AUSTIN, Texas - September 16, 2008 - Epic Games, Inc. today announced at the Austin Game Developers Conference the winners of the first phase in the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest, a competition that rewards aspiring game developers for making exceptional game modifications (mods) for Unreal Tournament 3. Awards for the first phase of the competition include cash prizes in addition to Velocity Micro PCs loaded with Intel® Software Development Products.

In each category, cash prizes of $2,500, $2,000, $1,500, $1,000 and $500 will be awarded for first through fifth place winners, respectively. First place winners in the categories for Best Deathmatch Level, Best Capture the Flag Level, Best Vehicle Capture the Flag Level, Best New Game Type, and Best Character/Customization Pack will also receive a high-performance Skulltrail PC featuring dual Intel® Core(TM)2 Extreme quad-core processors courtesy of Velocity Micro.

"These $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest winners demonstrate the imagination and innovation developers and enthusiasts have achieved on the PC gaming platform," said Jeff Abbate, marketing director, Intel Software and Solutions Group. "Combining Intel developer products, our Intel® Core(TM) processor family, and high-performance platforms with the Unreal Engine modding tools provides a wonderful opportunity for aspiring developers, machinima artists, and modders to unleash their creativity."

Added Randy Copeland, president and chief executive officer of Velocity Micro, "Selecting winners was tough because there were so many cool submissions to play, but the winners deserve the accolades for their really unique mods. Velocity Micro is honored to support the winners by awarding them our fastest Raptor PCs to help power their future game development. I can't wait to see what's next."

"On behalf of everyone at Epic Games, I would like to congratulate our Phase 1 winners. We have been blown away by the quality and variety of the mods submitted in the first round," said Mark Rein, vice president, Epic Games. "I'm really looking forward to future phases to see what these amazingly talented mod-makers can do when they have even more experience with the Unreal Engine 3 toolset that comes with UT3. I'd also like to wish special thanks to our sponsors Intel and Velocity Micro for their participation in the judging and prizes and to the 3DBuzz folks for putting together videos that have trained so many up and coming developers how to work with our technology."

Wow! 3rd place for BeachFront in Warfare \o/! That's much better than I could've hoped! I must admit Version 1.0 was quite dated and had its share of issues (since fixed).

Congratulations to all winners!

*sigh* Just over 2 years ago $1500 US was worth close to $2 200 Canadian, but now they're worth pretty much the same amount . C'mon US! Time to heal your economy already! :p

Yeah, constructive feedback is always very helpful and definitely important in improving one's skillset. Does anyone know if Epic plans on releasing a small quick write-up or blurb on the submissions to help the modders improve? Even a quick numerical breakdown rating map's "gameplay", "visuals", "performance", and "creativity" (or whichever criteria they made use of) would do wonders :).

Does all that money come straight out of Epic's pockets? It's got Intel's name all over it. If Epic doesn't have to pay for it, it is to them, "free labor" ("running on the ps3 is a big plus" indeed).

I think you've nailed the visuals. Safeguard is a great map, to be sure. I'm pretty sure the layouts just edged you out. React is a bit bigger and has a pretty interesting flow. Touch is a really large map, which is rare in CTF, and there's really just more of it. More is better. :)

It also may have something to do with the fact that React and Touch are both brand new layouts. I'm sure someone from Epic could give you some feedback on that.

yeh from what iv been told.. seems to be because mine was not a new layout, its not looking good for dreary3 then.. guess ill make something "new" for phase 3. I hope I can get the time... to do something new with dreary level of detail
Im hoping to do well in the best graphics catagorys

As usual, hal is right on the money (although size doesn't really matter as long as the layout supports it adequately).

So was I mistaken in thinking all creators would recieve feedback on their entries? I still have very little idea what the judges were looking for in the categories I entered so constructive criticism is worth more to me than any prize listed.
