I remember when I first started playing CTF and it seemed as if everyone was always heading straight for the flag, to hell with defense. Recently I have noticed a reverse trend, just the other day on a WW server playing Terra 8v8 the opposite team had all 8 memebers inside the base playing D..it was actually quite funny. I ran in and grabbed the flag and suddenly felt like the last beer at the party..everyone wanted me :D

Has anyone else noticed this change on the pubs???
What is the reason, the points, the combo, what???

Could it be an increase in people who are into their NGStats? I would think that playing defense would help your efficiency quite a bit as compared to flag-running.

Hehe,

Whenever I play CTF (which is a rarity) I normally play on defence because I have:

1. little or no knowledge of the maps (apart from easy ones like Face )

2. little or no CTF strategy or ability.

At least in defence, I'm of use to the team.

Same here, Inflictor. I rarely play CTF, but the other day, I thought I'd jump in a game just fot the hell of it. It was a map I'd never seen before, so I immediately proceeded to get lost.

"Hmmmm, maybe I should just defend my base?"

After grabbing some weapons and stumbling across some armor, I finally got back to my base. Then, after hanging out for about 30 - 45 seconds, a flood of blue guys came rushing in. (I was on red.) I did my best to hold them off, but it was 3 to 1 and needless to say I didn't last very long. But, as I was hopping around, spraying flak all over the room, I wondered, "Why aren't any of these guys going for the flag?" I was totally dumbfounded and probably stopped right in my tracks as I caught a glimpse of the flag. "Ahhhhh," I thought. "It's blue . . . "

I sorta know how you feel...

Except that in my case, I get hopelessy lost in Assault (which I never play online...) mode. For about a month, all I did was follow the bots around, even for Frigate! Yea yea, I know frigate is the easiest assault map...

I rarely get lost in CTF maps unless the creator didn't do a good job at indicating which base is which (lack of colored lighting, the symbols, etc...), I either learn the map or don't play it. :D

It's the stats...
Easier to rack up high point totals killing flag carriers.

With my bigger than average ping ;), I can't play defense in CTF much at all. I'm often dead before I see them coming... Running for the flag makes the high ping a little less of a problem.

Hi,

lol@alison, not that I've ever done that. ;)

I always play defense. My connection is slow and bursty. I leave the big O to the lpb's.

Funny though. I remember specing a guy on orbital that had a rock solid ping of 800 and he killed on offense. He didn't tloc he just ran. Nobody could hit the guy he was so out of phase. I began to wonder if he might be a DSL guy that had flooded himself to put himself out of phase. He got the most caps running like a plow horse between bases. Bizarre.

Recently at GameSpy with 20 players on November I found red had 4 guys at the base of the tunnel around the flag, 4 guys by the pool (I peed in that pool out of spite) and 2 guys out front. Geez.

Thanks

I still play lots of games, where my complete team goes after the nme flag and I'm the only one willing to try keeping our's at home.

I think it's a map thing. On some maps (November, Coret, Face, ...) everybody wants to defend while on some maps (Dreary, Gauntlet, Caves, ...) everybody is attacking / freelancing. These maps are really easy to win if two decent players decide to dedictate to permanent defense. If not: Pure chaos. Both flags are taken all the time.

I'm a hpb and if I lag very much, I prefer to play defence.
It's difficult to survive as a flag carrier if it's a lot of lpb's on the other team. I don't care about stats, so if needed, I do kamikaze attacks if an enemy have taken our flag. That's make me suicide a lot, but I don't care as long as I save our flag.

I remember a game on Gamespy Speakeasy. It was November. There were a few PuFers, including Cobra. Well, Cobra, on blue, was playing mid, on top of the sub. NO other blue guys were going for our flag. They were pretty much ALL standing around the stairwells. A couple by the flak cannon, a couple by the shield belt (there were 4 of em belted at a time), a few up the stairs, a couple at the top, and one sniping at the far end behind Cobra. It was ugly. They won in OT, 1-0.

Whenever I play CTF I always try to look how many players are on defend and who is taking the flag. Unfortunatly on Public servers there is no such thing as organisation so I defend AND take flags. I just look who runs forewards and I walk with him/her defending or covering or taking the flag myself.

Laziness?

Cowardice?

Lack of familiarity with the map?

I Dont think that's true. It's the D that keep the enemy from winning. And you get lotsa frags. Tho i play O , alot of credit goes to D.

well, i just think some people naturally lean towards defense. i play defense a lot for these reasons:

1.) i don't want to screw up a coordinated offensive attack.(i.e., i go off on my own to get the flag without any cover, if i actually get that far and grab the flag, then it isn't there when the coordinated offense with backup arrives to take it properly - and of course i'm getting killed somewhere else on the map with it).

2.) defense is as important as offense and seems to be the most likely portion to be over looked on a pub server (contrary to what's been noticed lately, i'm usually by myslef on D)

3.) suckage.
