View Full Version : Mario vs. Sonic vs. Master Chief vs. who?

My roomate and I and a couple guys were feeling nostalgic the other night after a small poker tourney and decided to fire up some Mario Kart 64. This, invariably led to a Super Smash Bros[64] tournament which inevitably turned into another drinking game.
At some point the conversation turned to console warfare and everyones true form, the hideous fanboi, emerged. Of course, I'm a PC gamer so I was treated like a second-class citizen in the argument.

However, it was decided that the only way to ever settle this would be to let the mascots fight it out, preferably to the death; a Royal Rumble is in order. But we ran into trouble filling the ticket for the main event.

If...
Nintendo =
http://i33.tinypic.com/27zjhxc.jpgor you might also sayhttp://i37.tinypic.com/2isjupf.jpg

and SEGA =
http://i36.tinypic.com/ncb5gi.jpg

and even Microsoft =
http://i37.tinypic.com/15yvurt.jpg

Then what the hell does Sony = ?
this guy?
http://i34.tinypic.com/15s33ow.jpgor maybe this guy?http://i33.tinypic.com/b47o2d.jpg

I'm at a loss. Every major player seems to have a clear cut icon except Sony.

Technically, Solid Snake is a Nintendo Icon who crossed borders.

And everyone who knows anything about video games knows that Samus would kill everyone. ;)

Crash was the Sony icon from the PS1. I don't think his subsequent outings have done as well, have they?

Isn't that their new officially announced icon character?

The iconic Playstation franchises for me are the Tekken/Soul Calibur and Twisted Metal series. I guess Twisted Metal is no longer around though, and Tekken/Soul Calibur don't really have one iconic character throughout.

Snake is probably as good an answer as any, tbh.

Tekken icon would be either Heihachi or Jin.

So for me a Sony icon would be Heihachi:

Yea, there's Soul Blade on the PS1.

Well, technically that's not SoulCalibur, and SoulCalibur was released first on Dreamcast.
After that it was never even considered exclusive on any system.

How it's an "icon" I don't know.

Tekken however is a different story, but as the poster said, there are too many characters in either game to give it a "VS" title. Shoot you could give Virtua Fighter to Sega if you wanted to go that route but who would you pick?

I remember crash being compared to mario and sonic at the time.
So Crash, for me, equalls Sony.

I think the best Sony characters that have been exclusive that could be systemwide idols would probably be either Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Dexter or Sly Cooper (yeah, all platformers too). Since Ratchet and Clank was the only game on the PS3 (so far) I would go with that. Ratchet is badass.

I was thinking of Ratchet&Clank and Jak&Dexter as well.
Crash was Sony's icon during the PS1 era, with Spyro becoming the unofficial 2nd in the console's last years. The franchises were then brought over to a few minor developers, which resulted in the string of sub-par cross-platform games of recent years. The original developers of the franchises however, Naughty Dog and Insomniac respectively, started to work on new IP's, which were Jak & Dexter and Ratchet & Clank. So I guess you can say that those games/characters are pretty much Crash's and Spyro's spiritual successor in terms of platform heroes/icons for Sony.

Alternatively, I'd go for Kratos.

spyro, crash, and lara croft for sony,
link mario and pikafart for nintento
Masterchief, marcus fenix and that damn time traveling cat for xbox
The paddle from pong, the ship from space invaders and pacman can represent arcade consoles
Random RTS building of 1337ness, generic soldier and Xan can represent PC.

Bring it on!

What about the PC mascot?

Although the Tomb Raider games have always been cross-platform, and there's been a greater emphasis on the consoles in recent years, I think a lot of people associate Lara Croft with the PC. Or maybe it's just me.

Other than that, Gordon Freeman, Doomguy... Max Payne maybe, although sadly the MP games don't have the same cachet.

Another tack you could take is that the closer-knit, larger communities that PC gaming generates can create mini-celebrities out of real people. Everybody with the most tenuous link to online gaming knows who Johnathan Wendel is, or Gabe and Tycho at Penny Arcade, or Jack Thompson (:D)... and every PC game community tends to have a few internally much-loved key figures.

Yea, there's Soul Blade on the PS1.

Well, I always though of Soul Calibur as an extension of the Tekken series of sorts. They're pretty similar and some of the characters cross over. I know it's not exactly the same series, but there's some continuity. And in terms of uniting the fan base, I think you could point to those series as games that everybody has played at one point or another and people who have never owned a Sony console are more likely to be familiar with.

Jak and Dexter? Ratchet and Clank? Who the hell are they?

Heihachi would probably be the best choice for a Tekken series icon.

In a physical sense, Master Chief would kick Gordon's ass. The MJOLNIR armor is much more advanced than the HEV suit. But Gordon is much smarter. It's really hard to tell who would win.

The characters from two main platform series of the PS2.

Jak and Dexter were made by Crash B's developers. Ratchet and Clank were made by Spyro's ones (AFAIK).

IMO Mario was just lucky, because he's a terrible mascot. Sonic on the other hand is a really well crafted mascot. Mention "Blue" and "Hedgehog" and you know exactly who is meant.

Jigga wha? He had 2 tv shows(that come to mind), is a star in alot of sports and Party titles, as well as being on a buttload of t-shirts(to which I own 3) Also anyone born before 1985 should know that if you mention an italian plumber who likes pasta should instantly know its Mario. If not I slap you with a smelly fishy substance.

I'm not arguing that he turned into an icon, I'm saying it was luck (well sort of - I can explain but lazy atm) + timing.
I'm saying if you put forward both Sonic and Mario now, as a mascot idea - on paper Sonic makes a much better + memorable character.

For starters I know a lot of people who are not at all into video games who don't even know he's a plumber. (Why would they I don't think a single game featured anything to do with plungers or the like)

Actually that's all I can be arsed to type now :D

He likes pasta? How do we know? I never knew that :hmm:
