It's a lot of social commentary now which has sort of split its original audience. Seems like you either love it or hate it these days.

The problem with South Park's social commentary is that most of the time, it's done in a retarded way. They try to have it both ways (immature humor, serious topic) and just don't do it very well. They make some good points sometimes, but imho serious commentary should be made with sharp wit, and the South Park creators' wit is about as sharp as a bowling ball. They prefer to bludgeon their point with a blunt object.
Example: the "pu$$ies, dicks, and @ssholes" speech from Team America. My god was that ever awful. I know some people would disagree, but goddam. I actually fast-forwarded at that part.

Their goal in those episodes is make fun of the issue/the people in it and make their point across. They do that well the way they do it, imo.
You want serious political issue treatment you are watching the wrong show.

If I'd had internet access this weekend I would have continued my odyssey to the internet refugee camp in Californee. I was stuck at my Mother-in-Law's all day Saturday, and she can barely work a cordless phone, so a computer's right out.
This episode has really made me want to read 'The Grapes of Wrath'. I saw the movie when I was @13 (stupid English class, at least "Romeo and Juliet' gave us a 1/2 second glimpse of boob), but I've never read the book.

....
and IMHO they suck at doing it as most of the time the 'message' gets lost in fart-jokes and similar childish attempt at being 'funny' because they take a 1-minute joke and attempt to stretch it for the entire episode.
then again ... they're Americans. They've nly got two shows that are mildly entertaining (Simpsons and 3rd rock).

Bad episodes do that. The Britney Spears ep was one single comment (albeit a decent one) stretched into a 22-minute block.
The good ones, though, generally contain enough comments to last an episode and never let fart jokes overwhelm the show. For example, an ep parodying 24 had Cartman interrogating "terrorists" by farting on them. It's funny, crude, but still makes a fair point about the 24's glorification of torture as well as its use of racial profiling. Since 24 isn't one of the two American shows you find entertaining, you might've missed the commentary.
Besides, the good episodes rarely have a singular "message". The "I learned something today..." bits usually grossly oversimplifies all the sh*t that just happened for comedic effect.

They should have aired that Britney episode earlier. It kinda felt a bit dated when they did that episode.

Well a lot of times they cut production of a show that may even be about 90% finished to hash out a whole new plot when newsworthy bits appear suddenly.
Someday I hope they release a DVD that's sort of a "Lost Episodes" deal where they put together a preview of, or even roughly finish old shows that were scrapped in favor of making fun of breaking news.
