The Grid! (http://www.memphisrap.com/cgi-bin/content/pub9990263694155.cgi?itemid=9990285095284)

Apparently it's 10000 times faster then internet. And should be first available fairly soon. Hmm.

good performance-wise.
what about price ?
and how long will it take for it to have as much content as the internet ?

I'd give it a year to mature, if it isn't a joke of course (probe the origine of the universe... :o)

The only thing I don't so much like the idea of, is storing data and programs off of computer. Surely this leaves them open to all sorts of risks?

This idea has been around for a very long time. I can remember hearing about the grid as far back as 2001 and even back then, there was talk about it being available "soon".

IMO we'll all be old men before this is implemented and available to the average Joe anyways. Look how long it takes to get broadband to everyone.

The article is rubbish. The Grid is just a fibre-optic networking solution.

Putting things in perspective, 10,000 times the speed of a standard broadband connection (typically 1 or 2Mb/s), this would make the speed of The Grid to be around 10-20Gb/s. Ok, so that's faster than the lower limits of home broadband connection - but core link speeds are already being operated well in excess of 10Gb/s - up to around 20Gb/s.

The Grid is redundant, and won't be replacing anything any time soon.

Isn't all this rather dependant on the Large Hadron Collider not tearing a hole in the universe?

Anyone remember the "They're waiting for you Gordon..." thread?
