okay, a little background. being jobless until recently, I finally had money to get Unreal. I know, it's sad, but that's the way it is. anyways, I've been an active mod-maker in other games under different names. I had this great idea for an Unreal or UT single-player mod. I had a conversation with a friend though:

DeadEye: think I may do a mod in unreal, rather than Half-Life

SAILORMARS1: regular Unreal?
if so
screw it now
that game flopped within 2 monthes of the release

DeadEye: how so?

SAILORMARS1: how so
its so single player based peeps want Multiplayer
its graphics WERE great for the time
but the game is stock full of bugs
hell their STILL releasing patches for it

DeadEye: HL was no fun at all
crappy interface
I hated the graphics too
and it was too repetitive and boring, especially near the end.

SAILORMARS1: HL rules
Quake even more so
Unreal and Unreal Tourney blow
check it
Quake and HL have TONS of **** for them
Unreal nothing
UT not much of anything worth really looking into

DeadEye: HL blows
-------------------------End Rant Session-------------------

so anyways, I was wondering what people think about what he has to say. would ya'll want to see a good SP mod? would it get played? or should I flush it down the tubes, and go with the (grossly over-rated) multiplayer flow of the gaming industry? Post some answers.

DeadEye

(P.S. What's good for makin models in Unreal...3DStudioMax?)

UT will live forever!

UT rocks no doubt. But I miss single-player stuff. I want to solve puzzles, hide from monsters, blast monsters in lots of gibs, and have the satisfaction to complete a good single player storyline. That's why I'm playing a lot of Unreal1 recently. :)

Do your mod!

Lord_Dragon[FB]

that's some cold ****
well...

UT isn't dead, but mods are starting to die out. the only ones that survive are either widely publicized or are classics that have huge fan bases.

yet, i will say, there is a chance. make the mod. even if it does not get played, you accomplished something a lot of people won't or can't do.
...and maybe it'll get popular too...you never know...

gl if you decide to do it.

Just curious ... why do you think that the multiplayer flow of the gaming scene is grossly overrated? To me, playing multiplayer with a bunch of cool people is way, way more fun than any single player game, and it seems that with the rapid growth in broadband (eliminating issues like Internet lag), the multiplayer gaming scene will only get better.

I'm sorry, but that is the biggest load of cack I've read so far this year. UT has been out Since November 1999, Half-Life since November 1998, Quake since the end of 1996. OF COURSE Quake and HL are gonna have more stuff for them, as the mod makers have had just a little more time to make mods for those games :/ And has that guy every heard of a couple of little mods called "Infiltration" and "RealCTF"? D'OH!

I'd throw their comments into the Recycle Bin and just get on with making a great mod :)

Multiplayer IS way over-rated. Have any of you checked out the PU poll? More people play offline than online. It's certainly a big factor, but single player is just as important. So I'm sure there are lots of people who would be willing to check out a single player mod :)

Multi PLayer over rated??
I never really imagined people would play UT offline more then online, they're missing a lot of fun..but then most people probably have connection issues:( I remember playing quake and online games were a constant battle with pl and ping with my lousy ISP AT&T(lo blow:D)
I'd love to have a single player mod for UT. Every now and then I'd like to blow up stupid monsters. If I can do it in UT that'd be even better because I love this game more then any other fps out right now....hell dues ex has been collecting dust for the past week!! Your friend is probably a HL enthusiast and thus biased to UT. Chances of your mod's success depenend largely on how good it is...and are the same in UT as in any other community.
BTW I just noticed...I made zac's sig woooOOOt..typos and all:D

Ironic that you should say that just as I change my sig ;)

You did have over a week in there though, so it's all good :)

Last Line: "UT not much of anything worth really looking into."

Hah. Well. Maybe that's because he hasn't looked into anything. Damn, there is so much cool work being done in the UT mod communities... Your friend is ignorant.

And it's true, MOST UT players play offline, so a single player mod/map (as opposed to a multiplayer with bots mod/map) could find an audience, no doubt.

Tell sailor mars to light 'her' joint and smoke it elsewhere

UT is not even close to dead.

As for multiplayer ruling over singleplayer... I'd say most definitely not anymore... multiplayer only games have flooded that particular market, and I think gamers are looking for a little something else. Some of the best title in games excelled as single player games, and were mediocre at best as multiplayer games.

But look no further than American McGee's Alice in Wonderland. That game is one of the most anticipated ones in the works right now. And it's single player only.

Frankly, I'd like to see a single player mod for UT. UT's single player mode excelled in Assualt, In my opinion. It would be nice to have something a little more mission/level oriented, rather than a single player mode that merely simulated online play.

And as a final note, HL couldn't have blown that much... it is probably more popular and more played than Quake and/or UT... it's graphics are great, and it's puzzle-solving gameplay and enemy AI are purportedly incredible (i've never played).

nod jing, *very* good AI, monsters constantly raped me sideways, etc. Decent graphics too, definately a top rate single player game, but I enjoy UT's multiplayer mode far more than HL's (or Q3, but Q3 is just horrid compared to what's out there, imho)

I don't think so.......

It really does not surprise me that more people play UT offline than on. To me, thats just a testament to how great this game is. I used to play Quake2 online, but I ran into a lot of problems wih pings and such.. I actually played CTF with the mod CRBOT offline..(It really sucked)

I played UT for 6 months offline, Once I resolved my network issues, I have been playing exclusively online. Just wait till a good portion of these people that play offline discover how thrilling and fun playing online can be. There really is no going back, (unless a single player mod is developed).

Well, I still haven't defeated Xan yet, maybe I'll go back just to kick his a$$.....hehe :D

Mc Ego's Alice looks as interesting as staring at a wall for 5 hours. Why studios keep churning out these piss weak Tomb-Raider wannabes is beyond me (not really, it's obviously for the $$$).

3rd person on Console = good
3rd person on PC = ass :)

UT ain't dead, she's about to get a major shot in the arm with the GOTY p1mping the best UT mods on a vast scale :D

Even today I still play unreal! It is fun, fast and always interesting!

But when I tried to summon monsters in UT, well thing kind of got strange!

I think UT weapons are way too powerful for those stupid monsters.

My only problem was with the warlord. But after I got the Redeemer, well, you know, bye bye birdie!

I think single player mod for UT may yield fruitless. There is a trend to go online and be in DM or co-operative games.

Playing single players games maybe a nice diversion, but a dying trend... I think!

Go on and make your sp level. The only problem with ut sp levels are the changes you have to make in the .ini files (maybe this could be sorted with a umod file).
A few months ago I was develloping sp levels for half-life.Then came a new patch for this game and I didn't like the way it changed things so I decided to pass to a better engine.I carefully studied both q3 and ut and decided to come into the unreal community (mainly because you can't make sp levels in q3,but also the unreal engine is better).
Don't know if I'll ever be able to finish my sp conversion for ut ,but I'll install any sp mod i can find.Including yours.
I must had that the Unreal engine is the best for modmakers and mapmakers (map compiling with other engines last for days, weeks sometimes!)
