wtf shockwave/flash debacle did you have?My work comp runs Win2k. I've always had issues with Flash player not working on certain websites. scifi.com, nbc.com, a local radio station, etc. There's a black box on the screen, no video. Other sites work fine.

Last Monday I fired up my comp and Shockwave told me there was an update available. Why not? Suddenly, IE6 takes @ 3 minutes to start up. Once it's running everything's fine, but each new instance of IE takes forever to load. The only change was Shockwave, so uninstall/reinstall, then Flash disappears from my Downloaded Internet Files folder. So another round of uninstall/reinstall, with Flash added. IE is still slooowwwww. Also, after installing Shockwave, then returning to its download page, I get an error box that pops up to tell me "A file is missing" w/ "Yes" and "No" buttons. Not "OK" and "Cancel", but "Yes" and "No". The hell?

Googling points me to the adobe forums, where other Win2k users have discovered that the newest version of Shockwave does not work with 2k, and supposedly never will. I downloaded an older version from filehippo.com and reinstalled Flash from adobe.com, but IE6 is still slow. Turned off 3rd party extensions and it loaded just fine. Turns out Shockwave must have also done something bad to my google toolbar. So uninstall/reinstall google toolbar and IE now runs normally.

Only now certain videos on youtube don't work. Just never connects. I let that spinning/circling "connecting" dot run for 30 minutes the other day. youtube's help section suggests uninstall/reinstall of Flash - no change.

So now there are certain videos on youtube that don't run, and I still have issues with the same old websites. Fun.

That's odd that only certain videos won't run. I mean, it's all flash stuff right?

I uploaded mine originally as a quicktime file. I didn't de-interlace it prior to doing so. I wonder if either of those things have something to do with it not showing? Maybe if you go back to my link and try clicking on other various videos...? Or, **** it and just watch the ones you can.

Sucks though.

I was wondering if it's different encoding methods having issues with this hp/Compaq comp's on-board video drivers, or whatever. I will throw out other - possibly related - computer terms as they occur to me.

Depends on what version of flash the .swf is built toward.

Then wouldn't all youtube vid's be the same? I'd assume it encodes using the same format...

I too have noticed this on several different machines (the youtube thing)

An XP home, XP pro, and Vista machine. All 3 have had that "never loading" thing on youtube on some videos, but not all. It's kinda werid. As far as I know, all 3 machines are updated. If I find one of those unloadable videos, I'll post it here to see if anyone else gets the error.

I know for a while there was an issue with YouTube videos not loading for Comcast customers in the east from a certain set of YouTube's servers in L.A. (pretty sure that's where they were). It was ultimately a Comcast problem, they screwed up their network somehow. This might be something along those lines.

But, yes, Morety, the .swf that plays youtube videos is the same for each video afaik.

I just tried again using the uninstaller and downloadable installer. Still no dice. My computer does not want anything to do with Morety09, and a bunch of other random stuff. Maybe a registry issue?
