View Full Version : Best FPS ever!~

Okay so I asked this on IRC just a few minutes ago, if you had to chose 1 first person shooter for the best ever award what game would it be?
I went with Terminator: Future Shock at this point in time.
Mod content shouldnt be counted towards this, only official content. It doesnt have to be single player or story driven!
Edit:
Tally
Unreal Tournament (Epic Games) = 7 votes
Deus Ex (Ion Storm) = 4 votes
Half Life (Valve Corporation) = 4 votes
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Infinity Ward) = 3 votes
Doom (iD Software) = 3 votes
Unreal (Epic Games) = 3 votes
Duke Nukem 3D (3D Realms) = 2 votes
Quake (iD Software) = 2 votes
System Shock 2 (Irrational Games, Looking Glass Studios) = 2 votes
Terminator: Future Shock (Bethesda Softworks) = 1 vote
Wolfenstein 3D (iD Software) = 1 vote
Daikatana (Ion Storm) = 1 vote
Requiem: Avenging Angel (Cyclone Studios) = 1 vote
Bioshock (2K_Boston/2K_Australia) = 1 vote
Perfect Dark (Rare) = 1 vote
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (GSC Game World) = 1 vote
Chex Quest (Digital Café) = 1 vote
Halo: Combat Evolved (Bungie Studios) = 1 vote
Battlefield 2 (Digital Illusions CE) = 1 vote
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (Troika Games) = 1 vote
F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon (Monolith Productions) = 1 vote
Half-Life˛ (Valve Corporation) = 1 vote
Call of Duty (Infinity Ward) = 1 vote
Unreal Tournament 2004 (Epic Games, Digital Extremes) = 1 vote
Okay this is what I got so far, there are a few votes for UT and for other games but I think some of those are breaking the rules. If you want to repost with a single game answer or clarification I will add those to the list.
Please no editing of posts for changing votes please, just stick with your answer for the duration of this tally hey

My opinion of best game ever would be System Shock 2
The game had:
Good singleplayer story.
It was creepy, and recieved reward for good horror.
It had nice action.
There was the tinkering part, where you had to learn to hack security, repair jammed weapons or even modify them, wich gave the rpg part a good boost and made the game pretty awsome.
The music was just awsome, it provided a great deal to the whole gaming experience, the feeling you want when playing game.
The only thing it didnt have that came later with a patch, was the multiplayer co-op and there was no versus gameplay, like dm, tdm etc, but still it was a great game.

I'd say UT on the grounds that it's the only shooter I still aggressively play even a decade after its debut (as opposed to passively playing Perfect Dark, Doom2, and other shooters). Since I still play all the Unreal SP packs through my UT as well, I guess I include Unreal in this selection
But if you asked me "scariest", "most action packed", "best narrative" and questions like that I'd give you all different answers.

Can we try to select 1 please, I realize its tricky but no one is going to hold you to this choice. Just say which ever you think is the best right now.
There has actually been some discussion of which games should or shouldnt be included. For eg someone mentioned while deus ex is an awesome game it might not be the best at doing the shooter portion, it is however a shooter but it might not contain much of those elements depending on how you play.
So we have 2 votes for UT and 1 for dues ex?

single player : F.E.A.R.with HL2 : EP2 as very close second. (finishing F.E.A.R. at 3AM was really great)
multiplayer : UT2k4. it's that game that made me discover the whole community. (even though I've seen a bit with UT and UT2k3, but never got involved)

Ofcoarse there are many, we are discussing whether or not descent is an FPS or not. Is it more space combat or vehicle shooter rather than what we've come to know as FPS, is witchaven an FPS because its a majority melee combat in FP.
Like I said no one is going to call you out on your choice on this, its just to get a general list together so if you see a game you think deserves to be on this list and isnt added, add it by all means. Chosing games already on the list is fine as well as long as their FPSness isnt disputable.
People are obviously going to make different choices based on if they like MP or SP more but thats up to you to list just 1 you think deserves the best FPS game ever award

