Eidos yesterday announced that they have a new Batman game in development, Arkham Asylum. According to GGMania, the game is running on Unreal Engine 3 and is expected to release sometime next year.

The game supposedly does not follow the comic book of the same name, nor does it have any association with the recently released Batman movie, The Dark Knight.

Described as a dark and gritty title in the vein of BioShock, Arkham Asylum appears not to be based on the comic of the same name. Instead, the original game's story was co-written by Paul Dini, who is best known for his work as a writer, producer and editor on Batman: The Animated Series. Powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 3, the over-the-shoulder action and detective game is being created by Rocksteady Studios, developers of Urban Chaos: Riot Response. The title is slated to hit PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2009.

That looks like it could be quite awesome. ShackNews has a bit more information. The source of the news is this month's GameInformer magazine, the GameStop affiliated magazine.

Indeed - a big opportunity to make a decent game and with the UT3 engine it could be very stylised and unique.
Let's hope they don't £uck it up.

So, do you guys know Urban Chaos: Riot Response?
The game is a like a overly brutal kindergarten fantasy of policemen, paramedics and firefighters.
Police-brutality is necessary and good if it's excersiced against punks with hockey-masks!
Medics are always nice females!
Firefighters can be black but still lovable! *gasp*
Although of course they need the help of the trigger-happy policeman all the time!
Hostage situations are best resolved by shooting the bad-guy in the head and waiting for overly brutal freak occurences to dish out poetic justice! <-funniest parts of the game, imo.

The thick layer of republican propaganda on top is actually so extreme (cheesy live-action cutscenes of news-reports included!) that it can only be seen as a cynical parody.
The gameplay is brutal but fun, so overall it's a pretty cool and funny game.

Seems like the guys aren't afraid of violence and tounge-in-cheek humor. Good properties when dealing with a Batman game, imo.
