I came across a rather nifty free game a few weeks ago that I would like to give some attention here. It's an opensource arena shooter much like Q3, with updated visuals and different weapons. It's available for Windows/Mac/Linux. You can see a gameplaytrailer and screenshots here.

Enjoy!

I heard CTF on that was pretty cool.

Nexuiz is a pretty solid game. Right up there with Warsow and Alien Arena 2008.

It looks EXACTLY like UT2004, right down to the facing worlds ctf map they show at the end of the demo movie...

Personally, I never really liked AA. It lacks in all fields in my opinion. I never heard about Warsow though, so I am going to try that somethime (I hope they have .deb packages since I switched to Ubuntu a few weeks ago).

You will lose that impression pretty quickly when you play it. The maps differ much from UT2k4 in terms of colours and there are effects in the game like HDR that aren't possible in UT2k4. Also, the gameplay differs a lot because the game hasn't got trick moves and has a wildly different arsenal.

But the map is obviously a ripoff.

Heck I've played Nexuiz' version of Face and I gotta say it was damn fun.

Oh please, take the trolling elsewhere. It's not like every other popular map design hasn't been ported, converted and remade a million times in every other popular shooter.

Orly? :( This is the first time* I've seen a map remade for another game. Did they get permission from Epic games though?
edit:*)other than mods of course

I wouldn't say he was trolling. Blunt, but not trolling.
Anyway, I've never heard of anyone needing permission to remake a map or a mod unless it was violating copyright law, especially if you're doing it for free. Showing my age here, but CTF-FacingWorlds was based on a RealCTF map. Then when the UT version came out it was remade for Q3A. And I'm sure there's probably remakes of it out there for pretty much any first-person shooter with a capture the flag feature. The reason? It's a basic, balanced map that's easily remade. Put two towers on opposite sides of an asteroid with gaps. Done.

I don't think Campgrounds has been ripped off by a different developer in the same way CFT-Face has been in this case. Sure there have been countless user-made remakes, but not official ones, afaik.

Nexuiz, should I remind people, is just a hobbyist produced, free to download game. It's basically the next step up from modding. It may be high quality, but it's still the same as a mapper remaking a map in another game.
Also DopeFish is probably right, I wouldn't be surprised if the layout of Face has come from somewhere else anyway. I seem to recall Deck having existed before UT too.

True. If it was a fully featured retail game I would worry more about people "stealing" layouts from other games. However, you're probably right, Face is a fairly simple layout anyway. Deck was in Unreal.

What hardware do you have o_O OpenGL <3 ;p I've been playing Nexuiz for a few days after I saw a thread on another site about it. It is a refreshingly fun game.

Pass. All I know is that my PC (Brand spanking new in 2004) doesn't like OpenGL, it never has.

This thing is awesome! Looks great, even on my crappy laptop. It scales to older and newer hardware very nicely.
I love how alot of the graphics settings can be adjusted without having to restart the game. And when you are doing it ingame, since the menu is overlayed over the game display, you can see how your framerate is affected. It's great to see how various new graphics technologies actually impact the game.
Personally, I think Alien Arena would be worth playing if the skins were brighter. As it is, I can't really see the other players.

Campgrounds was taken from Quake to UT, and since basically everything in Nex is user made it's the same thing. =)
I like this game, the Quake movement feels odd at first but the laser jumping and the knock back of the weapons is awesome. Some developers should take note of the genius UI too.. ^^ It still lacks a few features but it is constantly developing.

Just played this. Warsow is tons better, smoother, nicer and generally more awesomer.
Nexuiz just feels crappy to play and looks like quake with bad normal maps. Oh and the UI is terrible. Waaay too much text and confusing too.

I played Nexuiz a long time ago. Never really got the feel for it. I liked Warsow more and Ive only played it once before :P
