Why was it that you all movet to UT in the first place, and what is your exact opinion of Q3A. Here I go:

Well, my dad bought Q3A for christmas, and he installed it and whatnot, but when it came time to playing, after five minutes, my dad said "So what's all the hype about? I still don't see how this is so good". Well, when I played, I felt I should be more forgiving, so I tried the many options and configurations and played both offline and online. I found it to be pretty easy compared to what I had expected. And by the time I had seen every level that came with Q3A (which is mostly DM levels, and bland ones at that) I became bored, I found the bots to be too easy for such a so called "advanced" game. Well, it's still installed, just to see if it runs on the Matrox G400, and it does, I believe my dad un-installed it, because all he and I ever play are UT ;) Well both of us got into UT because we owned Unreal, and decided to give it a try. It was a pleasant surprise, I thought, "this game is a little older, and it's way better. The levels were incredible, the bots, challengeing and much more like real opponents than Q3A's. So, here I am, obsessively getting every good map and playing OL and off, and having a great time.

What makes you think I moved?

I've played UT since its release and have never touched Q3A.

Besides, A topic like this is bound to turn into a UT vs Q3A war...

That is if anyone from planetquake hears about it, other than that its gonna sound pretty much the same post to post.

Maybe there should be a new planet called planetutvsq3a and the ubb would have all the UT vs Q3A messages so everyone would be content with expressing their interst in saying what game is better and why instead of expressing it by enjoying it.

Naw, I just go to PQ and bash Q3A, just to razz 'em. And hey, a little war about games that are wars in themselves wouldn't hurt :)

Uh, we've had our share of this.

And anyway, like Zombie said, what makes you think we moved? I didn't move. I played Quake and Quake2, yeah, but I tried Q3A AFTER I got UT, and didn't like it nearly as much as UT.

Well, I know many people that had Q3A first, and they all share my opinion, it stinks. AND, since I played UT after Q3A, I could have had a more biased opinion in favor of Q3A, but I don't, it's biased to UT :)

I started playing UT because I had Unreal. I bought Q3A many months after I had UT. Q3A is visually excellent on my card (herc prophet) but UT isn't so shabby either. I still play Q3A for pure DM slaughterfests but UT's gameplay is far superior - UT requires more cunning and finesse, plus the maps are far more creative IMHO.

I started out playing both demo's. And in the end I bought UT, and forgot about Q3. A week of so ago I headed over to the gamespy stats page. about 3000 people were playing UT, 2nd place after Counter strike. Q3 was way down on 7th place, even after Q2. :)

I was a very active Q2 player, and for most of "us" (Q2-ers) it would prove to be an abvious step to continue with Q3, but I just changed my mind. :)

As for looks, it's what you make of it. I'ma mapper, and I believe I'm capable of making things far more beatiful than Q3.

It's just an opinion tho, no need for flamin'

hehe, welcome to the forums :) yeah, i think UT rocks. i played both demos (i liked the quake3 demo better than the real game, lol) and started playing ut because that is what my roomate was playing at the time. i got hooked to it, and after a while tried Q3 again, because i liked the demo. i couldn't stand it, made a descision of UT, and that was that. both games have huge, vocal fan bases, so this may turn into a war, yes, but oh well.

i never really 'moved' from quake to UT.. if anything i moved from Unreal to UT.. heh, anyway.. I downloaded demos of both Q3A and UT overnight, expecting to be awe inspired by Q3A and disgusted with UT (up until that point i thought UT was just a way for Epic to squeeze a few more dollars out of the Unreal engine;/). turns out it was the other way around.. i mean i don't hate Q3A.. its alright, i just like how UT feels more than Q3A. what really sold me on UT was the variety of levels.. especially DM-Morpheus.. i loved that one.;/ funny thing is i barely ever play that level anymore; bots are too easy on that level anymore heh. especially since i've gotten my computer upgraded UT looks/feels more real than Q3A does.. Q3A almost seems cartoonish.

I actually DID move from q3a to ut. I actually hated the game at first (UT), since the bots had the annoying habit of making headshots with the sniper while I was still in the air after being placed up there by some other annoyingly good bot with a rocket launcher :)

THEN, I turned off auto adjust skill level, and it instantly became a lot more fun :)
It seems to adjust the skills of the bots to make them win, rather than making the games even.

UT has far better lighting, level design, and weapons then Q3A. Also, the different game types are fantastic, as well as the fact that bots actually perform pretty well in CTF.

http://www.planetunreal.com/images/bullet2.gif
The sniper is in a very bad mood... he's been fragged by Archon 4 times in a row now... finally, he gets the chance for revenge he has hoped for. Slowly, and very carefully he aims his crosshair at the annoying bot. With a feeling bordering on extacy he pulls the trigger, allready picturing his opponent's head flying from his shoulders.

