View Full Version : My first attempt at Vector Art!

Well, I finally got my hands on a copy of CS3, and I've been messing around with illustrator. I'm learning how amazing of a tool it is for graphics design, and how much it leaves photoshop in the dust when it comes to designing things. (Though photoshop of course will always be on top for photographic corrections and color/tone adjustments).

Here's my first attempt at vector art. Everything except for the cropping and resizing was done in illustrator, including the slight gradients of the hair and eyes and the rosy cheeks. Here's from start to finish (Hand drawn to illustrated).

...And finally the finished image.

Hope you enjoyed my learning process. If you have any good tips on working with line art, please let me know!

Very nice. I need to get my hands on Illustrator CS3 and learn to use it.

So far I manage fine by using Photoshops pen tool which is using the same technique as vector art to save shapes. But it doesn't have the full abilities as Illustrator.

Looks good. I just don't care much for that style of art. You know, the huge eyes and small mouth.

I'm thinking of getting illustrator. One of my friends have it, and I love what he's making with it.

Illustrator's pen tool is about 10x as powerful as photoshop's pen tool. I'm quickly learning that illustrator is truly the most powerful tool in the CS3 suite, and it's making me realize just how much photoshop is not for design and more for touchups.

That's some really good stuff for your first attempts at vector man. I've never been able to do anime when i've played around with the style myself, i always end deforming all the dimensions and forgetting the style i'm going for but you've pulled it off, nice work.

It does come down to the old vector/rastor business though. Certainly illustrator is the tool for vector, ie graphics design for the most part while photoshop is ideal for... shopping photo's.... to be honest it's all in the application titles.

While we're on the subject though here are my first few shoddy attempts at vector art;

Nice work man.:) Now let me see you do an epic city scape with insane detail that you will see in some animes.:)

This is so neat.
How did you figure out which colors to choose for the shades?

My Illustrator Adobe "Classroom in a book" just arrived - but I didnīt have time to do much so far. At College we covered the Photoshop "Classroom Book" for the basics and I thought this one might help as much as the other one did.

Illustrator has skintone swatches, I used those as the base, and just modified the actual tone later. :)

Excellent.

I'm guessing the dark part on her head is a headband?
could probably use some work on that part because I wasn't sure what was going on there at first.

Anyway, great work.

I hate anime style art, but that picture is really clean and well polished. Nice job.

I'm sure Bob will give you critique on how well-formed your tentacle pr0n is.

He knows what he's talking about, or so I hear.
