View Full Version : What's with those sheets?

How did whoever of you did it put sheets in your map that represent things like bloodstains on floors? I don't mean the decals automatically spawned by the engine, but those that are built into the levels, like in the Vortex Rikers, or the carpets in DM-Gothic? Putting sheets at the same position at the floor or wall makes them invisible, and placing them at a distance of 1 or whatever else will cause them to be unlit. I'm not happy about it, because with them, boring areas become a bit better, and several things can only be done this way.

You can't meld a sheet with a floor or a wall.

Lets say you have a room, and you want a bloodstain on the floor. So you find a texture that is the same as your floor, yet with a bloodstain (I know skyile texture has allot of those) and you position tha texture on a block, and make the block even with the floor.

Did that make sense?

Yes, it makes sense! And it's exactly the way it works and the technique that was used in the Vortex Rikers level!

Don't substract the brush first! Just add it.

Why people constantly want to use sheets for this is beyond my comrehension.

Sorry, but you're too late. I found it out myself about an hour after posting this (by looking at DM-Gothic) but forgot to indicate this by another posting. Thank you for answering.

Using sheets allows you to use a masked texture, so you don't need one with the same floor pattern.

Yes, but the sheet will look stupid because it will float 1 unit above the floor. Or it won't be seen at all.

You can't see that it is 1 unit off the floor unless you can get down to eye level with it (difficult with most floors), and even then it is hardly noticeable.

you can always tun off the grid!

Have you guys realisticaly tried putting a sheet one unit (or less than) to the floor?

Unreal has a tough time telling most video cards what to shot so you have some ripping problems.

My first map CTF-Warrior makes use of this with the team logo in and on the bases - not heard of any problems with it so far...

No, really. Before I found out about how to do it, I tried achieving it by putting nonsolid sheets one unit above the floor (even when the grid is off, brushes will always be automatically snapped to a 1 unit grid, even when the position is typed in the actor properties), but for some obscure reason, these tended to be unlit and also obstructed view of weapons I put directly above them. And it also looked bad because one unit is one unit and not zero.
