View Full Version : UT3 HOLP 2 Released [torrent]

21st Sep 2008, 08:55 PM
We have released our second HOLP map pack for Unreal Tournament 3:

HOLP (Hardcore Oldskool Low Poly)

# 9 Levels in total, 4 CTF and 5 DM levels.
# The focus is on great gameplay.
# Hardcore oldskool (think UT1) levels with minimum clutter, maximum gameplay, and somewhat decent visuals.
# Nearly all contributing level designers are professionally active within the games industry.
# Involved were Barballs, h0ok, Sjosz, HazelH, Slainchild, XYZ8000, Mclogenog, EvilMrFrank and Ignotium.
# Great perfomance.
# Wide range of themes and colors.
# No or limited bloom, depth of field, motion blur, normal maps, and so on.

Mirrors (more as they become available):

http://holp.pathnode.com/files/holp2.zip.torrent (sorry I'm very tired, posted wrong link)

PS3 Download (http://files.filefront.com/HOLP2forPS3zip/;12084195;/fileinfo.html)
Only torrent avaiable until mirrors are up and running.

This pack IS NOT meant to look awesome, nor to rival the graphics found in the retail UT3 levels. These levels are meant to provide pure gameplay, not to look great. We hope that our levels will bump up the popularity of the classic gamemodes DM and CTF, and get some clan play going again.

Hazels map doesn't display a picture... just so you know.

21st Sep 2008, 11:35 PM
Christian Plogfors' Razor map is the only one I've seen so far, but I've never seen such a beautiful map. The waterfall, the shiny textures, the vivid colors, omg.... nerdgasm.

Looks like I added the wrong .ini file to the zip :hmm: Fixed version http://www.hazelwhorley.com/downloads/DM-Chizra.ini

Could you perhaps also post the (entire) correct .ini in zip format, for easy foolproof replacement?

22nd Sep 2008, 11:39 AM
I'm pretty sure that is the entire correct .ini. Just save it somewhere and drop it in your CustomMaps folder. No need to zip it.

22nd Sep 2008, 01:04 PM
Great job HOLP team! Those look like very nice, playable maps!

22nd Sep 2008, 05:14 PM
Really nice. It feels like playing UT again, really cool. If only more people would actually play the game...

I think the skies in like half the levels were super horrible. The colors and brightness levels of half the skies didnt fit the levels at all, and they felt very dark and weak while a sky is suppose to be quite bright and powerful as a light source. A shame since it takes a minute to fix.

Razor was super awesome, though the trees seem to kind of disrupt the environment for me. The architecture and lighting are awesome though.

Slains DM level was neat. Cool style too. Horrible sky though.

Yogurt really has too many flashy textures and lights, and way too many different colors. The whole point of holp is to go back to the original style, which was quite subtle and in a way dark and empty.

22nd Sep 2008, 05:30 PM
Way too much bloom in some of those levels. I can't remember which of them prompted me to try it on lowest world detail, but even then the red and blue team logos and direction indicators were way too bright.

22nd Sep 2008, 06:00 PM
Had a go at 2 DM levels:

The lack of health is irritating IMO, also I didn't like how every weapon have their 2 ammo pack right next to them. Other than that one of the wall texture is extremely repeated.

Good level though, not too open or tight, was great.

I think the Materials are really awesome, they have a little different specular look to them, and I'm glad he got rid of the ass ugly, florescent Green lines that just didn't worked :P. The level itself looks even better in game. But I have to agree with Hourences, the sky just don't cut it. However I like the little star touch you did to it Slain. As for the gameplay, I can't really tell since the AI's are retarded in TDM, and since this is specifically designed for TDM... looks tight though

Did you made the textures?

22nd Sep 2008, 07:00 PM
The only problem - no mappack name prefix on all maps except two - I have to look up levels one by one. :(

22nd Sep 2008, 07:08 PM
Dang, I thought everyone was doing that :( I guess not.

