So far I've bought english books over ebay germany. I don't need shiny new books, usual wear and tear is ok, missing pages ain't.
My problem with ebay uk and us are the shipping costs(and UK auctions are too expensive almost always anyways :( , but what do you expect from people that pay 5 pounds for one glass of beer).
amazon sucks
does anyone know of a place online where I could find what I seek?
btw. I always look for Vonnegut and Philip Dick books. Right now I am trying very hard to find stuff written by Charles Bukowski.

try www.abebooks.co.uk (http://www.abebooks.co.uk) its pretty similar in price to amazon on stock that amazon actually has. but it has lots and lots of second hand books at much better prices. ive ordered from three or four different sellers and have had excellent service each time. and it has like, any book you can find an isbn for.
as for bukowski ive read about five or six of his novels and loved every one but recommend post office and south of no north are my favorites right now, although i want to read some more of his poetry. hes a pretty famous author over here though so places like www.waterstones.co.uk (http://www.waterstones.co.uk) or www.bordersstores.co.uk (http://www.bordersstores.co.uk) or other british high street booksellers usually have a fair inventory.
as for shipping prices i guess youll have to earch around :S

If it's sci-fi you're after, try a specialized science fiction/fantasy bookshop. They generally also have a large selection of second hand books. The most part of it will be German, but one bookshop I used to frequent also had a decent English collection.
I'm sure there has to be at least one in Berlin.
For new books I use bol.de these days, which is cheaper and more reliable with pre-orders than Amazon. Less than 5 Euros for a US paperback and no shipping :)

What's so bad about Amazon? I find it's quite cheap for classic books.
Another possibility are sales of used books, they have that every few weeks at my university and I think I've seen it before in front of the FU Berlin.

that abebooks site is great. Just have to figure out if I can buy alot of books and then let them pack it into one big box. 50 british cents for most of the Dick books I've been looking for is mad!
thx ana

There are some specialised shops but they aren't cheap or I haven't found the cheaper ones yet. I just can't get myself to pay 10 euro for one book(If it was something special like that certain edition of "man in the high castle").
I'll have to look at bol.de and determine if I can live with their pricing.

do a quick search for Philip Dick on amazon. hardly any item is below 10€ which I deem too much.
Funny that you mention the flea market-ish(thats not bad!) book sellers infront of Berlin's universities. I had a quick glance over their items while delivering my university applications a week ago. I almost bought a book by de Sade but then realised that I needed something to drink and eat first. :)
edit: and ben, I really want to be a student at the FU. Any chances to see you there?
thx for your suggestions so far guys. It's always appreciated.

Nah, I'm studying in Leipzig. Although I might continue elsewhere after getting my diploma and the FU has an excellent Institute for East European Studies (I'm majoring in International Relations and specializing in the ex-Yugo countries), so all is possible at some point.
