i just got layed off from my job and it doesnt look like ill be going back to work this month. at the same time gas prices just went up to 3.35 a gallon in my area.

i have a debt that i planned to pay off with that money and i might not be even be able to do that if my bills get too high from the layoff.

well, thats my little sad story. it would be nice to use the money towards a vacation but oh well, i gotta eat.

I wonder if investing all your savings in gold would be beneficial since the dollar is probably going to continue to drop in value...

No. The reason gold was abandonned as a reference value in the first place was that it fluctuated too much. Try platinum or housing.

I payed off debts. Nothing like being debt free when the US economy crashes. ;)

stimulus package fails

I'm taking the "free" stimulus check and buying some short term bonds. That way I can get some truly free money before I have to pay income tax on that "free" money.

already spent my tax refund in Feburary.

paid off some bills and bought food. Not what I wanted to do since it was almost $2000.00, but atleast I'm stable atm. lol

i was referring to the stimulus package.

i agree that it will fail. i put up this thread mainly because i think most people are going to do the same as me and spend it on debts and such that dont do anything for the economy right now.

I thought that was because the national banks wanted to have more flexibility when it comes to financial policy, because holding large amounts of gold to back up the money was so annoying, because the gold standard introduced additional costs into the economy (because a fraction of the GNP had to be used for buying more gold for backing up the additional money gained and consequently printed through economic growth), and finally because the world wars cost so much that the aforementioned fiscal policy flexibility was necessary for gouvernments to be able to print more money, have inflation taxes and fund their wars; and not because of any fluctuations in the gold price. Particularly because the whole point of a gold standard is that the gold price is fixed :)

Guess what they teach you at Uni these days ain't all that anymore then ;)

I would need a bigger tax refund for that.

Chucking it in my Vanguard account.

I still think the whole thing is stupid. The reason the economy is crapping out is because people are spending too much money. Giving us this check is like giving an alcoholic another drink.

You are going to give your tax refund to me, even though it is worth about 50% in the UK.

Wait, the reason less money is being spent is people are spending money?

Me and the wife are headed to England to see her family this June, so the money is going to defray the costs of transatlantic air travel.

^ To survive what is most likely impending doom my advice is: Make no new debt, pay off existing debt, put a set amount of money in savings every month (no matter how little it is). It's going to get very bad much sooner than people think.

Hell, I have a *very* good traditional pension plan and I just started deferred comp for 7% of my salary (like a 401K, but better) so I can actually retire someday without having to live in the streets.

A friend of mine buys silver(also special silver coin pressings from around the world) and sometimes gold whenever the value is promising profit. All you got to do is keeping track of the price. Gold and silver'll always be valueable.

Saw on the news the other day that the average American is spending $1.22 to every $1.00 they are earning.

I don't know who's more of an idiot though, them for spending more than they make, or people like me who are actually living within our means, knowing that we're going to have to bail their stupid asses out in the end anyway.

Well get ready to pay then, Dutch government taxes about everything they possibly can.
I'm actually thinking of moving out of Holland because of the insane prices for everything.

I'll probably put in for a 10" Alpine Type X sub for my car. I've been wanting one pretty badly for awhile now.

That, or new Nitto INVO tires for the car.

So then your like the states then...You pay income taxed and then pay tax on everything you buy? But you do have national health care right? If so then some of your tax goes to pay for that I would think.

ive never used alpine subs before.

i would say to get a 12 in a ported box. have the box made to the subs specs. my first setup was one 12 inch jbl gto in a ported box with a 200w rockford amp. nobody believed that i had so much bass coming from one sub.

Indeed I mean they even have VAT tax on taxes. yes I'm super serial this country actually has VAT tax on certain taxes. (BPM for new cars for examplem there is a reason new cars here are twice as expense as in Germany or Belgium)

You see we Dutch people not only pay a lot of taxes we also have to pay own "contributions" aswell. Many of the things our neighbours get for free (or with a reduced fee from the state) We have to pay for it aswell. So high taxes but with not much in return.

With the whole environmental thing our governement has found a new method to tax us even more with bull**** eco taxes. Yes bull**** because the income from those taxes just dissapears in the common budget just like all the car related taxes.

We are probally heading to a system that has Scandinavian like taxes but with governement that spends like American one.
