View Full Version : I Think I'm Becoming Addicted to Atlus

There's a Japanese videogame company called Atlus that seems to make a variety of games I end up owning and loving without realizing their common origin. I only came to realize just how much I like Atlus's games when I started looking for the next title coming from them (specifically a game called Baroque (http://www.atlus.com/baroque/)).
But every game from them that I have seems to end up being one of my cult favorites. From the surgical Trauma Center to the gorgeous Odin Sphere to the suicidal (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/08/06/) Persona 3, the Atlus game repertoire is truly impressive in a cult-hit kind of way.
So perhaps I'm becoming an Atlus fanboy. Is this a bad thing? Look at one of your favorite "where did that game come from?" games and check the title. You might be surprised. I'm looking at their game list and amazed to see some very impressive titles (http://www.atlus.com/games.php?sortby=gameReleaseDate).
Has anyone else experienced an Atlus game that really made them go "wow"?

I've never even heard of Atlus before now.

I don't recognize game developers much compared to their games as well, but have you heard of Ogre Battle, Persona, or Guilty Gear? All of them are Atlus titles.
Edited to correct bad information.

SMT3 Nocturne was one of the most amazing games I ever played. And I'm still playing it nowadays.
Press Triangle to Bam-bam-bam enemies to death. Battle ends :p

Never heard of them or their games, and I don't like the look of them either (yes I did read through the entire list)... they all look the same...

While I haven't ever had the chance to sink my teeth into the persona series, Atlus has been a favorite of mine. I used to play the crap out of Ogre Tactics in the good 'ol days.

Rofl, they are completely different ranging from 2d fighters to tactical rpgs. Anyways, of course I've heard of them and all those games, aren't they as big as Square-Enix, Konami, ect? I'm surprised people don't know about them.

Regardless of what kind of game it is you can guarantee that it's artistic style is 75% identical to any other game. That's what I mean.

All anime looks the same :p
It does now, in much the same way that all music videos look the same:
Lots of women wearing sparkly stuff wiggle their grossly obese buttocks at the camera and drool all over a guy who had the ugly tree spliced directly into his DNA whilst he waves around either tons of gold or wads of cash.
Oh, and at either the beginning or the end there is the mandatory shot of him and his "friends" in a car million dollar dripping with chrome and two-colour paint and.
And let's not forget the madatory vibrating speaker shot.

I've... not heard of them as such... i've heard fo Trauma Center but always thought ti was one of those games that was released on the cheap... i never played it though.... Apparently they made A bomberman game though so.... meh.
I guess they're good, you can't fault a Design team that can come up with something with a title like "Touch Detective" that's worth it's weight in gold that. ;)

Golden Sun is not an Atlus game.
And I really need to go buy Odin Sphere. If anything, Atlus games tend to disapper from store shelves quickly. And I ain't paying eBay prices.

[...]or Guilty Gear? What? No it isn't. Guilty Gear is done by Arc System Works and published by Sammy. I think Atlus might've published the first Guilty Gear though.
That said, Arc System Works is making an incredible-looking new fighting game called BlazBlue (http://youtube.com/watch?v=QiXL6NWzVXM), and it looks just sick.

Pretty much anything coming from Level 5 has to be part of my collection, I like quite a few of the Square(-Enix) games, Tri-Ace, and now Mistwalker too (though Blue Dragon wasn't as great as I hoped it'd be)

Yeah Atlus published the first GG in the States. I think Virgin published the Euro version.
Another game by Arc that should be released before BB is Sengoku Basara X (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDXSPUAHKiY). (Thank dog for these guys still investing time in the 2D fighting genre :D)

I agree with Fokker.
They all seem to be in the same anime style, regardless of their differences in gameplay this doesn't look too appealing.