SPLAT! His last vision before darkness enfolds him, the mockering face of a bot carrying a rocketlauncher.

I had Q3A first. When I played it I wasn't really impressed. I figured that FPS' like Quake, Doom, Duke3d, etc. had just gotten old, and should be retired; in favor for others, like Team Fortress 2 (if it's ever released) and other, more innovative, and more involving games.

Then here came UT and proved me wrong. I don't expect to buy any further Quake games, unless I see that they come up with a lot of new, and better elements.

I know this is another thread, but let's face it; Romero and id were both a lot better off before he left. The Quake series is going downhill, and from what I've heard, read, and seen, Diakatakakakta (you get the idea) pretty much sucked.

Will id be able to do the Doom series justice with Doom 3?

I think quake 3 has a superior graphically, when the image quality is the about the same, I will probably have like a 30-40% higher frame rate. I am not on a voodoo, and I hear that UT plays better on them though.

That is about the only thing Q3 has over UT in my opinion. I thought the bot chat was pretty cool in Q3, but then the bots in UT starting saying "You suck" and "Die, *****". I was blown away, that is the coolest crap.

UT is a lot deeper in gameplay than Q3. Translocations, alt fire, killing sprees, "special kills" like depressurizing people in DM-pressure. It's sooo much more addictive.

SilentStrike, did I just play 5 or so FFA DM games with you? They were the ones that MooseCrap kept on winning. If so, good games. :)

Has anyone ever got a screen shot of the smiley face on a flak shell??
I get an average of 50-60 fps (this is in UT btw, only 40-50 in Q3) and the face on the shell is usually on screen for about 1 frame!
Ah, I could use the editor! put one on floating and wlak up to it! anyone want to do it, i would love to see it :)

I've only noticed that smiley face once. I was in the center room on CTF-Orbital on one of the catwalks and someone on the ground lobbed the secondary flak at me. I was looking down as the shell rose up towards me, but alas I was too high ... the shell reached it's apex literally a foot or two below me, so it was suspended there for a moment and I got a great look at the smiley. I didn't have the presence of mind to take a screenie though :)

Start a server with an admin password. You and a friend join in the server. Type

God

Now you're in god mode. Just have your friend lob flak shells at ya and take a screen shot.

Or use the editor.....
;)

It's pretty funny looking...

Screenie taken on Coret: Get the flak, go to the console and type "playersonly". Fire secondary and walk around the floating grenade.

#On topic

Here's how I switched to UT:

I kinda stopped playing FPSs after Quake I. Most of the newer games weren't nearly as good (IMO), or had totally bogus mouse&keyboard controls. I walked through Q2 in godmode (didn't like that game at all), then I got Q3A. I played single player quite a lot, but never played online because I had a crappy 56k modem.

When I got UT, I thought it sucked! The weapons were all wrong, and the game just didn't "feel" right. So I kept playing Q3A. Then I got cable, and some friends of mine were playing UT online. I joined them, played some, played some more on my own, and after a while I just stopped playing Q3A. Now my Q3A CD is just collecting dust on a shelf, and I play UT way too much. :) Until now, I've only played UT-CTF online, never a single player match (well, I did play one, because someone wanted to know where the savegames are stored). And everybody knows Q3A-CTF doesn't stand a chance against UT-CTF.

So there. :)

in a practice mode, select the flak cannon, then type 'playersonly' in the console. After you do that, fire a flak shell, go around to the front of it, and there you go, smiley! Sometimes when I'm bored, I'll use playersonly and I'll fire a flak shell real close to a bot, then go around to the other side and fire another flak shell at them, then, turn playersonly off and watch him get splattered, hee hee, he couldn't do anything, hee hee. I once tried to see how fast I could finish an assault game on Frigate with playersonly on... 3 seconds. But I got bored with playersonly and play it like normal people do.

I didn't switch either. I played both demos then bought UT when it came available. I bought Q3 just over a month ago for $30 after shipping, because some guys on the net I know play it occassionally, as well as UT and some other games.

Q3's graphic effects are pretty nice on my Viper2 and I get good frames as far as my system goes, but I find that the whole crappy colours, dark, Hell on earth theme of the Quake series is getting old. Well, then I tried the Mods that every Q3 fan proclaims as Q3's salvation. TF, WF, and JB all have the same drab colours and quite frankly I would much prefer to play TFC, much to the horror of many a Q2 TF player.

The biggest advantage that UT has, besides it's unique and well rounded gametypes, is it's engine is much more refined. Not only does it have great graphic effects, but the colours are more vibrant and capable of a greater variety of map styles. Perhaps Q3 is also, but so far it seems every Q3 mod is using the same colour scheme as id.