Unreal Tournament
I wasted more hours on that game than I have with all others combined.
The time it took to map a level was a lot faster, and even though its relatively basic, it was cutting edge at the time. So the wealth of custom levels were insane. So many great custom ctf servers to play at like ZP!spoonfire/mathias , chudzilla's, Stealthdp's>UnrealPlayground, CTCR's, etc
MonsOlympus
17th Jul 2008, 04:25 PM
I did say custom content is not to be counted only official content so if youre selection is based mostly on that you might want to reconsider.
Isn't the answer going to be biased, since you're asking on a UT forum?
Half Life gets my vote
MonsOlympus
17th Jul 2008, 04:56 PM
Yeah it could certainly be biased but I think the tally is rather fair, thanks for adding halflife btw, thats one I would have liked to add myself :p
I do believe people can be alittle objective when it comes to this, I do perhaps realize not all the answers will be serious (such is buf) but Im adding those up anyways, just a wasted vote I guess but you never know... Hover or daikatana might win

What really got me into the FPS genre, is definitively GoldenEye 64 back in 97'. Then Perfect dark which was essentially better. so my vote goes for PD64. But looking back at it from nowadays, just makes me want to tune out.
MonsOlympus
17th Jul 2008, 05:57 PM
Yups, I believe counting the custom content would be alittle unfair since we are talking about the games as the developers wanted them to be played. Official expansions are okay to count for something like Quake for eg or Unreal, keep away from bundles though we are voting on single titles so while you can include expansions in your descision please dont count the whole series :)
Battlezone Im not sure on though, this could be disputable as a FPS game its listed as both Combat Simulation and Vehicular Combat, so like descent this might not be considered FPS. I did ask about games like House of the Dead or Time Crisis but I think the general consensus is these arnt considered FPS games.

Another one of these stupid questions? I'm with TossMonkey; asking something like this is useless.
But for the sake of not being any more of a dick, I'll thrown in my standard-issue response when people ask "What is the greatest _________ game?"
It's Deus Ex. All categories.
If Mass Effect were first-person I'd choose it to keep things current.

This is an impossible question to answer. How can you possibly hope to choose one that is better than the rest?
Well just the one you enjoyed the most.
For me, I would have to have two categories, multi player and single player.
Multiplayer UT 2004 would win hands down for the sheer amount of time I spent with that game and the amount of adrenalin and fun that game brought to me over the years.
But I don't think I really ever played it single player and if I was forced to play it single player it probably wouldn't even make my top ten of favourite FPS'.
And then the opposite for Singleplayer FPS' where the ones I really liked playing in SP, I never played much in MP. CoD4, HL2, FarCry, Crysis, RtCW, MoH, BiA, SoF, Raven shield, Delta Force... argh.
Probably have to go with HL2 for SP fun.

As much as I love UT, it would have to be Doom. Without Doom, we would have no Quake, and without Quake, Internet Deathmatch would've taken an entirely different tack.

gregori
17th Jul 2008, 09:26 PM
Wolf3D didn't make the concept take of as well as Doom did. Doom was a quantum leap over Wolf3D.
Whilst Wolf3D had some of the right elements, I think all current FPS's truely owed their existence to Doom. Doom has all the fundamental parts of FPS, that in many was haven't changed to this day (apart from Quake having true 3D, rooms over rooms etc etc)
I suppose it hold a special place for me because Doom and Heretic where the first FPS's I played. Nothing has topped the experience of playing those for first time (Although UT and Half Life came pretty close)
Vitamin-Carrot
17th Jul 2008, 09:27 PM

If you;re looking for something in the last few years, then Bioshock. I'm not sure I've played an FPS that has done such a fine job of narrative and storytelling.

I think I'll go with my favourite single player FPS, which is F.E.A.R., otherwise it'd be Unreal Tournament.
It's kinda weird now that I think about it, but even though I've played a ton of FPS games, there isn't really that many I'd consider favourites of mine. For example, I've never truly understood the hype surrounding Valve's games. They are solid games, but I've never considered any of them to be great. Same goes for a lot of other AAA titles like FarCry or CoD4.
I don't know, maybe I'm just feeling a bit jaded when it comes to FPS games and is expecting a bit more.

