View Full Version : Weird happenings online

Hi there!

I get some strange behaviour when I try to play online. Here's the details:

I am using UT 4.28 / 4.28a (win/linux), this happens with both systems. I also have the Bonus pack installed and usually use the Skaarj Hybrid Model.

But, whenever I enter a server that doesn't have the bonus pack (at least I think that is the case, as I get a different model and no message pic) the player models slide around in a torso-hit-position instead of running around, and I hear CTF messages instead of taunts.... and sometimes I'm stuck and can't move.

Anyone ever experienced this? any ideas? Is it due to the fact that I use the S3TC textures with the OpenGL renderer? are they in some way incompatible?

Any feedback welcome... I'd really like to fix that

Homer

It may be a combination of these things:

1) The server sucks. Check the ping of the server before you connect.

2) Your connection sucks. If you have dial up, what ISP do you use?

3) The server probably does not run the bonus pack, so it won't recognize the skaarj skin and since it would default you to a different skin, the voice binds automatically changes.

I have experienced everything you have mentioned. I have found a couple of servers that gameplay is usually good on with no ice skating players and they must run the bonus pack. Come on admins it is the year 2000, get the bonus pack!

thx for yer reply... but my connection is perfectly OK, low ping and zero PL, but still skating.... not to mention the strange taunts (ever wanted to say 'My House!' and said 'Defend Our Base!' instead? that sucks! :)).....
I tracked the problem down to the (tadaa!) S3TC textures.... I removed them and bang! everything perfectly normal except of course the defualt model and the missing talk pic, which is perfectly normal with the bonus pack missing on the server. So basically I'd say THIS SUCKS! :)

apart from that you're right: get the bonus pack, guys!

lol Homer.

I don't know why it would change the taunts like that, since if you use a taunt, no matter the voice, it'll still be a taunt (for me anyway).

As for the stuck position, I've seen it happen a lot to my bots (on my team) after I shoot them. They're running, I shoot them & they start sliding stuck in that position. It's so funny! :)

Homer: I don't know the exact solution here..but there was a thread on this exact problem not too long ago. I believe the actual issue was the Compressed Textures and OpenGL renderer. If you do a search, you'll probably be able to find it...or maybe the people who posted a solution will see this and respond.

DOH!..just noticed you already found this out..oh well. :p
