How about this: I thought it would be extrememely nice to build a deathmatch level as a large multi-leveled tree house ala DM-Peak transplanted to the World Tree of the Templar(sp?) homeworld in the Hyperian series. Seems high-potential eye candy, but I can't see any way around major poly count problems unless one is a very good texture artist or knows a lot more tricks than I do...

I did a tree top DM map for Alien Legion. It was inspired by the N64 game Turok! /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif
It was actually finished, playable and fun (atleast I thought so). I still have around here somewhere, I think.

I think my glory days of mapping are over, if you call nothing glory.

you could try the tree top lev by using custom masks for most of the leaves an ****, and only a few poly's for the branches and trunk, my two cents anyway

Nah, I didn't have any leaves. Kinda wished I did but I didn't have the resources for texturing.
Here's a link to the map. It was never officially released and I'ld try to keep it on the down-low to avoid the rath of Strife.

I dont know if you played Hidden and Dangerous? I wonder if anyone built an outdoor map with dense forest ( a Vietnam movie style ) Lots of trees, grass, swamps and stuff. Im not sure about the polly count.
They have something like that in hidden and dangerous

Me thinks you could do like in R6 or most other games. Instead of having individual trees, have textures that look like trees + leaves from a distance.

Xoom's free baby! Unlimited for the using. Already uploaded over 100megs one time and no complaints.
As for using masked textures for a tree outline, that's the best idea along the edges or where you want to simulate dense trees. Ah... I know what I'm trying to say but can't say it right. Somebody send me a bunch of masked tree textures with a regular background tree textures so I can make a map to show you guys what I mean.
