Tnx :)

I've been looking around and found something called WinGate which seems ok as well.

I take it, then, that windows internet connection sharing is not a proxy server program. What is the difference between the two??

I need a bit of advice from you friendly (fiendly??) PuFfers :)

RaptoR and I currently have two PCs (Athlon 600 and Celeron 500) on a home network (fast ethernet 100Mbps), both running WIN 98.

The athlon has a direct internet connection (56K) and the celeron connects thru the athlon using win98 internet conection sharing.

Both pcs can access the internet at the same time (sharing the modems resources) and the system is fine for browsing, e-mail, irc etc - BUT obviously we cannot game on-line at the same time :( (well this is not strictly true - we can but the average ping is 600 and packet loss is huge).

This situation is VERY frustrating :( so I am considering switching to ISDN (ADSL is not an option in our area)

So heres my question - if I convert to ISDN, which should connect at 128k (I think??), will we be able to game on-line on both pcs at the same time with each of us getting a connection speed of 64k, or a connection at least as good as it would be if we both had independant 56k connections ?

I know that this seems like a dumb question but I know very little about networking/communications and I want to make sure that I'm not missing something obvious which will restrict the connection before handing over my hard earned cash to those $%*&>< at British Telecom.

BTW we are UK based and our ISP is Freeserve.

All advice will be gratefully received.

Bolxshoe spasibo. :)

1. A 56k connection is definetly not enough bandwidth to play with 2 guys at the same time.

2. I've heard from several friends, that UT is unplayable with Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing, even with ISDN. Get a good proxy server program instead and it should work much better!! There are several good ones available on the net as free/shareware.

3. Getting ISDN is the best decission I've made since I play online and I can recommend it to anyone. Not much bandwidth, but great ping and stable connection. Exactly what you need for online gaming. And in Switzerland it is MUCH cheaper than cable or xDSL!

tnx for that cleaner :)

A stable connection sounds good :)

Are proxy server programs difficult to configure? I'm not computer illiterate but I'm no expert either. Is there one you would recommend ?

I've never configured one myself, so I can only tell second-hand, but from what I heard, it's not rocket-sience. Not more difficult than configuring MS-Windows. ;)

Seriously: I heard it's pretty easy. :)

Edit: Sorry, I can't recommend one. Don't knwo much about them.

There are many of them out there. I use something called Virtual Gateway.

It was pretty easy to setup and you can use the shareware version for 400 connections or 30 days unlimited. Here's the website.
