrupt!

They underestimated the time their users stayed online, as they calculated with 3 hours a day (which is ridiculous). Otherwise the make losses with this user. And to be honest I can understand it.

I'm lucky and chose one of last big provider with a flatrate service! But like the things look, I'll sooner or later get my account terminated as well. :(

That's really bad for you. Sorry!

Write to the newspapers. You could cause a big stir over it. If only it was America, then it would be a legal battle just waiting to happen.

I am English, in Switzerland. Let's hope that Sunrise doesn't catch onto me...

In holland we don't have flat-rate providers, but I as far as I can see their behavior is quite rude. Is there a possibility for you guys to take legal action ?
About the other deal they offer you, is that some sort of dsl deal?

The other deal is an ADSL offer. What they dont say is that ADSL hasnt been set up yet (Bt havent enabled the exchanges). Even by the end of 2002, only 70% of Uk will be covered by ADSL, and Bt probably wont even get that much covered....

World Online refused to give me any free connection time on their "24/7 freedom" service.
It would have been nicer if they had told me before charging me £100 in prime time internet calls.

Out here in East Anglia they don't even have cars and TV's let alone broadband. The timeline for ADSL installation here actually takes into account the lifespan of all 200,000 Norwich residents. Sequentially.

There is another option - a Sattelite (sp?) connection. Go to http://www.europeonline.com for more info. Basically you have to fork out quite a lot for a PCI Sattelite card and an analogue sat. dish. Then you pay around a tenner a month (yes, it is dialup) for a 2mpbs dialup connection. Because it's sattelite its available everywhere in the UK and northern europe.

I can't get cable here, so I'm stuck with freeserve. When I can get on. I can't wait for NTL to cable my village.
BTW, I live in Nottingham, England

Which is exactly the reason why I wonder if legal action is possible.

in the us, i'm SURE you could sue them for false advertizing. even if they have it in their user agreement that they have the right to terminate you, they CAN'T put "unlimited" and "24/7" in their ads if they're not really offering it.

Why are you blaming your ISPs for this mess.
This major fu<k up was brought to you courtesy of BT.

You see, your ISP charges you at a fixed rate, but since they are using the BT network, BT in turn charge them for each and every call you make. Your ISP hopes that all of their average user call charges will be less than the ISPs service charge... (advertising aside, this is how they make their profit). However, Oftel were to force BT to charge all ISPs an annual fee for the use of their telecommunication network regardless of the amount of calls that are made. With this unmetered retail on our ISPs they would have been able to continue the free services. However, those greedy sh1t for brains at BT have found a way to swindle Oftel and delay the annual retail charge for at least another 6 months thereby knocking out an estimated 30% of their competition.

Most ISPs did see this coming and introduced measures into their TOS agreements which means that you can't take legal action against them as far as I know.

The bottom line is that your ISPs are not to blame.... the greedy fu<k faces at BT are completely to blame continuing to hold 60million of us to ransom.
