Superfetch

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

WITH MY REQUIREMENTS IN MIND, should 'Superfetch' be:

Not over time, but supposedly always. And not just boot time, but also any application startup time.
I recommend just trying without to see what works better for you. You can separately turn off superfetch for booting and applications, btw.

From what I understand, you should always have superfetch enabled, unless your system only meets the minimum RAM requirements for Windows 7.

So since you have more than 2gb of RAM, leave it on. You are getting the performance increase.

I'm not sure if I want it trying to predict what games I'm going to be playing, and loading a whole load of sh!t into the RAM it'll probably have to dump anyway. Does it actually affect in-map performance, or just game/level loading times? I don't particularly care about initial game boot times and level loads - I just want maximum performance once within a map.

When you're dicking around on the internet using 1GB of your RAM, superfetch will fill up the remainder with something you're likely to use. When, however, you decide to pull up a game/program that needs that RAM, superfetch gives it all up and the program that is running takes priority. It doesn't mess with performance at all, it won't affect game level loading times nor performance.

You should always have it on, no matter how much memory you have or what you're doing, because free memory is useless memory that you don't need. If the amount of free physical memory is more than a small fraction of the total amount, you're not getting the performance out of your computer that you got that memory for in the first place.

Memory management technologies have changed since win 2000/xp.. time to leave things alone, and move on. There is no longer a need to "fiddle" with modern operating systems to get more performance out of them.

Absolutely it should be left enabled.

However, don't expect benefits for games...that's not really what it's designed for.

Last I heard superfetch kept executable content cached rather than/more than the content the executables used. So, if that's true, then it won't make any difference for games.
