I can kick so much a$$ in a full house of DM.

But get my a$$ handed to me in 1vs1's?
Should I just sit back more in 1vs1 instead of being a hunter like in regular DM? I play often with very good players and always do very well, but when playing against these players in 1vs1 its usually a joke.

1 vs 1 is a whole different animal. A lot of the better players run routes to deny you the powerups and better weapons. It also involves listening for the other player and anticipating their moves.

For instance, a very good player may know how long it takes you to reach the next intersection, just after you pick up that Ripper, or use that lift. Then they just load up and let the Rockets fly just before you come around the corner.

It is very much a strategy and memorization game versus a twitch game that many over-crowded DM games become.

Big Keg, I feel your pain.

I've been 1vs1'ing for about 3 weeks now and after tonite I'm hanging up my 1vs1 gloves.

You play a lot of the same games I do...we both do pretty darn well.

In 1vs1's I'm like a newbie who hasn't plugged in his keyboard and is trying to play.

FFA DM is really messy, total balls to the wall carnage and mayhem.

1vs1 is sooooo much more subtle. People are usuing sound cues. (you can hear that shock being picked up from across the map). People are pimping the level grabbing your favorite weapon. They're not disctracted by 13 other players, they are focussed on one thing : you. They know your pattern and they've got a combo ready for you when you round the corner. Halfway thru any 1vs1 I end up feeling like a cornered rat.

Anyways, I feel your pain and I know what it's like.

I'm in the same boat as you, Buddy Christ (anyone seen Dogma?!?)

I like to think I'm above average at DM or CTF, but to put it bluntly, I suck at 1 on 1's. Generally I jump to a decent lead (i.e. 4-1) then end up losing 10-5, or so. I think it's because I'm too predictable. I do ok at first, then they figure out a pattern.

troll, don't give up on 1v1. i've been playing it for about 2 - 3 months now, and the first few weeks of it were pretty hellish. actually i still get beat down constantly when i play, don't lose faith girl!!!

Thanks everyone. Wing, Of course I saw Dogma. It took place in my town (Red Bank, NJ). Looks like Kevin Smith is going to retire soon however. He's pissed off at ABC for pulling his cartoon, Clerks.
