too many brushes ? is there a setting ? GPF

I am working on a map that has reached 1700 brushes. The editor won't compile. Crashes big time. If I delete *anything* to 16-- it compiles fine. The machine is a 450 P3 and has 384 RAM with 3+ Gig left on the hard drive. I am stopped ! This is my first map - a little too aggressive perhaps. Can anyone help me. d:-/ (please)

There shouldn't really be a problem with that many brushes.
Try on the build dialog, moving the first slider all the way to the right (-> balance tree) and rebuilding. I think it just needs to get its bsp tree sorted out once and then it will be ok. Doing this has worked more than once for me :)
