Hey guys,
I have always had a dual boot system in which I can select Win2k or Win98. With that setup, I would install all my games under Win98 and sometimes play them under Win2k and they would work fine. Now I have removed Win98 SE and I am using Win2k exclusivly. But this is my problem, when I install UT there isn't one flaw, except slightly slower performance and a funny error when it shuts down. Now that I patched it to v428 it won't start at all. It just displays the little Metal like Unreal screen and reads my cd for hours. Then I tried uninstalling and patching it to v425 or something earlier and again the same thing. Then I tried just playing without the patch but many mods and features are missing...oh...and it goes really slow on Face and LavaGiant.

The worst thing is that it works on my friends computer just fine! The only difference in between our computers is the graphics card.

I have a P3-550/196 PC-100 RAM/Tnt2 Ultra/Nvidia 5.32 Detonators/Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer.

He has an ATi.

Is there a known fix for this? I really want to patch UT so that I can get the FPS my setup deserves, and so that my punk friend can't gloat. :) For now I'll just make fun of his moTard graphics card. :)

Thanks in advance...

Sorry to hear that man. I'm running a full install of Win2K myself and I have run it with a tnt2 card, voodoo3 3000 and now a Hercules 3D Prophet II Geforce2 MX. My assumption would be there is something with the driver install for your Vid Card.

*shrug* =\

That has happen to 2 of my friends who have Win2k.
Check your devices IRQ. For my both friends all devices shared the same IRQ. That may be Your problem.
They disabled ACPI, after that all devices get their own IRQ. Or in BIOS, disable PnP OS.

during my brief foray into the world of win2k, i got ut working fine..

i've got a p3 500(running@600) 128mb pc100 ram and a tnt2. however i installed the detonator3 drivers (they're newer than those ones you're running) and then i installed ut, patched it, then ran it for the first time. it was incredibly slow starting up (felt like it took 10 minutes) but finally it detected my vid card and whatnot so after that it seemed to work fine. although with win2k expect some framerate droppage. i uninstalled win2k soon after. ;)

Unfortunetly, this is one of those "out of the blue" kind of problems, which could be due to any of a half dozen reasons, from hardware to software to OS...

Try to isolate the problem to as little sources as possible. Are there other programs (not just games) which are acting funny? Did you do a fresh install of Win2000 or the upgrade from 9x route? Checked hardware settings (IRQ conflicts and the like, no yellow "!"s or "?"s in device manager?

Too many variables in this one as it stands.

Well, since Rooster switched back to 9x, I guess I'll have to take his Win2000 "Works Fine For Me[tm]" phrase.