22nd Sep 2008, 07:52 PM
The only problem - no mappack name prefix on all maps except two - I have to look up levels one by one. :(

Yeah, I second that. It'd be nice to have them named with the HOLP2 prefix. Actually, I think at least one of them is, but I do have to search all over for them.

22nd Sep 2008, 08:22 PM
Yeah, two maps have the prefix - one DM and one CTF.

22nd Sep 2008, 11:56 PM
I actually don't mind, i would prefer a bit of consistancy though: either all of them are prefixed with HOLP2, or none of them are. No mixing and matching plz.

But otherwise i am having the time of my life on these levels! GG

23rd Sep 2008, 04:32 AM
Yeah, I second that. It'd be nice to have them named with the HOLP2 prefix. Actually, I think at least one of them is, but I do have to search all over for them.

Actually i was the only one in the team insisting in using the prefix in the filename, cause sadly, the game sorts maps by their filename, so no matter how you pimp out the "friendly name" on the *ini, the game will still sort then for their filename, and according to them, it looked too unprofessional

23rd Sep 2008, 05:20 PM
There's a good point in that post, but i still wonder..... why not just prefix the filenames as well? :B

23rd Sep 2008, 05:27 PM
There's a good point in that post, but i still wonder..... why not just prefix the filenames as well? :B

Because the prefix would be as long as the map's name in some cases and that's a bit ridiculous IMO.

23rd Sep 2008, 05:34 PM
IMO it's a bit meh, but seeing as the UT3 menu system sucks so much i've actually ceased to care about these matters completely.

Just some brief comments on each map, but first I'd like to say excellent job and these HOLPs just get better with each iteration.:) I think they should all really have the 'HOLP' designation in the name though to find them easier in the UT3 menu.

- CTF-Cardinal >> seems like a standard inside castle CTF, a little dark, good layout and flow, the bots on my team need serious help.

- CTF-Razor >> crazy futuristic space base with good theme, wide-open and good layout, I like the textures and waterfall as well as the lighting, definitely a HOLP with some signs of plant life, bots are a little better but still not that good.

- CTF-Vogel >> Oh Lava!, sky could be better but still not bad, great flow and layout as well as item placement, tight corridors, z-axis, bots are toast.

- CTF-Yoghourt >> lots of z-axis for sure in this one so watch your back/front/top/etc. Crazy and futuristic with lava and other tripups and flows well with an interesting top route. I think the colorful lights and textures make this map stand out in a good way.

- DM-Agony2 >> similar to original, excellent gameplay and flow, good shadows and sky, great floor, nice trim and ramps, losing the redeemer was fine but it should have kept the enforcer, the items seem off a bit but can't tell for sure why (because they're not off so nevermind), have played Agony3-SE yet.

- DM-Bonescraper >> reminds me a little of DM-Empowered2 from UT (that is if I'm thinking of the correct UT map) with its great layout, mazes/ramps all over the place, fun map and bots are OK.

- DM-Chizra >> kinda like Unreal (not bad and excellent remake, sort of), slightly darker and bots are OK.

- DM-Echelon >> plain grays with single color stripes and some lighting, decent shadows, sky not too bad with stars, excellent flow and gameplay, bots suck but TDM is slightly better.

- DM-Precision >> may need extra "caution" in this one.;) It's a good map, but the bots suck but not as bad as Echelon. This one is smaller, tighter and has less z-axis than Echelon and could have used a little more health.

That's all folks!:)

12th Mar 2010, 06:41 PM
Yea I skipped putting the redeemer in cause the redeemer is way way more powerful in UT3 than in the original UT XD

28th Oct 2010, 09:39 PM
Any reason why CTF-Vogel won't appear in alpha order under the V's even though I changed the friendly name? Although, what would happen if you put the HOLP2 prefix here in all of them? Nope, that doesn't work either, son of a..........:(