For me, it's extremely close between Half-Life and UT. I'm gonna give the edge to Half-Life though, because it has spawned some of the best multiplayer mods out there. Team Fortress Classic is the game that got me into internet gaming in the first place. I would argue that those were the best times I've ever had in a multiplayer game.
UT is extremely close though. Specifically UT instagib. I know that many of you despise it, but I'm an instagibber at heart, and some of my best gaming memories form around a small instagib community that I was once part of.
I wish I could go back in time and relive those days, because now that I'm older games don't impress me nearly as much. Everything is just "meh" these days. But that's what happens when you're a gamer. You eventually see it all and do it all and the novelty wears off.
Back to Half-Life, it has also spawned the most popular online FPS in the world, to this day! God damn Counter Strike. Say what you will about it (I'm personally not a fan either), but you can't deny that it has been an epic success in online gaming.
Then you have Day of Defeat. An amazing WWII FPS at the time, probably the best. And some of the [countless] community mods were great as well, "Firearms" coming to mind.
And let's not forget the single player! As awesome as the UT bots were at the time, you just couldn't top the story and event driven world of Half-Life. It's success has given rise to one of the best sequels this world has seen, a little gem known as Half-Life 2.
So to conclude, Half-Life and UT are the best FPS's ever. With a slight, and I mean SLIGHT edge to Half-Life. Perhaps if UT had come out before Half-Life my decision would be different.

Yeah its not really platform specific so Im going with the original developers only.
@Twisted Metal: I took that as a vote for Half-life based on official addon content, be careful using the word mod though as thats not meant to affect peoples descisions. So you can count TFC I guess since its part of official content like op4 or blueshift but counter-strike is going to be considered its own product as with day of defeat
Its a tricky one though because Halflife as of steam gets alot more officially than it did at release.

It's hard to pick one fps to be the "best".
You have to look at so many aspects of the game. Everyone likes different styles of game play.
my list (short)
ww2: cod/2
realistic fast paced: cod4 mp
realistic tactical: raven shield
realistic sci-fi: Shadow of Chernobyl
unrealistic face paced: ut2004
old school: quake 2
This would be easier if you narrowed the question down to best fps done in some particular style since everyone has a different taste in game style. Leaving the question open ended will lead to a gigantic list.
Touki
20th Jul 2008, 11:34 AM
Well thats the point, is it not? to see what kind of taste people has or whats their opinion is.
No need to narrow it down, its an overall survey, to see whoch game that would be picked the most and seen as the potential of being best FPS ever (i think i made sense, not sure).

Well I'm torn between Half life and Unreal Tournament. I love both games and their mods. Well if I had to choose between those two it would be Unreal Tournament. I had good times playing LAN with the bots. IIRC it was one of the few (or was it the only one apart from Unreal?) shooter at the time who had this feature out of the box.
Its kinda wierd you dont count mod content. One of the main reasons Half life became so big was of the great mods. Like Counterstrike which started out as a mod for Half life. Since it went retail back in 2001 CS became so big that you encountered people who did not even know that it was a mod of Half life.
Not to mention that Half life engine runs on any crappy PC.

Yups I'll add it up there but first alittle reasoning behind not choosing mod content. Lets say CS for eg, its not longer a mod its a retail product and I think to count that under the halflife banner like gamespy does for playercounts especially for best FPS ever would be unfair, especially considering CS really is its own game even if it does share some similarities and an engine with halflife.
Some games obviously have more mods then others so I dont think its overly fair to count the communities input, sure a big community can make a game better as far as MP goes etc. Theres also something to the community support for a game which goes towards how much people enjoy that game as well.
So I believe the original game will always stand on its own mod content or not and yeah makes it more fair

Dont know, what to choose, there are many games that are good. (HL, U, UT, DX, SS2, Rune etc)
Half-Life 1 (not counter-strike) - its has good storyline and atmosphere, original weapons and interesting levels (both SP and MP)
Yes, like a crowbar a lot more powerful than handgrenades and SMG :)
