network cards?

ok, since bellatlantic tech support is about as useful as an ice pick between my eyes..

here is what i have tried to fix the problem with my dsl timing out repeatedly..

1) different phone jacks
2) rewiring my own phone jack and replacing it
3) reformatting and reinstalling windows to see if perhaps it was a software problem
4) updating the stupid pppoe software to see if it was a buggy program
5) cracking open the box outside the house (the one that the telephone pole is directly wired to), unplugging the main line's phone jack that connected it to the rest of the house's wiring, and plugging the dsl directly into there for a clean line
6) got a new modem

nothing has worked.

the ONLY thing i haven't tried on my end just yet is replacing the NIC. i'm pretty much broke.. i have about 30 bucks to spend on a new card.

i currently have a dlink dfe-530tx+

what other cards are relatively inexpensive (in the $30 price range) that are worth a try?

Try an basic Intel 10Mbit or an 3com card, 10Mbits soulf be under $30, and those two brands are good. And both are supported good by windows/linux/unix/macos

Drop by your local store or order one online. Try a 3com or Intel. If not that, try a netgear. I wouldn't go with LinkSys - I've had 2 die on me so far and a friend has lost 1 of his 2. netgear MAY have an issue with 98SE from what I recall - I hope not though, it's in my daughter's computer now).

Actually, I have a Linksys Etherfast LNE100TX and I love it! It only cost me $25, it has WOL and everything, and I've yet to have problems, unlike my friend who shelled out more than $50 for his 3Com905Blahblah.

Just look around a local electronics store. They usually have a lot of nice cheap NICs.

hm.. the link light (which shows the link between network card and modem) is ALWAYS solid though. wouldn't it blink or falter if that was the problem? ah well, i'm gonna give it a shot anyways..

You'd be surprised Jen...

here was a problem with my network card.

I had a cable modem w/Asante NIC. I had a LinkSys to my hub. My wife had a LinkSys to the hub.

She's surf or play for a little bit - then my computer would spontaneously reboot.

I could surf/play all day - no problems.

Turns out after enough data passed through my LinkSys (LAN) NIC, it'd take my system down.

Replaced the card - all is well. Later she started having a different problem - replaced the card, all is well.

LinkSys = POS :(

Okay, perhaps I should quantify/qualify my statement.

If you have a LinkSys card, it doesn't mean it will break or stop working. It just means it has a much higher likelyhood of doing so.

This is from my professional experience, as well as knowing enough wholesale vendors who stopped carrying them due to the high return rate.

This is not saying that cards by more reliable manufacturers won't have any problems. They're just less likely to have them - compared to LinkSys.

damn, Voyd is now godlike!! :)

Anyhow, Jenny, I am using Realtek based (10baseT) cards at home.. (can't remember who actually manufactured the card) while they aren't the greatest, they can be had for about ohh.. 10 bucks or so and seem to be working fine with my cable modem :)

If you can afford it though, I would recommend going with Intel or 3com... most definately...

ok another question (as voyd and i were brainstorming last night about my ds-hell)

my comp is overclocked from 500mhz to 600mhz.. so the bus speed is 120 instead of 100. could this cause the network card to act up? i've set it back down to normal speed and i'm waiting to see if it makes a diff.

short version (as something wierd happened and I lost my longer message):

Yes, you may be running your PCI bus at 40Mhz instead of the standard 33Mhz (you're 20% out of spec).

You should have an option to have your PCI bus running at 1/4 speed - which would put you at 30Mhz - 10% under spec.
