View Full Version : UT3 Unreal Visualisation Toolkit - Heat maps - beta 1.0

23rd Jun 2008, 01:32 PM
Name: Unreal Visualisation Toolkit (UVT)
Version: Beta 1.0
Website: www.digitalfootprints.co.uk/ (http://digitalfootprints.co.uk/)

Generate heat maps, and other visualisations, of player behavior and navigation in a similar manner to that for Team Fortress II and Halo 3.
The UVT allows modders to log player data from any gametype and any level, although large open maps work best, by using a simple “Data Logger” mutator. This mutator creates a player behaviours data log file (.pbd) in your “logs” directory at the end of each round, which can then be loaded into the main Win32 application to generate the visualisations.

A separate “Screen Capture” mutaotr allows easy camera positioning to help create a good screen shot to use as the base for the visualisations. When a screen capture is taken, a screen capture data (.scd) file is also saved in your “logs” directory”, with the main screen shot being saved into your “ScreenShots” folder.

Once you have all of the required files, you can easily filter the data to show a variety of data combinations through heat maps, scatter maps or flow maps. For starters, you can show death locations and kill locations as well as player positions. You can also filter to show position, death and kill locations on a per weapon, player or team basis, and you can also filter for bot only results.

Instructions can be found here (http://digitalfootprints.co.uk/?page_id=5), download here (http://digitalfootprints.co.uk/?page_id=3)

Compatible with Unreal Tournament 3, UT2k4 soon to follow.
Help identify campings spot, filter for all kills with weapon “Sniper Rifle”, for example.
Show weapon imbalance, see if one weapon is dominating the map.
Automatically identify and visualise repsawn kills.
In CTF games, see which routes each team took. See where the flag carries went.
Show areas of level with high actively, as well as rarely used sections of a map.
Easily identify difference in bot navigation and human player navigation patterns.
Export data into Excel so you can easily chart weapons usage and player kills.

I’ve been working on the Unreal Visualisation Toolkit for some time and have just about reached beta. I thought I’d do a small release to the community to help track down bugs, and hopefully get some feedback as to what works and what does not, and any features you guys may want in the future versions! I already have a big list of bugs and features I need to tackle, but any new feedback is always appreciated. This is also my first ever time releasing some software so expect a few mistakes along the way!

It is my intention to keep gradually updating the toolkit and adding new features as I go, so if there is anything you would particularly like to see please speak up!

Unfortunately I’ve been unable to test full the data logger mutators replication and network functionality. It was the intention for the mutator to be active on a server, and at the end of each round save a .pbd log file in each players “logs” folder, for the player to work with whenever s/he wanted. However, I’m currently without a net connection in my flat so can’t really test this out! If anyone out there can test this mutaot over a server and let me know how it performs it would be very much appreciated!:)

You can get everything you need from the downloads (http://digitalfootprints.co.uk/?page_id=3)section on my site, along with enough sample data for you to have a go with.

If people could keep any comments to this thread, and not my broken forums, that would be a real help.

Tested Win32 only, some issues with Vista....

There has been seom data logger mutator compatibility issues found, I’ve had a quick go over the code again and you can get he new v1.1 beta here (http://digitalfootprints.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/uvt-ut3-mutators-v1-1beta.zip)or from the site here (http://digitalfootprints.co.uk/?page_id=3). These new v1.1 mutators will still work correctly with the original main application, and only attempt to address some of those incompatibilities on the UT3 side. Let me know how you get on!:)

That is freaking amazing. Love it. I had no idea that there was this kind of data tracker out there... I should rethink a few things.

That thing is priceless for gameplay tweaking. Also, what's going wrong on Vista?

P.S. Does it log bots?

I hope you put this thing into MSUC!! Brilliant!

Yep, I finally got in entered into the MSUC, it took ages and a lot of hassle, but I’m entered now, I think! There’s a new version up on the website if anyone is interested, it doesn’t add any new features but just fixes some back end stuff. i‘m still having some issues with mutator compatibility also…
