View Full Version : Technical question reguarding RAM.

I have 2 GB ram in my computer, it's OCZ Bran on 800 MHZ. I want to buy the same bran and RAM chip again, but this time 2 GB X1. My mother board has 1 free DDR2 slots too.

Now the question is, will it work well? I don't know if having 1 different ram stick with a pair of twin will work or help.

4gb by the sounds 2x1gb and 1x2gb... Sounds like it would work to me, the 2gb one might have to be in the first slot which means the other 2 wont be in dual channel mode.

Or what about this? http://www.lucomputers.com/product_parts_detail.asp?class=1&pro_class=97&id=6138&parent_id=97
My MOBO has 3 free DDR3 slots sitting ATM, I have a Asus P5KC, and I am not quite sure if using DDR3 ram along with DDR2 ram is supposed to get a full performance effect especially on this particular MOBO.

What you guys think?

I think using DDR3 along with DDR2 is a no no! Thats some nice ram there though but if you get DDR3 I think youd still end up with 2gb total

Gah plumb drumb, you deleting your posts again :p

I'm not sure (in fact I could be way off), but I don't think dual channel would work with 3 sticks. Can anyone verify this?

have you checked what the motherboards instruction book says?

Yeah that's the one. Unfortunately it has some BIOS issues and ETC
As you can see the 3 first ones are DDR2 slots, I only have one left.

Looks to me like the yellow and black slots are DDR2 and the orange DDR3. Using both DDR2 and DDR3 isn't possible, but it should work happily with 4 sticks of DDR2.

Oh ****, you're right. I completely forgot that one reading the manual... I feel amateur, you clearly see the pins too.
Crowze, you think I should go with this (http://www.lucomputers.com/product_parts_detail.asp?class=1&pro_class=97&id=6474&parent_id=97) for the 2 free DDR2 slots if I already got this (http://www.lucomputers.com/product_parts_detail.asp?class=1&pro_class=97&id=5979&parent_id=97)?

Timings are the same and they're from the same manufacturer, so they should work fine.

Ordered. If everything works fine I should have 6 GB of RAM. I'll put the new RAM where the current one is.

You have 64 bit OS right? :p

... considering this is kantham... that's a very good question!

32 Bit here, with level editing for GoW I often reach 2GB without Photoshop or Maya opened. It's insane.

a 32 bit OS can only use up to 3.5ish GB of ram.

so... change your os to a more secure x64 bit architecture! and use 6 GB of ram

I don't know what to say here. Sounds like I'll have to remove my current ram and insert the new one... There's **** tons of incompatibilities running on 64 bit anyway.

There has to be a software update or whatever else to make it use it? Come on... :(

Not really hey youre pretty stuck, 64bit OS to use a full 6gb really.

If I ever consider getting Vista in the next 3 years, I'll make sure it's 64 Bit.

You could try a dual boot to XP64, its not great but you can boot it up for when your doing gears stuff. Hopefully its stable enough to do that for ya

I've had no driver issues with Vista x64 myself, manufacturers have had well over a year to get them sorted out, and gaming performance is nigh on equal on XP and Vista. I hate to say it, but there's no reason not to get Vista over XP now.

You can always install any version of Vista without a cd key to see if all your stuff will run right for 30 days. Install the 64bit version, and if it runs correctly insert the cd key, if not install the 32 bit version and activate that.

I take it it's a sort of trial? I have 3 questions,

Would you recommend buying Vista Upgrade? (The upgrade box that you need XP installed first)
If yes, will it work if I have XP 32 BIT installed and I upgrade to Vista 64 BIT?
Does the Q6600 work better on 64 BIT?

ZenPirate

1- I prefer the retail version (after that, OEM)
2- dunno
3- no

*edit* It's kind of a trial. Vista, and XP SP3 allow you to install without a cd key for a limited time.

So basically, after 30 days something is guaranteed to go wrong, but before then you could just avoid the inevitable.

Nonsense. At this point Vista is quite stable, and a hell of a lot better that XP under the hood. Here's my reliability monitor for appx 30 days, and the only failures have been from a heavily modded Oblivion install. Now that Nvidia is finally releasing drivers that aren't complete ass on Vista life is good.

oh just "obtain" vista x64 and give it a go, a fresh install is ALWAYS better.

In 30 days an average person that knows what they are doing (and sleeps 8 hours a day), will have just gotten the OS to their fashion with their programs.

Eff that.

another year.