Anime is a style, of course they look the same, just like games that use realistic 3d models all look the same. That doesn't mean Crysis, UT3, Half life 2, Quake 4, Halo 3 are the same games.
What you're saying is you just don't like anime style, which is all fine and dandy, but don't make it seem like you don't like it because it doesn't look original, cause nothing else does either. :p

Who said I didn't like anime style? This is about video games, I have a good collection of anime movies.
Originality has nothing to do with this. UT3, Crysis, etc are made by different companies.
This is one company that is apparently busting these things out like candy in a recycled manner. The website for each game has basically the same design and layout and like I said, regardless of the gameplay (I'm sure they make some fun titles) it just doesn't make for a very intriguing look.
But this is my opinion, if you don't like it, post another worthless "lol" and move on.

Also, to correct Trynant (again), it's Ogre Battle, not Ogre Tactics. You're thinking of the game Tactic Ogre, which is part of the Ogre Battle series.

Damn man, sorry, don't have to get your panties in a bunch just cause I didn't understand. :p So you're not talking about the gameplay or anime style or originality, so are you saying the website design sucks and is bland or what?

Well I corrected some of my (mis)information.
Anyways, I've started to play the three Atlus titles I bought today.
Arcana Heart is a fun fighting game, and is almost as entertaining as it is girly. It's very girly.
Baroque has a weird game flow. You're actually supposed to die before you unlock the training mode. Interesting, I'm kind of liking the game, although it's pretty simplistic. The camera sucks however :(
Rondo of Swords I've yet to really play but it seems actually like a solid SRPG and may be the best of the bunch.

I fail to see how I was getting my panties in a bunch by just stating my case nice n' calm-like. You need a class on interpreting text....
And again you're not actually reading what I said. I'm just making the case, like I did the first time, that their style of games (using the exact same design over and over) was not appealing. I used the websites as an example as to how they're just churning this crap out like on an assembly line ["like candy"] but you keep extrapolating it further.

Ogre Battle!!
And Ogre Battle 64!!1
Both games that were obviously not going to be huge sellers, yet Atlus published them, and they continue to be hallmarks. The original Ogre Battle was an incredibly innovative game for its time, and is my very favorite "underrated" game ever.

Anime is a style,
Anime is an umbrella term, like metal. For example I prefer the artwork of Akira over Digimon, even though they are both Anime, just like I prefer Iron Maiden over Metallica even though they are both metal.
...just like games that use realistic 3d models all look the same.
I know where this is going, this should be fun...
That doesn't mean Crysis, UT3, Half life 2, Quake 4, Halo 3 are the same games.
No they are not the same games, and they do not use the same visual style. Unreal anything is clearly different from Quake anything or Halo anything... see now?
What you're saying is you just don't like anime style,
Although this misunderstanding has already been addressed it was such a big misunderstanding I though it was worth picking at twice:
Anime is an umbrella term, like metal. For example I prefer the artwork of Akira over Digimon, even though they are both Anime, just like I prefer Iron Maiden over Metallica even though they are both metal.

So they have similar cover art. The games are completely different from one another. The concept artists may be an assembly line (which looking closely at the covers makes me disagree with that notion--even though they all are different forms of anime) you simply cannot say with any realistic argument that Odin Sphere's gameplay is identical to Trauma Center's or Persona. There's no assembly line shelving those quality titles out. Okay, maybe for Trauma Center :p

Great, either way Jack isn't being clear at all so I have no idea what he's talking about. He just simply says "their style of games (using the exact same design over and over) was not appealing."
What the hell does that mean? WHAT style? The type of gameplay is a style, the art design is a style, ect, ect. How the the hell was I magically supposed to know what he means? Even after I ask him to be more specific he just goes on to say some bs about me extrapolating it further and not understanding his posts which have no elaboration at all.
Either way I don't really care anymore and you're saying he's talking about the certain style of anime even though I already mentioned anime, well if it's just their certain style of anime then he should've damn said so. :p I still don't think he should expect them to mix it up. :p
Unreal anything is clearly different from Quake anything or Halo anything... see now?
Exactly, and Trauma Center is clearly different from Rondo of Swords even though they are both under the 'umbrella term' anime just like Unreal and Halo are both under the 'umbrella term' realistic 3d modeling, realistic cgi or whatever you want to call it.
If he disagrees that TC and RoS are clearly different well then that's where our opinions differ and I was right in bringing those games up in the first place.
