well, being a musician, i can't be havin me no carpool tunnel, so i've been forced to become joystick boy - and i'm a complete spaz with it. i still use trackball for aiming, but have the stick in the left hand for movement and such.

so if you're the flag carrier, and you see me whiz by glowing like a janitor at 3 mile island on "going out of business day" with the sheild belt on, then grab the armor leaving you with only 3 points of health, don't get mad. i'm probably just frantically trying to figure out which button switches to the asmd, so i can accidentally combo you into the lava!

[obligatory sexual innuendo]
now i need jenny? to come show me some joystick tips, specifically that yanking thing she does for "dodging".
[\obligatory sexual innuendo]

also, i know that the name {aPAIRof}TITTIES is one that strikes fear into the heart of many a UT enemy, so, in an effort to not sully that name, i shall switch to my new title untill such time as i am back to my normal level of poor play -

i am sincerely,

"Codpiece the Great"

Hey...I saw you in a game the other night as Codpiece the Great! Haha..I was LMAO at that name too..it's a good one :)

As for the Joystick thing..I've given it a shot, and actually, I think it would really improve my game if I actually practiced it. Only problem is, I had jump bound to a joystick button, and I found that I couldn't combine a joystick and mouse button being pressed at the same time. ie. I tried to hold down leftmouse to load rockets, and found that I couldn't jump while doing it :/ So I gave up on it, even though I bought a cool reversable joystick so I could use it in my left hand. Phooey.

yeah, i caught that little dig there J.

due to years of neglect (read marriage), a significant amount of rust has developed. i'd budget for more than "a few" minutes, if for nothing more than the minimum 10 minute pregame show just to get things started.

crusher,
what kind of stick were you using?
mine is the usb cyborg (saitek) and i've got jump on the stick and fire on the trackball, and don't have the trouble you had.

strange.

i do like the way the functions lay out on the stick. the only real drawback i can see is dodging. right now, i'm using the rudder (twisty) function as dodge, only , the stick has to be centered for it to work, which is not quite as fast as the key tap.

oh and by the way, i was using the stick last night too.
otherwise i would have killed you one out of 50 times instead of zero :)

Morety,
you never let me down.
i keep settin ya up,
and you keep knockin em out of the park.

by the way, i like the way you decided to pass on "the twisty function" and "only works if the stick is centered".

it's below an artiste of your calibre to go for the easy kill.

excellent work.

lunch: I think I have the cyborg also. Is it the one that comes with the little hex-tool so you can tweak the hell outta it? If so, that's what I got. And I'm using an MS Intellimouse as my other controller. Maybe I need to enable/disable direct input, or some other funky thing like that? I dunno...but that's what I noticed. I'd be running around Deck loading rockets, and I couldn't jump with the primary trigger.

And I also initially set the Hat to be movement so I could dodge..I was hoping to be able to double tap it while moving in a direction, but alas, as you found, I couldn't. :( So I just disabled that and was using the stick to dodge...my biggest problem was that it would dodge all the time! I'd just be trying to move around and it kept dodging me..maybe I need to set the dead zone on it to be smaller. Well, if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can solve this funky multi-keypress issue, I'd be most appreciative, as I still think the Joystick-Mouse combo has a lot of potential.

crusher,

yeah, that's the same one i've got.

i have found a solution to the dodge problem. and it works great, and kind of doesn't.

you have to use banded mode in the sge software so that the stick transmits wasd (or whatever your movement keys are set to) plus disabe the xaxis and yaxis setting in the user ini. of ut, then for the dodge, program a macro that begins with a release of the strafe key, then a repeated double tap of the same key.

voila, one button (twist) dodgeing whilest on the move. but still with the applicable delay (no cheating arguments please).
an added benefit is that you can hard code the delay time in between keypresses to be something smallish like .12 ms , then set that as your dodgetime in ut, thus reducing the unintentional dodge.

the only problem is when you try to use it on a server that's giving you a high ping. for whatever reason, the ever so slight delay time between the sticks software and the actual event on the server, starts to get kind of jerky and just overall funky. (pings 300 and up)

as it stands now, i use the analoge mode on the stick (much smoother) with the one twist dodge macro. i just have to practice quickly centering the stick for the dodge.

on a low ping server though, the previous setup is pretty killer.

let me know if you have any more questions, or want me to send you my sge profile.

one other cool thing, it's got keyholes on the bottom for suction cups. so you can suction it to your lap.

now, after all these years of speculation and curiosity, i can finally know what it feels like to be the man with a hat switch on his weener.

if you're like me, and i know you are, this feature is a sure fire deal maker.

Hmm...you got software with yours?? I don't think I even got a disk...my setup instructions just said to create a custom joystick setting. If you could tell me where I might get said software, that'd be sweet (this may be my problem). And yeah, I'd like to see that config file too...assuming I can find the software it configures :)

And I dunno bout you..but I don't think I could get anything to suction to my lap. I'd either have to be wearing rubber pants, or shave my legs and be nekkid ;) I don't think anyone would want to see either of those scenarios :D

Ahh cool..I missed this last response. I'll check it out when I get home, and play with it this weekend. Thanks! :D

And why would I wanna play air guitar, when I could play real guitar? (/me is a musician too :p)

Bah...thus is my problem. I have the Cyborg Stick 2000. It's a standard analog joystick, and the site doesn't have squat about it. But you say you have a USB one...I saw it mentioned on their site too...think maybe I'll get me one of them.

boogey,
yeah i remember you too. mostly that you presented me with my ass a lot if i remember correctly.

i play most all of the mods so i'll jump onto the demon uk server from time to time. when you saw me, i was probably either kind of holding my own, or performing some unexplainably stoopid manuevers - depending on the time. between 5:00 and 7:00 pm i can ping at about 200 to the uk, after that its around 450 - 550, which ain't no good.

and i too have seen the (.)(.) person. it's not me. i'm going to contact the us patent office about it when i get some free time.

although they might also be eyeballs. or the dreaded "freckley testes" - i hear there's a pretty bad outbreak of that in the uk these days.
